Last 10 years have seen poor youths getting selected for top Civil Services jobs: Jitendra Singh

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said that the last 11 years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi have seen a democratisation of India's Civil Services with youths from poor families and remote areas getting selected for the country's top jobs and realising their aspirations. In an interview to Doordarshan News, the minister said that while at one time, the IAS and Civil Services were confined only to a handful of States like Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Kerala etc, today, we get toppers from the States which earlier hardly figured in the civil services list toppers from Punjab, Haryana and J&K. He cited the case of Parsanjit Kour, the young girl from Poonch, a border district in J&K, who made it to All India Rank 11 in the Civil Services Exam of 2022 in very first attempt or the boy from Punjab, Anmol Sher Singh Bedi who got All India Rank 2 in the Civil Services Exam of 2016. This, the Minister said, has restored faith in the objectivity and equal opportunity offered by the system and, thus, also led to democratisation of youth aspiration. 'This is the true essence of democracy -- where every mother, regardless of her socio-economic standing, has the confidence to believe that her child can reach the top," said Dr Jitendra Singh. The Minister said that the 11 years have been nothing short of transformational for India. 'What generations longed for over decades has been made possible in just over a decade,' he stated, adding that PM Modi has wiped the tears of the past and replaced them with eyes full of hope and future aspirations. Each passing year, the Minister said, has marked a new milestone -- be it in infrastructure, governance, technology, or youth empowerment -- creating unprecedented opportunities for every Indian. Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Public Grievances and Pensions, Dr Jitendra Singh, stated that under PM Modi's leadership, citizens' self-esteem has been restored. Referring to the PM's historic 2016 call of "Start-Up India, Stand-Up India", he emphasised how it broadened the employment horizon beyond traditional government jobs. 'It was only then people realised that job doesn't only mean "Sarkari Naukri", but also innovation, enterprise, and startups,' the Minister noted. India's biotech sector, he highlighted, is a perfect example -- growing from just 50 start-ups in 2014 to over 10,075 in 2024, with a leap in valuation from $10 billion to nearly $170 billion. He credited this to strong public-private partnerships and forward-thinking policies like Bio-E3 and the National Quantum Mission.

IAS officer, her husband, and personal security officer booked for attempt to murder in Jalandhar

An FIR has been registered in the case where a plot owner was shot by the personal security officer (PSO) of IAS officer Babita Kaler on Saturday morning in a posh locality near PIMS Hospital in Jalandhar. The FIR was lodged late Saturday night at Police Station Division No. 7. The FIR names senior IAS officer Babita Kaler, her husband and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Stephen Kaler, and Sukhkaran Singh, the PSO provided by the Punjab Government. The case has been registered under Sections 109 (attempt to murder), 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 61 (2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant sections of the Arms Act. The victim, Harpreet Singh, suffered a bullet injury in his leg. The police have arrested Sukhkaran Singh and taken possession of the weapon used in the incident. A recommendation has also been sent to the police department to suspend Sukhkaran Singh. The police will soon present him in court to seek remand for interrogation. Sources said the police were preparing to issue notices to Babita and Stephen Kaler, asking them to join the investigation. Harinder Singh Gill, Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police, stated they will determine why the shooting occurred — whether it was necessary or done under pressure – during the interrogation. IAS officer Babita Kaler and her husband Stephen Kaler, who live in the upscale Baradari area, reportedly had a dispute with the owners of the adjacent plot over the dumping of soil. During an altercation, Babita Kaler's PSO Sukhkaran Singh shot the brother of the plot owner. The bullet was fired using a government-issued firearm. AAP leader Stephen Kaler stated that the people who came to dump soil were asked to speak to the plot owner. He said he facilitated the conversation and then went inside the house. However, during this time, the individuals who had come to dump the soil allegedly began arguing with the PSO and used abusive language. They also reportedly tried to assault him, after which the PSO fired in self-defence.

'Cleaner Bengaluru, Smarter Bengaluru. The all-new, state-of-the-art #CityCat vehicle is ready to roll out on Bengaluru's streets,' Shivakumar posted. 'This is more than a machine, it's a symbol of our commitment to a cleaner, greener future. We're transforming our city, one bold step at a time, and we won't stop until Bengaluru shines,' he added. The new CityCat machine is part of an upgraded fleet of cleaning vehicles aimed at supporting BBMP's solid waste management and street sanitation efforts. It features advanced vacuuming, sweeping, and dust suppression systems, offering more efficient and faster cleaning of major roads and public spaces. Officials believe this will significantly reduce dust and litter, particularly in high-traffic areas. Speaking to reporters after a review, he said the state government has taken key steps to address hurdles, including land acquisition and forest clearance for construction works at Bairagonda and Lakkenahalli, where a balanced reservoir is being planned. 'We have already discussed the project issues with the Forest Department. Land acquisition and financial aspects for reservoir works have been reviewed. Based on suggestions from ministers, we are incorporating necessary changes,' Shivakumar said. He also inspected the project sites personally and said the concerns raised by the departments would be studied in detail and taken up in the upcoming cabinet meeting. 'Even if other projects are delayed, I am determined to complete the Yettinahole project. The Chief Minister has given clear directions to treat it as a priority,' Shivakumar added. The project, seen as vital for water-scarce regions like Kolar and Chikkaballapur, has been a long-pending demand from local communities.
