England Under-21 into semi-finals of Euros after 3-1 victory over Spain

New York Times17 hours ago

England have qualified for the semi-finals of the Under-21 European Championships after a 3-1 victory over Spain.
In a repeat of the 2023 final, early goals from Manchester City's James McAtee and Liverpool's Harvey Elliott put England 2-0 up, before Valencia's Javi Guerra made the score 2-1 at half-time from the penalty spot.
Despite a tense second-half, a late penalty from Nottingham Forest's Elliott Anderson ensured the victory and the pathway to the semi-finals for the reigning champions. They will face the Netherlands on Wednesday.
What a win. What a performance.

Elliott told Channel 4 after the game: 'It's incredible. I am lost for words. We knew it was going to be very tough. The were going to play an incredible game against us.
'But the way the lads handled the pressure, even after conceding the goal, we deserved it so much. It's time to celebrate, but we need to start thinking of the semi-finals tonight.'

Both sets of players clashed after the full-time whistle, with defender Rafa Marin being shown a red card, while McAtee was booked.
'It was always going to happen because of the passion from both teams,' Elliott said about the incident. It is one of those where I was trying to calm everyone down. At the end of the day, we have got everything to lose. They don't. We can't lose players for the semi-final.'
Earlier on Saturday Netherlands' 1-0 victory over Portugal confirmed their qualification for the semis. Denmark face France and Germany play Italy in the remaining two other quarter-finals on Sunday.
Analysis by Art de Roche
This was England's most complete performance of the tournament.
Considering their group-stage performances and Spain's history in the tournament, as joint-record winners and having reached the last five semi-finals, it would have been fair to call England underdogs pre-match.
Lee Carsley's side had teething issues with their 4-2-2-2 shape in the groups, but Jay Stansfield starting up front helped them find better balance against Spain.
The early penalty scare did not feel definite enough to stand, and they did well to capitalise on the corner to score and gain momentum.
That momentum bred a collective confidence that allowed Jarrell Quansah to show the individual quality that earned him a spot in the squad.
Ahead of England's second group game, the Liverpool centre-back spoke about taking inspiration from Joel Matip in the way he carried the ball forward from defence.
Coincidentally, it was one of these runs forward that led to his Liverpool team-mate Harvey Elliott putting England 2-0 up.
Another such run led to big England chance in the second half too, with Omari Hutchinson continuing to impress.

While Quansah gave away a penalty to make it 2-1, England defended Spain's second half onslaught incredibly well both collectively and individually.
Jonathan Rowe's off-ball running was exceptional late in the game and he got his reward to earn the penalty to ensure it was England who would meet the Netherlands in Wednesday's semi-finals.

Ralf Rangnick talks Flick, Yamal, Laporta, La Masia – ‘Never seen Barcelona play like this'

In a recent interview with Diario SPORT, Ralf Rangnick has offered his thoughts on multiple topics in the world of football, including FC Barcelona. Rangnick, the current manager of the Austrian national team, has opened up about his connection to the club, his admiration for its founding principles, and his vision for its future under a new German coach. On his connection to Laporta During the interview, it was established that Laporta has a deep respect for Rangnick and footballing philosophy. The German, in fact, had a key role to play in recommending Hansi Flick. Advertisement Laporta even asked what it would take to implement it at a club like Barcelona. ''That sounds very interesting. And what kind of coaches would you need for that?' he asked me. And I said, well, we need modern coaches who like to work with young players,' he revealed. 'If you play almost only with young players, as Barcelona do, you have to trust them, I told Laporta. You have to let them run and play like little young wolves. If you just tell them, don't do that and don't risk too much, it won't work. 'If you want to play with young players, you have to take some risks, let them play,' he added. The relationship with the club's board didn't end there, as Rangnick confirms he remains in contact with the vice president. Advertisement 'Yes. Yuste is still in touch with me, sending me WhatsApp every two months,' he revealed. On influence of Johan Cruyff and Barça's identity Rangnick revealed that the Dutch legend was not only an influence but a childhood idol who shaped his own career. 'I wanted to be like him. I played for one of the clubs in my city. I was the captain of the team. And at that time, players were playing with the numbers 1 through 11. I asked my coach at the time if I could play with the number 14. And I succeeded,' he said. 'So I was the only player on my team who was allowed to play at 14. Johan was, for me, the first modern number ten,' he added. Advertisement He believes Cruyff's greatest legacy at Barcelona was creating a lasting footballing identity that guides the club through every coaching change. 'It was clear that after his playing career, he would likely come to play a vital role at a club, whether as a coach or as a sporting director. His influence on clubs like Ajax and Barcelona was enormous. 'Johan Cruyff's greatest achievement after his playing career was that, in both clubs, this corporate identity endures. Something that other clubs don't have,' he said. Ralf Rangnick has always been a huge fan of Johan Cruyff. (Photo by) Advertisement 'Every time Barça change coaches, the new one has to be able to follow the same approach. And always, during the last 15, 25, 30 years, they sign similar players, develop young players from their academy, and never bring in the wrong coach. 'That was one of Cruyff's greatest achievements, because he established that with each change of coach, it makes no sense to change the approach to football and the style of football. Unfortunately, there are not many Cruyffs currently in the clubs,' he added. On Hansi Flick and the new high-pressing Barça Rangnick went on to talk about Hansi Flick and the new identity he has brought to the table at Barça. Advertisement Rangnick sees his core philosophies on pressing and verticality already being implemented by Flick and praised the dramatic shift in style. 'The biggest achievement is the style that changed the team's focus: High line defence, high pressure. I've never seen Barcelona play like this, completely different,' he said. 'Hansi trusts and believes in those young high-level players with whom he is playing, with an average age, I don't know, 23 years old. And yes. And, as I said, Flick trusts and believes in them. Rangnick has heaped praise on Hansi Flick. (Photo by) 'He's like a father figure to a lot of them, and yes, I think he makes quite a few decisions that are relevant for a modern coach. Very much like Jurgen Klopp or me,' he added. On La Masia While admitting he hasn't studied its inner workings, Rangnick acknowledged the undeniable success of Barcelona's famed academy. Advertisement 'To be honest, no. What I know is that they sign players at a very young age and develop them in the style that Barcelona wants to play, technical football. 'In detail, I don't know what they're doing there, but they obviously do a lot of things right, right? 'The benefits are there, with 8 or 9 players from the academy in the first team. And the Spanish team that played against Portugal had nine U20 players do something similar,' he said. He sees the youthful core of the current squad as a key to future dominance, if they can be kept together. 'What would happen to Barcelona or Paris Saint-Germain in the next 2 or 3 years if they can keep their squad together? If so, I don't see any team that can beat them in the next few years,' he said. On Lamine Yamal Finally, Rangnick, a man renowned for discovering world-class talent, reserved his highest praise for Barcelona's teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal. Advertisement 'Every century, you have a player like that. 'At only 17 years old, with this maturity… If you see him play, it's like he's coming from a different planet. Unbelievable, an incredible player,' he concluded.

