Menifield (16-5-1 MMA, 9-5-1 UFC) enters on the heels of a split decision win over Julius Walker in February. The result ended a two-fight skid of stoppage losses against Carlus Ulberg and Azamat Murzakanov. Prior to those setbacks, Menifield was on a solid run with four wins and one draw. He comes into the fight against Sy as a massive underdog, the highest line at the betting window of his UFC tenure. ... Sy (11-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) will aim to keep his professional record unblemished. Although Menifield has significantly more expereince under the UFC banner, Sy has looked great so far. In his debut, he submitted Tuco Tokkos in the opening round, and followed that up with a unanimous decision win over Da Woon Jung.

Despite having more action-packed matchups and appropriate features like local Atlanta fighter Malcolm Wellmaker relegated to the prelims, the main card on ESPN kicks off with light heavyweights Alonzo Menifield and Oumar Sy.
In defense of the UFC matchmakers and their fetish for force-feeding us large men, Menifield and Sy could be an action-filled fight with an empathic ending given the athleticism and finishing potential on both sides.
However, given that both men don't mind grappling (to differing degrees), this could also quickly turn into a three-round artificial insemination reenactment that gets the crowd shouting all sorts of things.
Although a knockout is always on the table with someone like Menifield, I'll officially pick Sy to piss off the live audience by grinding his way to another unanimous decision win.

Markieff Morris: Lakers only need 'minor tweaks' to be contenders
There seem to be two schools of thought when it comes to what the Los Angeles Lakers need to do this summer in order to become legitimate championship contenders next season. Some say the team needs to make big, sweeping changes, which could include trading budding star guard Austin Reaves, whom it has been very reluctant to include in trade discussions over the last year or two. But there are others who argue that the Lakers are simply a couple of moderate but non-major pieces away — a starting-level center and a two-way wing, to be exact. Lakers big man Markieff Morris, who played on their last championship team in 2020 and returned in February's Luka Doncic trade, is in the latter category. While on ESPN's "Get Up," he said that only "minor tweaks" are needed to make the team elite again. 'I think ultimately, Luka does re-sign. Now, is it four years? Is it two years? But, ultimately, I think he will be there. What I think they need to make happen to the roster, I think it's minor tweaks. You're in a position where LeBron [James] has maybe two years left and he's trying to win right now, so I don't think bringing in a ton of new pieces and revamping the team makes a lot of sense. I think where they were this year, we were really close to winning, so it's just minor tweaks. You may get a big in there, but I don't think you move core pieces to get a big and mess the team up. When it reality, you only really need one big for the big fella in Joker (Nikola Jokić), to be able to get to the Finals. So I don't think you want to put too much into that. I think you come back with the same core pieces and you just add maybe a big and you keep growing your team through working them out and trying to figure out what's the next steps.' There is certainly an argument to be made for maintaining some real continuity with this roster. Reaves and James have played together for four seasons, and forward Rui Hachimura has been with them for two and a half seasons. Doncic and forward Dorian Finney-Smith spent four and a half seasons together as members of the Dallas Mavericks. But in sports, as in life, sometimes established bonds and habits, no matter how healthy and beneficial they may be, have to be given up in order to get to the next level. With James now in his 40s and no assurances on whether Doncic will be with them for the long term, the Lakers will need to be bold this offseason and strike while the iron is hot. That could mean giving their roster a facelift or performing major reconstructive surgery.

Derrick Lewis planning Broadway celebration ahead of UFC fight in Nashville
The UFC's knockout king is already planning his trip down Broadway. Derrick Lewis (28-12, 1 NC), who's knocked out a UFC record 15 opponents in his career, returns to the octagon on July 12 at Bridgestone Arena, headlining a heavyweight bout against the unbeaten Tallison Teixeira (8-0) as the UFC returns to Nashville for the first time since 2023. Advertisement "I want to check out the country bars out there, the country music. I'm bringing cowboy boots, hat and stuff like that. I'm prepared for a great celebration after this fight," Lewis told The Tennessean. "I'm planning on everything going great with this fight and there's going to be a good celebration afterwards." Lewis, who's developed a following for his fan-friendly fighting style and colorful post-fight celebrations, ends a 14-month layoff with the bout, while also looking to end Teixeira's streak of eight first-round finishes to start his career. The 6-foot-7 Teixeira made a name for himself on 'Dana White's Contender Series' and after earning a UFC contract, made his debut in February where he quickly secured another first-round knockout against Justin Tafa. But Teixeira has never fought in a main event before and has never been in the octagon with a fighter of Lewis' pedigree. Advertisement "I believe that it's five rounds and all I need is just one punch to get rid of this guy," Lewis said. "I don't care who you are, just one punch by me, I'm going to get rid of you. So that's what we're going to be focusing on, to get rid of this guy in the first round ... Huge news for the MMA world: Jon Jones has officially retired. The former UFC light heavyweight king, and most recently heavyweight champion, has decided to hang up his gloves and put an end to a historic career – arguably the greatest seen in the sport. UFC CEO Dana White broke the news Saturday during the post-fight press conference for UFC on ABC 8 in Baku, Azerbaijan. In response, Tom Aspinall has been promoted from interim to undisputed champion, and is expected to resume title defenses at heavyweight sometime in 2025. There also are new legal troubles for Jones with some serious allegations and pending court summons for leaving the scene of an accident in Albuquerque, N.M., earlier this year.
