Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola would consider managing in South America

The Manchester City boss is revelling in the multi-cultural atmosphere at the Club World Cup and admits the football in countries such as Brazil and Argentina holds huge appeal.
Guardiola has not necessarily got any plans to leave the Etihad Stadium – and has two years remaining on his contract – but did not reject the idea when asked ahead of City's clash with Al Ain in Atlanta.
The Spaniard said: 'Why not? Many, many good things in all history that happen in football – many, many good things – come from South America.
'You know, from Brazil – especially Brazil – Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay. I would say all the countries, many, many good things.
'The greatest players come from there, and after most of them come to Europe because of the opportunities economically and prestige.
'They're incredible. I love, love, love it when you're in this tournament and you play South American teams.
'This culture, the way their fans live every single action is what it is all about. We have to live this competition.'
Guardiola has made clear he is taking the current tournament very seriously.
City side opened their campaign at the expanded global event in the United States with a comfortable 2-0 win over Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca on Wednesday.
They return to action – and can secure a place in the last 16 – when they take on Al Ain of Abu Dhabi in Atlanta on Sunday night (2am Monday BST).
The event has so far received a mixed reception, and there are concerns over how it could impact the start of the 2025-26 season, but Guardiola is determined not to hold anything back.
He said: 'Once we are here, I want to be doing the best. I want to enjoy that moment here.
'We can say it's annoying coming here but the other side is like, well, it's one time every four years that we are here and I want to be back. You have to win big prizes to be here.
'I want to arrive in the last stages – I want to go there. That's the truth, I've said it many times. It is an honour to be here.'
Guardiola has said that he would like to trim his squad for the next Premier League campaign and there has been speculation linking former captain Ilkay Gundogan with Galatasaray.
The 34-year-old rejoined the club last summer after a one-year spell at Barcelona.
Guardiola said: 'No news, good news. I don't know anything, I didn't speak with him. If he will not be part (of the squad), he would not be here.
'At the same time, we have – right now – too many players. Step by step maybe a few players are going to move.
'But, right now, Ilkay is absolutely part of my mind and the team.'

Isak 'taking things into own hands' claim shows what Liverpool and Arsenal need

Alexander Isak has been linked with a move to Liverpool and Arsenal in the summer transfer window, but he has been told he doesn't need to leave Newcastle United to realise his ambitions Liverpool and Arsenal need Alexander Isak to take matters into his own hands if they are to have any chance of signing the Newcastle striker this summer. That's according to former Magpies midfielder Geremi, who also insists the Swede doesn't need to leave St James' Park to take his career to the next level. The Gunners, who are in the market for a top-class number nine this summer, are long-term admirers of Isak. Meanwhile, Liverpool have also emerged as potential suitors as they look for an upgrade on Darwin Nunez, who's available for sale. ‌ However, Newcastle are under no pressure to sell and would only consider letting him leave for a fee in excess of £150million, reports The Telegraph. ‌ There has been no suggestion that Isak – whose Magpies contract has another three years left to run – is really angling for a move. That stance from the player would need to change, says Geremi, for either of last season's top two to land the prolific 25-year-old. 'First of all, they [Newcastle] need to keep their best players at all costs,' said Geremi, speaking to BoyleSports, who offer the latest Club World Cup odds. 'I'm not sure Newcastle would sell Isak for any fee, but it would become an issue if the player took the decision into his own hands.' Having won the Carabao Cup earlier this year and qualified for the Champions League, the former Chelsea midfielder and Cameroon international insists the Magpies are now on the 'same level' as Liverpool and Arsenal. ‌ Geremi added: 'He had a great season and is at one of the biggest teams in the world when it comes to financial backing. 'The environment is all there and I don't think he would gain anything by moving to Liverpool or Arsenal. I think Newcastle are at the same level. Newcastle are now contenders to win the Premier League and the Champions League. 'When they got new owners, I said it would take them three or four years and a trophy to put them in that position and now they are there. They are ready to compete because they have been built under Eddie Howe, they have the right finances and they are an attractive proposition for new players. ‌ 'New signings will have no doubt about joining the club this summer and I wouldn't be surprised if they have an incredible season.' For Arsenal, a deal for either Benjamin Seskso or Viktor Gyokeres looks much more likely at this stage. A new number nine is seen as critical as Arsenal look to go from 'nearly men' to winners following three successive runner-up finishes in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Liverpool have already been busy this summer, signing Bayer Leverkusen pair Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong. The former has now completed his transfer, which could rise to £116m – meaning the Reds have already broken the British record this summer.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's comments about Mo Salah speak volumes about him