Barcelona eyeing Bosman move for Liverpool, Bayern Munich target in 2026

Barcelona have added significant strength to their defensive unit by bringing in Joan Garcia from Espanyol. However, the club are actively working on further reinforcing their ranks in defence, with the board ideally working on players who can come for free. Advertisement That is perhaps why Barcelona have already started thinking about their options in 2026, when many players are expected to become free agents. Barcelona eye move for Marc Guehi According to Fichajes, one of the free agents Barcelona are targeting in 2026 is none other than Marc Guehi. The Crystal Palace centre-back has become a regular for the English national team and is on Barça's radar as a long-term strategic option. Barcelona want to sign Marc Guehi for free in 2026 (Photo by) His contract situation is key; should he not renew with the Premier League club, he would be available on a free transfer in the summer of 2026, effectively making him an ideal signing for the Blaugrana. Advertisement At 24, Guehi fits the profile of a young defender with international experience and significant room for growth. From a sporting perspective, Guehi would be an ideal defensive partner for someone like Pau Cubarsi. He may even emerge as a perfect long-term replacement for Inigo Martinez. Guehi's solidity, tactical intelligence, and comfort in playing the ball out from the back have attracted attention from several of Europe's top clubs, including Liverpool, Newcastle, and Bayern Munich. Crystal Palace's high valuation for a direct Premier League rival this summer makes an immediate transfer difficult. This provides an opening for a club like Barcelona to play the long game, monitoring his situation closely with the intention of securing him on a Bosman deal.

Victor Osimhen now BEGGING out to be signed by Liverpool

Victor Osimhen now BEGGING out to be signed by Liverpool Liverpool have been informed that they are in the driving seat should they pursue a deal for Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian forward is coming off the back of a successful season on loan at Galatasaray - scoring 37 times in 41 games overall as Gala won the Turkish league and cup double. Advertisement But the 26-year-old has now returned to parent club Napoli, where his contract extends until 2026. With relations at an all-time low, Osimhen WILL be sold this summer and Liverpool are favourites to sign him according to a report in Sportmediaset. According to the report, Osimhen rejected Al-Hilal's contract offer of €35m per season. Gala too would like to have him back, proposing €15m per year of their own money and another €10m from sponsors. The Turkish giants won't hang around forever however and need an answer soon. Liverpool are Napoli's preference Osimhen for his part is open to a future in the Premier League - but the player's preference is believed to be a move to Juventus. Advertisement The complicating factor for the Bianconeri is that Aurelio De Laurentiis - the Napoli president - has zero intention of selling his prized asset to a domestic rival. A reported release clause of €75m ONLY applies to overseas clubs, meaning Juve can be quite easily priced out of a deal for Osimhen. Napoli are keen to prevent their 2022/23 Serie A title-winning forward from becoming a burden and are seeking a quick resolution before a training camp at Trentino begins in around a month.
