KOTA KINABALU: Three individuals were each sentenced to five years in prison by the High Court here on Friday for assisting an organised criminal group involved in a RM24.2 million fixed deposit fraud. Self-employed Sugumaran K. Ponniah, 56, teacher Subramaniam Thangavelu, 57, and fisherman Hasran Magin, 47, pleaded guilty separately before Judge Datuk Duncan Sikodol.

They were convicted under Section 130W of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 10 years' imprisonment. Man slashed in drunken brawl in Nilai

KUALA LUMPUR: A man was seriously injured after he was believed to have been slashed and beaten during a drunken brawl involving a group of men in Bandar Baru Nilai early this morning. Nilai district police chief Superintendent Abdul Malik Hasim said they received a report about the incident at 6.08am. "The complaint was lodged by a medical officer from Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang, Selangor, who had treated a local man in his 30s who arrived with blood on his face and body. "The victim was immediately admitted to the Red Zone of the Emergency Department for urgent treatment," he said in a statement. Investigations by the district police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Department found that the victim had been involved in an altercation in front of a fast-food outlet in Bandar Baru Nilai. "The victim is believed to have been attacked with a parang and a wooden stick by several unidentified individuals. "He is currently in stable condition, with injuries to his head and legs," he said. Preliminary investigations found that the fight did not involve elements of gangsterism, personal vendettas or previous conflicts. "It is believed to have been triggered by a spontaneous altercation while all parties involved were intoxicated. "This led to a misunderstanding, provocation and a physical fight," he said. He said the case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons, Section 427 for mischief and causing damage, and Section 326 for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a weapon.

Local man held at KLIA for attempting to smuggle four gibbons

The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) said in a statement today that the animals were found inside the 34-year-old suspect's luggage. He was a passenger on a Batik Air flight bound for Mumbai, India, scheduled to depart Friday night. 'The suspect was detained on the spot and taken to the Aeropolis police headquarters for further action,' the statement said. AKPS said the gibbons have been handed over to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks of Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan) for investigation and further action. The case is being investigated under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 and the International Trade in Endangered Species Act 2008. Advertisement The arrest was part of enhanced integrated checks launched this month in collaboration with Aviation Security (AVSEC) and Perhilitan, targeting wildlife smuggling through high-risk aviation entry points. Sibu police launch manhunt after rape suspect escapes in handcuffs and purple lockup uniform

SIBU, June 22 — Police have launched a manhunt for an Indonesian detainee who escaped from the Sibu Central Police Station lockup yesterday. Sibu Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the incident occurred at around 4 pm while the 25-year -old detainee was still under lawful police custody. 'The suspect was on remand for investigation under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code for the offence of rape. At the time of escape, he was still wearing a purple lockup uniform and was handcuffed,' he said in a statement today. Members of the public with relevant information are urged to contact Investigating Officer ASP Mingat Bakil at 084-344111 or 019-8867978, or to report to the nearest police station. 'We appeal to the public to cooperate by immediately providing any information that may assist in the investigation and re-arrest of the detainee,' Zulkipli said. — Bernama
