United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) Executive Director to visit Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan

Jorge Moreira da Silva, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNOPS Executive Director, is scheduled to visit the Africa region, in a five-day visit that will take him to Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan.
During his visit, Mr. Moreira da Silva will meet national authorities and development partners. He will discuss the practical solutions that UNOPS offer to partners to maximize the impact of their humanitarian, development and peace operations ―all in support of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The visit also aims at getting a better understanding of the needs on the ground, and how UNOPS can scale operations to respond.
UNOPS ongoing support in the region includes:
In Sudan, where half of the population ―some 25 million people― need humanitarian assistance and protection, UNOPS is strengthening health infrastructure, improving access to clean, safe water, supporting peacekeeping operations to protect civilians, and facilitating a more sustainable and equitable use of natural resources.
In Somalia, UNOPS works to strengthen the capacity of Somali institutions and supports partners in a range of sectors, such as health, governance, peace and security. We work to support reconstruction and state-building through disaster preparedness planning, crisis recovery, climate-resilient infrastructure and strengthening of the security sector.
In Ethiopia, UNOPS works with partners to support national and international development priorities. Over the years, with our partners, we have helped strengthen health and education systems and supported food security. This includes environmentally friendly solutions and innovative models to modernize Ethiopia's agriculture sector, provide clean energy to off-grid areas and improve health services across the country.

As the Israel-Iran conflict enters its ninth day, India has lent a helping hand to help evacuate Nepali and Sri Lankan citizens from Iran. In a humanitarian gesture, India has extended its ongoing evacuation efforts in Iran to include citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka. This move comes following formal requests from the governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka, according to a statement released by the Indian Embassy in Tehran. Indian officials have confirmed that arrangements are being made to assist Nepali and Sri Lankan nationals stranded in Iran amid the ongoing conflict in the region. UAE eases visa renewal rules for Sudanese expats amid conflict

In a humanitarian gesture reflecting the UAE's support for nations in distress, the country has announced that Sudanese nationals in violation of residency laws will be allowed to apply for new visas, renew their residency permits, and obtain Emirates IDs—even if their passports are valid for less than six months. The war in Sudan erupted in April 2023 amid a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) ahead of a planned transition to civilian rule. The United Nations says that nearly two-thirds of Sudan's population, more than 30 million people, will need aid this year. The UAE more than once reiterated its firm stance in favour of Sudan's people and their right to civilian governance, stressing that it does not support or contribute to the killing or displacement of civilians. The move to ease visa renewal rules for Sudanese expats in the UAE was not the first. Earlier this year, the country also announced that Sudanese in the UAE will be exempt from all fines related to residence and entry permits, starting May 19, 2025. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) said that the exceptional measure aims to facilitate the process of regularising the status of Sudanese nationals in the country in light of the ongoing war. Sudanese nationals can renew their residency permits and obtain identity cards using passports with a validity of less than six months, the ICP told Khaleej Times on Saturday. The decision, which came into effect on May 19, will remain valid until the end of this year. Those facing accumulated fines can now regularise their status and submit applications for new or renewed documents via the ICP's official digital platforms, even if their passport validity is less than six months. The authority also stated that procedures would be streamlined and flexible, and that fines would be waived. The move is made in coordination with the UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre). Over the past two years, the UAE has made sincere efforts to promote peace in the country. In contrast, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have repeatedly obstructed these initiatives and have now severed diplomatic ties with the UAE — despite the International Court of Justice recently dismissing their "fabricated accusations," according WAM.

UAE evacuates critically injured child from Gaza for hospital treatment

A three-year-old boy seriously injured in an air strike on Gaza is on the road to recovery after receiving urgent treatment in the UAE. Hatim Awad suffered major injuries, including second and third-degree burns to his body, in an Israeli attack on the enclave. The strike killed his entire family. Hatim was evacuated under the UAE's Operation Chivalrous Knight 3 initiative, a humanitarian mission launched last year under the directive of President Sheikh Mohamed. The child arrived at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi on June 12 to begin comprehensive treatment, Dr Abdulqader Almessabi, chief medical officer at the hospital, said in a report by state news agency Wam. Dr Almessabi added that Hatim's condition has since improved significantly. His evacuation was co-ordinated with other authorities to ensure his safety throughout the journey to the hospital.