It took a while for English football to catch on when it came to Mohamed Salah's star qualities, but Trent Alexander-Arnold knew early on Liverpool were onto something special We are now eight years into Mohamed Salah 's Anfield career, and there isn't a football fan in Europe who isn't aware of his place in the Liverpool pecking order. Although it took time for some to truly appreciate his talent, Trent Alexander-Arnold knew early on the Reds had signed someone different. After a failed spell at Chelsea, Salah went out on loan to Fiorentina and Roma, permanently joining the latter in 2016. One more year would pass before he was back on English shores with Liverpool, and the then-club-record fee of £43million looked like a snip within months. ‌ Despite the struggles he endured at Stamford Bridge, it took no time at all for his Liverpool team-mates to cotton onto what they had signed. Academy graduate Alexander-Arnold, who recently left Anfield to sign for Real Madrid, gave his account of the Egyptian's tireless mindset. ‌ "The first day of pre-season was just a running session," he told Copa90 back in May 2018 when asked what Salah is like off the pitch. "Not a race, just to see how far you can run really. It gets harder each lap you do so you end up doing quite a bit of running and you drop out when you can't go any further. "So everyone has dropped out and it's just me and him left and he didn't stop. Nobody was running against him anymore and it was just that hunger to win and to just carry on. "That's when I saw it. He just wouldn't stop… it just seemed his limit was above everyone else's." Fast forward seven years, and it's fair to say that remains the case among Arne Slot's current squad. Now 33, Salah was instrumental in guiding Liverpool back to the Premier League title in his manager's first season in English football. And he did so while scoring 29 goals in the league to lift his fourth Golden Boot in England's top flight. Not only that, but the 34 goals he scored in all competitions was the second-highest tally of his career, trailing only the 44 he scored during his maiden campaign on Merseyside. ‌ He also added 23 assists in all competitions to bring his tally up to 57 direct goal contributions in 52 appearances. And having played in every single league fixture this term, there appears to be plenty of life in him yet. Fans were elated to see the winger pen a new two-year contract with the club in April, putting to bed any rumours of an exit this summer. Salah was being closely linked with clubs in Saudi Arabia, but the new deal assures he'll be committed to Slot's project until at least 2027. ‌ The same can't be said for Alexander-Arnold after he departed in a controversial free transfer to Madrid. The full-back could potentially make his Real debut on Wednesday when they face Saudi side Al-Hilal, one of the clubs linked with signing Salah, at the FIFA Club World Cup. Liverpool won't be at the competition in the United States, handing Salah a chance to properly rest ahead of their league title defence. And the same compliments that marked the speedster out as a special talent nearly a decade ago seemingly still apply today.

Suspensions not a concern for River Plate's Gallardo after Monterrery draw

LOS ANGELES, June 21 (Reuters) - River Plate coach Marcelo Gallardo is confident he can still field a team capable of defeating Inter Milan in his side's final Group E game at the Club World Cup despite losing several players due to suspension. Gallardo saw Kevin Castano sent off in the latter stages of Saturday's 0-0 draw at the Rose Bowl with Monterrey, while yellow cards for Enzo Perez and Giuliano Galoppo mean the pair will also miss the meeting with the Italians on Wednesday in Seattle. River Plate are one of South America's most successful clubs, winning the Copa Libertadores on four occasions as well as the Intercontinental Cup in 1986. Their draw with Monterrey means the Argentinians are level on four points with Inter Milan in Group E. The two teams are due to face off in their final group game on Wednesday. Monterrey are third in the standings, two points behind Inter and River Plate, and a win over already-eliminated Urawa Red Diamonds from Japan could see the Mexican side climb into the qualification berths for the knockout rounds. River Plate coach Marcelo Gallardo: "We have some players that we're going to be missing. We, of course, had some yellow cards and there are several players who won't be able to play in the next game, so we will have to see how we organise that. "But I see the glass as half full because, if you look at the scores, every club, every team has had it's problems. It was hard for Inter to win, it was hard for Monterrey too, so for our third game we're going to go with the best we have and we're going to be optimistic. "Today we deserved to win. Our level was better, and for the next game we will do the same."
