Bayer Leverkusen reach agreement with Brentford to sign Mark Flekken

Yahoo01-06-2025

Bayer Leverkusen have reached an agreement with Brentford to sign Mark Flekken, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.
Flekken joined Brentford in the summer of 2023 after David Raya's departure to Arsenal, and has since established himself as one of the Premier League's best goalkeepers.

No keeper in the top tier of English football made more saves than Flekken's 153 last time out – 28 more than Aaron Ramsdale in second – as he helped Brentford secure a 10th-place finish.
The 31-year-old is now set for a move to Leverkusen after they agreed a €10 million deal to take him to the BayArena.
Personal terms between Flekken and Leverkusen have been finalised, and the transfer is expected to be made official in the coming days, pending a medical.
Flekken will relish the opportunity to play Champions League football for the first time in his career under compatriot Erik ten Hag, who has replaced Xabi Alonso.

The Dutchman made a name for himself in the Bundesliga during his time with SC Freiburg, and his impending return to Germany is a full-circle moment in his career.
Brentford will be expected to move fast in their search for a replacement, and are keen on a move for Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher.
Flekken may not be the only key player to depart the Gtech Community Stadium this summer.
Last season's leading scorer Bryan Mbeumo is attracting interest from several clubs, including Manchester United and Newcastle United.
Manager Thomas Frank wanted Tottenham Hotspur, although any approach is dependent on the future of current boss Ange Postecoglou.

European leaders worry they're too reliant on U.S. tech

European governments may be reconsidering their use of American technology and services, according to a new report in The New York Times. The flashpoint seems to come after President Donald Trump sanctioned Karim Khan, the chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court, over the ICC's decision to issue arrest warrants for Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant. In response, Microsoft turned off Khan's email address. Casper Klynge, a former diplomat who has also worked for Microsoft, told the NYT that Microsoft's action became 'the smoking gun that many Europeans had been looking for,' pushing them to look at alternative options. (Some ICC workers have reportedly switched over to Swiss email service Proton, for example.) 'If the U.S. administration goes after certain organizations, countries or individuals, the fear is American companies are obligated to comply,' Klynge said. For its part, Microsoft said it has subsequently made policy changes to protect customers similar situations, and it noted that it did not shut down the email accounts of four ICC judges who Trump sanctioned earlier this month. In addition, just this week, CEO Satya Nadella announced new 'sovereign solutions' to protect European institutions.

Once part of a formidable partnership with Harry Kane, there is no question the South Korea international's powers appeared to have waned last season. Advertisement Thankfully, after an almost 10-year association with Tottenham, Son finally marked his time at the club with a trophy last season, lifting the Europa League under departed boss Ange Postecoglou. Son weighs up transfer away from Tottenham Despite a difficult season, Son has an opportunity to wave goodbye on a positive note | Credit: Getty Images Son has scored over 100 goals for Tottenham, and is ranked at no.35 in FourFourTwo's list of the greatest Premier League players of all time – the highest placing of any Asian player in the list. Now 32 and somewhat struggling with the intensity of the Premier League, however, it appears Son is weighing up where to begin the twilight of his career. Former Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has his eye on Son | Credit: Getty Images According to journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, Son has met with current Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho. Advertisement They know each other from when the Special One was in the dugout with Spurs from November 2019 until April 2021, when Son was in the midst of some of his best years. Relations between the two are thought to be 'at a very advanced level' with the player open to the move and a transfer fee of £30m mooted. Son – the third-most expensive Asian player of all time – would be Spurs' second permanent sale of the summer window, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg set to make his Marseille loan permanent when his current contract expires at the end of June. Son and Mourinho struck up a strong bond when the Portuguese manager was in north London In FourFourTwo's opinion, now seems the perfect time for Son to wave goodbye. Ending on the high of a Europa League trophy, that long-awaited piece of silverware at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, will cement the forward's place as a legend of the club. Advertisement FourFourTwo understands that the Lilywhites are open to a sale, too, having triggered an option to extend the no.7's contract in January, so that they wouldn't lose him for free this summer. Son is valued at €20m, according to Transfermarkt.

Barcelona star pokes fun at Bayern Munich through Nico Williams social media post

The latest social media activity on the part of Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has turned heads on Saturday. This comes after the Dutchman aimed something of a dig at German heavyweights Bayern Munich, over their ongoing pursuit of Nico Williams. Advertisement It is of course common knowledge at this point that both Bayern and Barca are actively seeking a deal for wide-man Nico this summer. It is the latter, though, who are now considered clear favourites to land the 22-year-old, who favours a Camp Nou switch over any other destination. A post, in turn, surfaced on Instagram this weekend, intended as something of a jibe in the direction of Bayern. As much featured a quote from 2022, surrounding Robert Lewandowski's Barcelona move, accompanied by an updated caption regarding Nico. And as alluded to above, quick to showcase his appreciation for the post was a current member of Hansi Flick's midfield ranks, in Frenkie de Jong: Conor Laird – GSFN
