Wasteful India Lose 2-3 To Netherlands In Second Straight FIH Pro League Defeat
Last Updated:
India's men's hockey team lost 3-2 to the Netherlands in their second consecutive FIH Pro League defeat.
The Indian men's hockey team lost 3-2 to Olympic champions the Netherlands in their second consecutive FIH Pro League defeat on Monday. Abishek, earning his 100th cap, scored for India in the 20th minute, while Jugraj Singh converted a penalty corner in the 54th. The Netherlands' goals came from Thijs van Dam (24th minute), Tjep Hoedemakers (33rd minute), and Jip Janssen (57th minute).
India, having already lost 2-1 to the Netherlands on Saturday, began the match strongly with nine circle penetrations in the first quarter, but couldn't convert their pressure into goals. An early chance fell to Abhishek in the sixth minute, but his shot went wide. Shilanand Lakra then intercepted the ball in midfield and drove into the Dutch circle, only to shoot wide. The Netherlands' Tjep Hoedemakers had two opportunities, a reverse hit from a tight angle and a deflection, both of which missed the target. India earned their first penalty corner in the 18th minute, but the Dutch defence thwarted Harmanpreet Singh. Two minutes later, India took the lead through Abhishek's powerful strike into the top of the net from Lakra's assist.
India's lead was short-lived. Four minutes later, Thijs van Dam levelled the score, capitalising on a loose ball from Thierry Brinkman's pass that deflected off an Indian stick.
The Dutch started the second half strongly, taking the lead three minutes into the third quarter. Derck de Vilder's pass found Hoedemakers, who neatly deflected the ball into the goal. The Netherlands then earned their first penalty corner, which went wide. India responded by dominating possession and earning six quick penalty corners, but Harmanpreet Singh and Jugraj Singh failed to convert. India's profligacy was evident in their inability to convert more than one of their nine penalty corners.
Towards the end of the third quarter, India earned a further five penalty corners in quick succession, but Harmanpreet and Jugraj were unable to break through the Dutch defence. In the 54th minute, two more penalty corners were awarded to India, the second of which was converted by Jugraj Singh to equalise. However, with three minutes remaining, Janssen converted the Netherlands' second penalty corner to secure the victory.
India's next match is against Argentina on Wednesday.

KL Rahul smashes first Test ton in almost 18 months, Shubman Gill cannot help but applaud: ‘High class stuff'
KL Rahul might have been kicking himself in the first innings of the Headingley Test against England after he failed a rash shot. After doing all the hard work, the right-hander threw his wicket away as he chased a wide delivery off the bowling of Brydon Carse. As a result, he walked back to the dressing room for 42. However, KL Rahul was a man possessed in the second innings as he helped India solidify their position in the first Test of the five-match series. India vs England, 1st Test: KL Rahul smashes his ninth hundred as the visitors solidify their position in Headingley. (AP) Rahul, 33, brought up his ninth Test century on Day 4 of the ongoing first match. He brought up the milestone off the bowling of Shoaib Bashir in the 62nd over of the game. The right-hander took 202 balls to bring up the three-figure mark. This is KL Rahul's first Test ton in almost 18 months. He had last scored a century against South Africa in the Centurion Test in December 2023. Out of his nine Test hundreds, eight have been as an opener for Rahul. The senior batter has arguably had the best technique among all batters in the Headingley Test, and finally, he has been rewarded for his hard work and determination. Upon reaching the milestone, Rahul took his helmet off and soaked in the applause of the Headingley crowd. The India captain, Shubman Gill, also had a bright smile on his face as he applauded the feat of KL Rahul. 'High-class stuff from a high-class player. What an absolute joy to watch,' said Nasseer Hussain on commentary. 'Just a beautiful cover drive, that's how he got to a wonderful hundred,' said Michael Atherton. This is KL Rahul's third hundred in England. He is the only Indian opening batter to have three centuries in the UK. He now averages close to 40 in the country. On Day 3, Rahul helped India not lose wickets in a cluster. After the loss of Yashasvi Jaiswal (4), Rahul retrieved India's innings along with Sai Sudharsan (30). Rahul kept moving the scoreboard along, and England bowlers were unable to create pressure and curb the run flow. Also Read: IND vs ENG Live Score: Rishabh Pant on the charge after half-century On Day 4, Brydon Carse struck in the very first over as he dismissed India captain Shubman Gill. Rishabh Pant then joined Rahul in the middle and the duo had to toil hard as England bowlers did not give away any easy freebies. However, after grinding it out in the first hour, Rahul unleashed his wide array of shots. He was helped by Harry Brook as the England batter dropped a sitter in the slips. Pant and Rahul then eventually saw out the first session. In the second session, Rahul and Pant tried to score aggressively. The England attack had no answers, and eventually, Rahul reached the three-figure mark in the 62nd over of the second innings. India in the driver's seat in the Headingley Test The Shubman Gill-led India are completely in the driver's seat owing to Rahul and Pant's heroics in the second innings of the Headingley Test. India's lead has gone past the 200-run mark. The Headingley pitch has also not deteriorated, and India would look to give England a target of more than 400 runs. It must be mentioned that KL Rahul started opening the batting again in the longest format in the absence of Rohit Sharma in the Perth Test against Australia. He was dropped down the order once Rohit decided to open the batting in the Melbourne Test. However, Rohit's retirement from Tests paved the way once again for Rahul to open the batting.

