Local not-seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate drops to 4.6%

Yahoo30-04-2025

The not-seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre/Hazleton Metropolitan Statistical Area dropped four-tenths of a percentage point to 4.6% in March after sitting at 5% in January and February, according to data from the state Department of Labor & Industry.
However, the rate is up three-tenths of a percentage point from March 2024.
'When I tend to look at the unadjusted unemployment rates, you have monthly volatility that could be due to seasonal factors,' said Lauren Riegel, a statistician manager for the state Department of Labor & Industry. 'When I'm looking at the unadjusted data, I like to look at the over-the-year movement.'
The statewide rate was 3.9%, up three-tenths of a percentage point from March 2024, and the national rate was 4.2%, also up three-tenths of a percentage point from last March, according to the department.
'Basically, the Scranton MSA is right on track with the trends we're seeing in the greater region and the nation,' Riegel said.
The number of seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs in the local metro area increased by 600 over the month to a record high 270,400 in March, according to state data.
'This was the third record high in the last four months,' Riegel said. 'Last month's record high matched the record high set in December, and before that a record high had been set in October and September — which broke the April 2019 record. Since then, it seems like every few months it's trending upward and continuing to hit record highs.'
Over the year, the region added 2,900 jobs, an increase of 1.1% while the statewide increase was 1.4%.
Annual revisions to the historical (pre-2025) not-seasonally-adjusted labor force series are now complete and are reflected in the news release; however, due to methodological changes and conversions to the 2020 Census-based Office of Management and Budget (OMB) delineations, seasonally adjusted substate area data will not be available until summer 2025, the department announced.
In March, six of the 10 supersectors saw increased employment in the local metro area with education and health services reaching a record high 56,900 jobs, according to state data. Over the year, education and health services saw the largest employment gain — up 1,800 jobs.
'I think that's a trend we will probably continue to see, especially in a state like ours, because we have an aging population and an increased need for health care services,' Riegel said.

British Business Bank invests $13m in Shawbrook

The British Business Bank has announced a £10m ($13.3m) investment in Shawbrook Bank's £75m Tier 2 note issuance. According to the UK Government's economic development bank, its investment follows a previous £30m subscription to Shawbrook's Tier 2 note issuance in 2020. The lender's Tier 2 capital note investments are designed to support recipient banks in expanding their services, thereby increasing the supply of finance to smaller businesses in the UK. With the capital raised through this issuance, Shawbrook will continue supporting growth in its specialist small business markets. British Business Bank managing director of direct financial institution solutions Richard Bowen said: 'This £10m investment is our third Tier 2 investment in Shawbrook Bank and follows a £150m ENABLE Build transaction in 2024, extending a successful partnership since our first investment in 2015. 'I am delighted to continue our work together to support diversity within the small business finance markets, helping fuel the growth of smaller businesses across the UK.' Shawbrook Bank CFO Dylan Minto added: 'We are pleased to have successfully completed the issuance of £75m Tier 2 capital, strengthening our capital base to support our growth and strategic ambitions. 'We value the continued support from British Business Bank, with their long-term participation serving as a strong endorsement of our strategy and providing the capital foundation to further grow our SME lending, supporting businesses across the UK.' Last month, Shawbrook extended a £20m revolving credit facility to ScotLend, marking its first transaction with a Scottish-based lender. This facility aims to enhance ScotLend's presence in the bridging finance market across the UK. In the full year 2024, Shawbrook's loan book grew by 16% to £15.2bn, driven by strong demand in specialist commercial and retail markets. However, underlying profit before tax decreased to £294m from £302m in 2023. 1 Massive Problem Facing Nio Investors. Is the Stock Still a Buy?

China's EV production capacity utilization is near an alarming 50% level. The price war in China has hit all competitors -- foreign and domestic. Nio's focus will be on accelerating deliveries through Onvo and Firefly. 10 stocks we like better than Nio › It almost seems impossible to think China's automotive market was once the most desirable in the world. At a time when China's automotive market sales were exploding, foreign automakers were quick to enter the market and make a buck while the young and inexperienced Chinese automakers watched and learned. Fast forward to today, and the story has nearly flipped. While auto sales are still lucrative in volume, the country is embattled in a brutal price war that has eroded profits. And for competitors like Nio (NYSE: NIO), a little more bad news is on the way. If you're invested in global automakers, you've likely heard a thing or two about the situation in China. Market leader BYD continued to apply pressure in late May when it announced an aggressive pricing strategy that slashed prices as much as 34% on 22 of its electric and plug-in hybrid models until the end of June. China's price war, which has become so devastating that it's forced government officials to call executives together in an attempt to soften the impacts and avoid a race to the bottom, is likely far from over. The price war might actually be distracting investors from a deeper issue for the automotive industry, and that's overcapacity. According to data from Shanghai-based Gasgoo Automotive Research Institute, China's overall industry capacity utilization was a meager 49.5% -- leaving a massive chunk of the country's 55.5 million annual vehicle production capacity unused. Then came the words that analysts have warned about and investors have feared: The price war may have no end. "As long as you have 50 percent capacity realization, you won't be able to end the price war in a normal market," said Jochen Siebert, managing director at auto consultancy JSC Automotive, according to Automotive News. For Nio and its investors, much of its problem in China is currently out of its control. At some point many automakers in China will be forced out of business or to consolidate, leaving a much healthier industry. Until that time comes, Nio's primary focus will be on cost improvement to offset margin pressure from the price war. The good news is we've seen some tangible progress from Nio on cost cutting. In fact, during the first quarter of 2025, vehicle margin increased to 10.25% from the prior year's 9.2%. Gross profit also made a substantial 88.5% increase to $126.7 million, compared to the prior year. The price war still hurts and Nio's net loss widened during the first quarter, but more optimization is on the way. "Since the first quarter, we have implemented a range of cost control measures, including organizational restructuring, cross-brand integration, and efficiency improvements in R&D, supply chain, sales and services," added Stanley Yu Qu, NIO's chief financial officer, in a press release. "Starting from the second quarter, the Company aims to achieve structural improvements in overall cost efficiency, with continued progress in operational performance." At the end of the day, Nio is doing its best to control what it can and has made considerable improvements on costs. Now the company will have to pivot and also focus on accelerating production of its two newer brands, Onvo and Firefly, which should help drive deliveries as the year progresses. For investors, while Nio is an intriguing investment in the world's largest EV market, it might be wise to watch from the sidelines until China's overcapacity problem isn't so dire and its price war not so brutal.
