'I tried the 'World's Best' rated champagne - I can't get over the price'

Daily Mirror3 days ago

When you think about champagne, most people assume it comes with a pretty hefty price tag - but that's all about to change. The 'World's Best' champagne has been named, and it definitely isn't going to break the bank.
With the likes of Dom Perignon, Verve Clicquot and Moet out there, when you think of the best bubbles out there, you wouldn't associate it with Aldi - however the budget supermarket has just won gold in the champagne category at the World Drinks Awards 2025.
The Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut impressed the experts, and what's even better - it costs just £14.95. Crafted from a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier the champagne has ripe apple, soft red fruit and delicate floral notes.
It impressively scored higher than champagnes more than three times the price to be crowned the champion - including G.H. Martel Honoré de Balzac Edition Limitée Brut Champagne, which retails at £49.68 – making it over 70% more expensive. Balzac Honoré de Balzac Rosé Brut came in second place, while the limited edition Brut came in third.
Speaking about the win, Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, said: "To have our £14.95 Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut recognised as the best in the world is proof that exceptional quality doesn't have to come with an eye-watering price tag. It's a proud moment not just for Aldi, but for our customers who can enjoy world-class champagne without breaking the bank."
When I saw the news, I knew I had to get my hands on a bottle to try - especially while the sun is out. Now as a prosecco lover over champagne, I was eager to see how this would compare. While the bottle itself looked fancy, and would look great on any dinner table or cooling in an ice bucket - it's what's inside that counts, right?
From the first pour the bubbles were strong and it looked seriously fizzy. I was also shocked by how pale in colour it was, as usually I notice champagne has a much deeper yellow colour as opposed to prosecco which is a lot clearer and lighter, so I already knew this was going to be good.
From the first sip I noticed it was very dry, but I like it this way, it was also very very smooth and crisp, especially when chilled. I could also notice the apple, followed by a nice after taste of the floral notes. I would say it is very much a mix of a dry Pinot and a Chardonnay - and I am seriously impressed.
If I was doing this as a blind taste test, I would definitely think this bottle had a huge price tag. It's safe to say this is going to be my summer drink, and it won't cost me too much either!
Aldi's Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut (£14.95, 75cl) is available in stores nationwide now.

The Scottish town set for a new Aldi as seaside spot branded 'priority location'

The budget supermarket is expanding its portfolio across Scotland and UK. Aldi is expanding its UK portfolio by announcing a list of 20 potential locations for new stores. Included among them was one much-loved Scottish seaside town. The budget German supermarket has revealed that Largs in North Ayrshire is one of its "priority locations", as it seeks sites for new stores in a multi-million pound investment to bring its budget prices to more people. ‌ According to Aldi, the potential location for a new site should be able to accommodate a 20,000 sqft store with around 100 parking spaces, with access to a main road that offers good access and visibility being desirable. ‌ As the UK's fourth largest supermarket, the discounted retailer currently operates more than 1,050 stores across the UK, with 109 based in Scotland alone. However, the firm has set its sights on expanding even further, as it has invested £650million this year alone into opening new stores, with a long-term goal of 1,500 overall. And Largs, known for its Viking history as well as top class ice cream and fish and chips, appears earmarked for one of the new sites, providing a suitable spot can be found in the town. Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, said: "We want to make high-quality, affordable food accessible to everyone, and that means opening new stores in the communities that need them most. "The response from the public has been invaluable in helping us identify where demand is greatest, and where we need to focus our efforts on finding the sites that can become new stores." ‌ It comes after it was announced that four Scottish Aldi stores were set for a "refresh" over the summer months, with the move affecting Inverness, Ayr, Cowdenbeath, and Cupar. The plan would see each store undergo a set of refurbishments and enhancements that would "enhance the customer experience." ‌ Alongside refurbishing the Scottish based stores, the discounted supermarket also announced that it would be expanding even further with 10 new stores this summer across West Yorkshire, the Midlands and London. It also comes after we reported that Aldi has resubmitted plans to Perth and Kinross Council for a £4.8 million new store on Necessity Brae replacing the existing one on Glasgow Road. While the plans were initially approved unanimously by councillors in May 2022 and February 2023, they were quickly quashed by Tesco and the Court of Session in April 26, 2024. ‌ It marks the third time the firm has resubmitted plans, and it came after it had been "inundated" with support from over 800 Perth residents who signed a petition to get the new Aldi. Major Scots retail park with Aldi, B&M & Home Bargains hits market for £18M

FOR SALE Major Scots retail park with Aldi, B&M & Home Bargains hits market for £18M Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A POPULAR Scots retail park has gone on the market with a price tag of a cool £18million Portlethen Retail Park, just south of Aberdeen, boasts high street staples such as Home Bargains, Aldi, Matalan and B&M. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 The park was once the site of a former Homebase store, which closed in 2018 The 107,072 sq ft space brings in a total annual rental income of £1.35m per year. The park is being sold by agents Sheridan Keane who say the sale reflects an 'attractive' yield of 7%. The retail park comprises four single-storey units with metal-clad exteriors, glazed shopfronts which look onto the car park and service access to the rear. The site also hosts 530 car parking spaces and is neighbours with an adjacent Asda store and McDonalds drive thru restaurant, which helps to attract customers. The park was once the site of a former Homebase store, which closed in 2018, as part of a UK-wide restructuring when the home improvement firm was sold to Hilco for £1. The building was then split into two new units and let to Aldi and Home Bargains. Bargain supermarket Aldi opened in October 2021, which was attended by Olympic rower Karen Bennett, part of Team GB. The new store created 35 jobs in the area and has emerged as one of the park's strongest performers, with £17.9m turnover in the year to December 2023. B&M, which has extended to add a garden centre, reported a £4.4m in turnover last year, while Home Bargains reported £4.2m, as reported by the Press and Journal. Matalan generated £1.1m in the year to February 2024 and has sublet 10,000 sq ft to Argos until 2029. Why are so many shops going bust? Portlethen Retail Park serves a catchment population of around 500,000 and is strategically positioned on one of the north-east's main arterial roads. It is being marketed for sale for £18,150,000. Agents say the site offers a secure income profile with 'undoubted covenants' and a tenant mix aligned with current consumer demand for value-led retail. Shoppers in the area spend around £19m a year on non-food items, providing strong demand for retailers. For shoppers, the sale won't mean any changes. All four main stores – Aldi, Home Bargains, B&M and Matalan – are staying put, and the retail park will continue to operate as normal under new ownership.