Ishan Kishan in action for Nottinghamshire (Image via X/@ImTanujSingh) Ishan Kishan made an instant impact in his County Championship debut for Nottinghamshire, hammering a blistering 87 off just 98 deliveries against Yorkshire on Monday. Facing an attack featuring England's Dom Bess and New Zealand pacer Will O'Rourke, Kishan showcased his trademark aggressive flair, lacing his knock with 12 fours and a six at a strike rate nearing 89. Signed on a short-term contract to cover two Championship matches, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter has stepped in for South Africa's Kyle Verreynne, who is currently on Test duty in Zimbabwe. Kishan's stint includes the games against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge and Somerset in Taunton. For India, Kishan has featured in two Tests so far, with a fifty to his name, but his reputation primarily rests on his attacking white-ball exploits. In ODIs, he averages over 42 with a double hundred to his credit, while his T20I record includes nearly 800 runs at a brisk strike rate of 124. — TrentBridge (@TrentBridge) Kishan's county appearance comes after a productive IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he struck 354 runs at a healthy average of 35.40 and a strike rate exceeding 152, including a century. Poll Do you think Ishan Kishan's performance in county cricket will impact his selection for future India assignments? Yes, definitely No, it won't matter Having recently reclaimed his BCCI central contract — back in the C-grade bracket after missing out last year — Kishan's lively start in England is timely as he seeks to keep himself in the selectors' frame for future India assignments. For Nottinghamshire, the 26-year-old's fearless batting promises plenty of fireworks over the next few matches. 'Tell Jasprit Bumrah to play all 5 Tests': Sunil Gavaskar requests pacer's wife Sanjana Ganesan, gets a cheeky reply
Jasprit Bumrah (Getty Images) NEW DELHI: India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah continued his red-hot form by picking up his 14th five-wicket haul during the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, on Sunday — a feat made more impressive by the fact that four catches were dropped off his bowling. His brilliance helped India edge ahead with a slender six-run lead as England were bowled out for 465 in the second session. However, despite his heroics, Bumrah will not feature in all five Tests of the series. BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed that Bumrah's workload will be managed across the series to preserve his fitness. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Bumrah has been in sensational form in 2024, claiming 78 wickets at an astonishing average of 15.07, with six five-wicket hauls. In stark contrast, all other Indian pacers combined have taken 80 wickets at 33.48 with just one five-for in the same period. Such has been Bumrah's impact that cricketing greats Sunil Gavaskar and Cheteshwar Pujara even made a lighthearted request to his wife, sports broadcaster Sanjana Ganesan, asking her to convince him to play the full series. With this latest effort, Bumrah has equaled Kapil Dev's record of 12 five-wicket hauls in away Tests — but achieved it in just 34 matches compared to Kapil's 66. His overseas dominance includes five four-wicket hauls in Australia, three each in England and South Africa, and two in the West Indies. Remarkably, only two of Bumrah's 14 five-wicket hauls have come on Indian soil. Greenstone Lobo predicts winner of IND vs ENG series | Who Has the Astrological Edge? He also became the first Indian bowler to take 10 five-wicket hauls in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia). He is now just two behind Pakistan legend Wasim Akram, who leads with 11 such hauls in those nations. Overall, Bumrah has 210 wickets in 46 Tests at an outstanding average of 19.33 and an economy rate of 2.77. His best Test bowling figures remain 6 for 27. While India have five other pacers in the squad, Bumrah's recent performances underline just how irreplaceable he is — even as the team looks to balance workload with long-term sustainability.
