COVID-19 virus protein triggers immune attack on healthy cells: study
JERUSALEM, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Israeli researchers have discovered that a protein from the SARS-CoV-2 virus, responsible for COVID-19, can cause the immune system to attack healthy cells mistakenly, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem said in a statement on Tuesday.
The study, published in Cell Reports, sheds light on how severe COVID-19 complications may occur and suggests new ways to prevent immune-driven damage from the virus.
The researchers found that the virus's nucleocapsid protein (NP), which normally helps package the virus's genetic material inside infected cells, can spread to nearby uninfected epithelial cells.
Once on the surface of these healthy cells, NP would be mistakenly identified by the immune system as a threat. The immune system then deploys anti-NP antibodies, which mark these uninfected cells for destruction.
The process triggers the classical complement pathway, a part of the immune response that leads to inflammation and tissue damage, contributing to severe COVID-19 symptoms and possibly long COVID.
Using lab-grown cells, advanced imaging, and samples from COVID-19 patients, the researchers found that NP binds to a type of molecule on cell surfaces. The binding causes the protein to cluster on healthy cells, further confusing the immune system.
The study also found that the drug enoxaparin, a common blood thinner and heparin analog, blocks NP from sticking to healthy cells. In both lab tests and patient samples, enoxaparin helped prevent immune attacks by occupying the binding sites that NP uses.
According to the researchers, the discovery may offer new hope for reducing immune-related complications in COVID-19 and potentially other viral infections.

'In 2020, I was placed in an induced coma at the intensive care unit of Hospital Sultanah Aminah after contracting Covid-19. 'Everyone thought I would not survive, but miraculously, I recovered,' said the mother of eight and grandmother of 23. 'I am grateful to have been given a second chance at life, and now, to be able to perform the haj.' Rohaya, who manages funeral rites at a mosque in Johor Baru, said her journey was sponsored by an anonymous donor. 'My husband was the one who received the offer from Tabung Haji, but he asked for me to accompany him as he suffers from asthma, and a donor stepped in.' In his speech, Onn Hafiz said, 'I believe under the guidance of Tabung Haji, state government and Johor Islamic Religious Council, our pilgrims have been well prepared to fulfil their religious duties. 'Take this opportunity to perform your haj with sincerity. I also ask that you pray for the well-being and future of our state,' he said. Onn Hafiz also reminded pilgrims to pray for the state's continued peace and prosperity during their time in the Holy Land. Chinese medical team provides free healthcare to children in Botswana
GABORONE, June 22 (Xinhua) -- The 17th batch of the Chinese medical team in Botswana on Sunday conducted a free medical outreach service and made donations at the SOS Children's Village in Tlokweng, located on the outskirts of Gaborone, the capital of the southern African country. In a speech at the event, Motshwari Kitso, national director of SOS Children's Villages Botswana, expressed deep appreciation for the support the organization has received from the Chinese Embassy in Botswana and the Chinese community over the years. SOS Children's Villages Botswana, a nongovernmental organization that supports children and young people without parental care or at risk of losing it, operates three centers in Tlokweng village of South-East District, Francistown city of North-East District, and Serowe town of Central District. Currently, the organization cares for about 320 children at its three centers and supports an additional 1,500 children in the communities, Kitso said, expecting more medical outreach services in the future at the other two centers and in the surrounding communities. Community leader Lazarus Ikalafeng welcomed the arrival of the Chinese medical team and their outreach service, which encourages people to prioritize their health by coming forward to see a doctor. DAR ES SALAAM, June 22 (Xinhua) -- The 34th batch of the Chinese medical team in Tanzania's Zanzibar provided free medical care on Saturday to more than 200 orphans and staff members at a local orphanage under a program called "Angles' Care Initiative." Chinese doctors from various departments, including internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and dentistry, conducted comprehensive physical examinations for both the children and staff.
