Mbappe discharged from hospital — Will the Real Madrid star play in FIFA Club World Cup 2025?
Kylian Mbappe was discharged from the hospital on Thursday after an acute case of gastroenteritis. It remains unclear when he will return to action for Real Madrid at the Club World Cup.
Mbappe missed Madrid's opening match of the tournament — a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal in Miami — due to a fever. Manager Xabi Alonso said the France international was in 'rough shape' and had been unable to train for days.
His illness has cast doubt on what role he can play in the month-long tournament in the United States. Madrid next faces Pachuca in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday.
'Mbappe will continue with specific medical treatment and will gradually return to the team's activity,' Madrid said in a statement.
Mbappe's stats at Real Madrid
Matches: 56
Goals: 43
Assists: 5
Trophies: 2 - UEFA Super Cup (2024-25), FIFA Intercontinental Cup (2024-25)
Gastroenteritis, also known as stomach flu, can cause symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea.
Mbappe's absence is a blow to the Club World Cup, which FIFA president Gianni Infantino hopes will become one of football's elite events, rivaling competitions like the Champions League and Premier League in popularity and value.
The 26-year-old was Madrid's top scorer last season, netting 43 goals in 56 appearances in his debut year after joining from Paris Saint-Germain.
His hospitalisation comes almost exactly one year after he sustained a broken nose at the European Championship and had to wear a face mask to continue playing.

‘We're not friends': Lionel Messi on how relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo is based on mutual respect
Argentine superstar Lionel Messi said that while he had a tremendous amount of respect for eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo, the two superstars were not exactly friends. Messi said that this was not due to some kind of personal animosity but was down to the simple fact that the two superstars don't spend time together with their paths rarely crossing. 'I have a lot of respect and admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and for the career he's had and continues to have, because he's still competing at the highest level,' Messi told DSports. 'The competition with him was on the pitch. Each of us wanted to do the best for our team. Obviously, as always, everything stayed on the field. Off the pitch, we are two normal people. We're not friends obviously because we don't spend time together, but we've always treated each other with a lot of respect,' he added. A few weeks ago, Ronaldo had also said that he had nothing but respect for Messi. 'I have affection for Messi, although we have been rivals for many years. As I have said in several interviews, we were on stage for 15 years. I translated for him at the galas. I have affection for him because he always respected me a lot,' Ronaldo had said ahead of Portugal's game against Spain in the Nations League final. On Friday, Messi's stunning free kick secured Inter Miami a 2-1 win over Porto in their Club World Cup Group A clash, marking the first time a CONCACAF team has defeated a European side in an official FIFA tournament. The Argentine great was pivotal as the Major League Soccer side bounced back from their disappointing goalless draw against Egyptian side Al Ahly in their opening match. Inter Miami's win over Porto boosts their chances of a deep run in a tournament designed to pit champion clubs from across the globe against one another. The competition is taking place in 12 stadiums across the United States.

'No friendship' between Messi and Ronaldo, Argentine star clarifies
There is no animosity or personal conflict between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, their limited interaction is simply a result of their careers taking them in different directions. Even during their time in Spain, when they were regularly facing off in La Liga, they represented bitter rivals: Messi with Barcelona and Ronaldo with Real Madrid, at the heart of the intense El Clasico rivalry. Now, Ronaldo plays in Saudi Arabia for Al-Nassr, while Messi stars for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. Many fans around the world still dream of seeing the two icons share the pitch as teammates before they retire, but such a collaboration remains a distant hope. 'Ronaldo and I aren't friends' Between them, Messi and Ronaldo have collected 13 Ballon d'Or awards and rewritten the history books on numerous occasions. At 40, Ronaldo continues to chase milestones, including the remarkable target of 1,000 career goals. Meanwhile, Messi, who led Argentina to World Cup glory, is preparing to celebrate his 38th birthday on Tuesday. Both of the football superstars could meet one final time if they clash in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 if they manage to get their names on the squad list for the quadrennial tournament that is.

PSG stunned by Botafogo in Club World Cup upset
PASADENA: Paris Saint-Germain suffered a shock 1-0 Club World Cup defeat against Brazilian side Botafogo on Thursday in a hardfought battle between the reigning champions of Europe and South America. A first-half goal from Brazilian international Igor Jesus proved the difference as Botafogo all but sealed a place in the knockout rounds in front of a 53,699 crowd at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. French champions PSG are widely regarded as one of the favourites for FIFA's 32-team tournament after a dazzling season which culminated with a scintillating 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the Champions League final last month. But their hopes of securing a victory which would have seen them become the first side to reach the last 16 were stymied by a resilient performance from their opponents from Rio de Janeiro. "A lot of people wondered, but we showed how strong Botafogo is," goalscorer Jesus said after the win. "It was a difficult game, and we had to defend well, and we did our job and scored a goal. "We're really happy -- we knew how important this game was. One team was the champion of the Champions League, the other team was the champion of South America," added Jesus, who had been strongly linked with a move to English Premier League side Nottingham Forest earlier this year before opting to stay with the Brazilians to play in the Club World Cup. "I think I made the right choice to stay in Botafogo," Jesus quipped.
