Sale points: No complaint of livestock disease received: minister
LAHORE: Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq has said that no complaint of livestock disease or dengue has been received at any sale point so far.
He expressed these views presiding over a meeting held on Friday to review the Eid cleanliness plan and arrangements for the sacrificial animal sale points. Special Secretary Local Government Asia Gul and Additional Secretary Ahmer Kaifi were also present. At the same time, CEOs of waste management companies and municipal chief officers from across Punjab participated through a video link. Punjab Cattle Marketing, Management and Development Company (PCMMDC) CEO Taseer Ahmed and CEOs of waste management companies gave a presentation on the arrangements.
On this occasion, he demonstrated a resolve to provide outstanding cleanliness facilities on Eid-ul-Azha, stating that this year, more work will be done than last year to achieve the targets set by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. He further said that each waste management company will distribute eco-friendly waste bags for safe disposal of waste; a total of 11.698 million waste bags will be distributed across the province. It is estimated that 360,657 tons of waste will be collected during the three days of Eid, he added.
According to him, currently 124,672 human resources are available under the Suthra Punjab programme; however, 15,204 additional recruitments have also been made temporarily for Eid. Currently, the number of equipment available in Punjab is 29,638, while an additional 125,794 equipment and machinery will be arranged for Eid. Moreover, 3870 primary collection centres and 4262 UC camps have been established in Punjab. Awareness camps have been activated in every city and union council where staff will be present. Moreover, he directed to setting up of control rooms in the offices of municipal committees, adding that each waste management company will monitor the cleaning operation from its control room; the central control room in Lahore will monitor the overall situation.
'In addition to the Shahpur Kanjran Model Cattle Market, five sale points are functioning in Lahore. In the remaining areas of the province, 28 markets of PCMMDC have been declared as sales points. In addition, 180 sales points have been established by the Punjab Local Government Department. Moreover, 84 cattle markets are active on their scheduled days every week,' he added.

Deaths from Congo virus
Listen to article Just this week, five fatal cases of the Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), commonly called Congo fever, have been reported in the country. Three of the deaths happened in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and two in Karachi. The deaths in Karachi – of two men ageing 25 and 42 – mark the first in Sindh this year from Congo virus. Both succumbed within days of their diagnoses, highlighting the severity of the disease and the lack of timely intervention, medical preparedness, and public awareness surrounding it. Despite being endemic and officially recognised as a major public health threat, the prevalence of Congo virus is not widely documented in Pakistan. Symptoms of the disease can include fever, muscle pains, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea, and even bleeding under the skin. The virus is mainly spread to humans through tick bites or by coming into contact with the blood or tissue of infected animals, which exacerbates its spread during and after the Eid-ul Azha season. This year, roughly 6.8 million animals were sacrificed in Pakistan, according to the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA). However, the country lacks a proper system required to manage the health and safety risks of such a large-scale event. Livestock are often brought into the city without regulatory health screening and temporary cattle markets are erected without an understanding of biosecurity protocols. The use of gloves, protective clothing and proper disposal of animal waste is advised by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) ahead of the festival but not only are these practices barely observed, they are often considered unnecessary and needless. Unfortunately, prevention and care are the only options for managing the Congo virus as there are no FDA- or WHO-approved drugs for CCHF, or a commercially available vaccine. Therefore, the government must boost its efforts to strengthen surveillance, public awareness and biosecurity measures to prevent wider outbreaks in the future.

Congo virus claims three lives in K-P
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Health Adviser Ehtesham Ali has confirmed that three individuals have died from the Congo virus so far in the province, while one patient currently undergoing treatment at the hospital has tested positive. Additionally, six suspected patients are admitted and are undergoing diagnostic procedures. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of precious lives due to the Congo virus at Hayatabad Medical Complex. According to the adviser, two of the deceased patients - both from Karak district - succumbed to the virus last night, while a third, hailing from North Waziristan, passed away on June 16. He attributed the recent outbreak to the lack of precautionary measures during Eid celebrations as animal markets had been established across the province. Ehtesham Ali appealed to the public to strictly follow the health department's guidelines for Congo virus prevention and to exercise caution when handling livestock to avert further loss of life. He further informed that the Department of Health has activated its Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) system to monitor and respond to Congo virus cases promptly. District Health Officers (DHOs) in the affected areas have been notified, and contact tracing along with sanitization efforts are underway at the homes of the deceased to prevent the virus from spreading. It may be recalled that last week, two patients affected by the Congo virus were admitted to HMC in Peshawar with their condition reported to be out of danger initially. According to the hospital spokesperson, 28-year-old Aijaz from Karak was brought to the hospital in critical condition on June 14. Another 23-year-old patient, Safiyan, also from Karak, was admitted on June 15. After receiving medical treatment, both patients are now stable and no longer in critical condition, he claimed. The spokesperson added that both affected individuals work in animal care. In April, Pakistan's National Institute of Health (NIH) issued public health advisories regarding the risks of Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) .

Thousands of people visit hospitals during & after Eid holidays
LAHORE: Thousands of people with complaints of food-poisoning and abdominal pain brought to different city hospitals during and after the Eid days. As per reports, around 2,500 people were brought to Jinnah Hospital, about 2000 to Mayo Hospital, around 1500 to Services Hospital, about 1000 to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and about 3000 to LGH with complaints of stomach pain, heartburn, stomach irritation and high blood pressure. Most of the patients were discharged after providing medical treatment while a few who were critical were admitted to the hospitals. A number of cases of gastroenteritis were also reported at Lahore division's other health facilities, including Government Shahdara Hospital, Kot Khawaja Saeed Hospital and Government Mozang Hospital. The emergency wards of the city's major hospitals are witnessing increased number of gastroenteritis patients. Health experts advised the people to drink clean water, eat healthy food and avoid going outdoors during the ongoing hot season. Sources in the Punjab Specialised Healthcare & Medical Education Department stated that the number of patients of gastrointestinal disease in the city had surged during the last four days. A similar situation was reported from several other cities of Punjab, including Multan, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sheikhupura, Sialkot and Rawalpindi, the sources added. It may be added that there is tradition that on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, families and friends hold gatherings, enjoy eating meat of the sacrificed animals and other foods, ignoring precautionary measures and falling ill as a result of overeating. Every year, emergency situation erupts at hospitals and thousands of people are admitted with gastrointestinal issues. As per the direction of CM Punjab, as many as 10,033 patients were provided with the free medical facilities in the General Hospital Emergency Department without any interruption and without any slip fees during the four holidays of Eid-ul-Azha. While 2,047 X-rays, 621 ultrasounds and 513 CT scans of patients were performed. Amiruddin Medical College Principal Prof Dr Muhammad Farooq Afzal and MS LGH Dr Faryad Hussain said that under the guidance of Provincial Minister for Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education department Khawaja Salman Rafique, health professionals are alert to provide quality medical facilities to patients and they will continue to fulfil their professional responsibilities in the future as well. MS Dr Faryad Hussain stated that free dialysis was done for patients suffering from kidney diseases treatment were also ongoing in the women and children departments. Prof Farooq Afzal urged the doctors to continue to raise awareness among the citizens about prevention of infectious diseases along with treatment so that the public can protect themselves by taking precautionary measures.
