KSU urges collector to act on rising violence at Maharaja's College men's hostel
Kochi: KSU has written to district collector NSK Umesh, seeking urgent intervention into alleged rising incidents of violence and ragging at Maharaja's College men's hostel. KSU has requested collector to check drug abuse within the hostel and its premises.
According to KSU, violence became routine in the hostel, with past complaints, FIRs and student protests failing to prompt action. "The culture of impunity that took root in the hostel poses a grave threat not only to the safety of individual students but to the integrity of the institution itself. We are concerned that if left unaddressed, this environment will continue to breed lawlessness, fear and irreparable harm to young lives," said a letter written by KSU Ernakulam assembly president Muhammad Ajmal K K.
In the letter, the student outfit cited Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1998, highlighting that many of the acts within the hostel constitute clear cases of ragging, including physical assault, intimidation and psychological abuse.
KSU has demanded a time-bound inquiry, installation of CCTV cameras, regular police inspections and strict implementation of anti-ragging guidelines. "We seek justice for victims and a safe, dignified space for all students," stated the letter.

Plus One seat shortage: KSU activists picket DDE's office in Kozhikode
Activists of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) on Wednesday picketed the office of the Deputy Director of Education (DDE), Kozhikode, seeking more Plus One batches for north Kerala districts. The activists alleged that even after the completion of three rounds of allotment for admissions, 35% of applicants had not been allotted merit seats in these districts. When V.T. Sooraj, KSU Kozhikode district president, and others reached the office at around 10 a.m., the police blocked them outside the gate. The activists then staged a sit-in protest there. The police subsequently tried to take them into custody. However, some of the activists broke off the police cordon and barged into the DDE office. Later, the police detained all of them.

Drones, laser beams, gliders banned near Kochi airport
Kochi: District collector NSK Umesh issued an order prohibiting use of microlight aircraft, aero models, paragliders, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), drones, powered hand gliders, laser beams and hot air balloons within five-kilometre radius (red zone) of Kochi airport. It was found that operating these objects near runway and landing paths poses a serious risk to aircraft safety. Collector issued the order under Section 163 of Indian Civil Aviation Code-2023 to ensure safe landing, take-off and flight operations. No one is permitted to use these devices in the red zone. If such activities are noticed, it should be immediately reported to the nearest police station.
