Doctors reject imposition of professional tax
Various medics associations in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa have rejected professional tax imposed on doctors by the provincial government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
President of the Pakistan Doctors Council K-P chapter, Dr Majid, addressed a joint press conference at the Peshawar Press Club Wednesday alongside leaders from doctors' organizations, including Dr Janbaz Afridi of the Peoples Doctors Forum, Dr Adil of the Young Doctors Association, and Dr Wasim of the Allied Doctors.
Dr Majid strongly condemned the provincial government of PTI for imposing an oppressive professional tax on doctors. He said the Doctors Council categorically rejects this tax and has formed a three-member committee to negotiate with the government for its immediate withdrawal. He also demanded the cessation of ongoing actions related to this tax.
The council called on the government to immediately revoke letters issued by the Excise and Taxation Department directing deductions from doctors' salaries, particularly concerning finance directors and accountants of Medical Teaching Institutes (MTIs) in K-P.
He further demanded salary increases for all doctors in the province, including house officers, trainee medical officers, and medical officers, in keeping with the current inflation rate in the provincial budget.
He urged the Health Care Commission to immediately stop imposing heavy fines on doctors under the pretext of registration and to develop a proper, consultative procedure for such matters.
Highlighting ongoing harassment of doctors over drug sales licenses, Majid demanded a halt to these practices and urged the government to implement court rulings favoring doctors in this regard.
The president criticized the Public Service Commission (PSC) for not advertising any job vacancies since 2017, calling it a grave injustice to aspiring medical professionals. He demanded that job postings resume immediately to recruit new doctors.

K-P budget to be approved only after Imran's nod, says CM's aide
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister's Advisor on Information Barrister Dr Saif has said that the provincial budget will not be approved without consultation with Patron-in-Chief Imran Khan. He noted that people voted for the vision of the Patron-in-Chief therefore all key decisions, including the budget, should reflect the public mandate. Speaking to the media, Dr Saif warned that people would not tolerate any disrespect to their democratic mandate. He further cautioned that any attempt to impose an emergency in the province would be short-lived, adding, "A fake government will not survive even a day." The advisor clarified that the authority to dissolve the provincial assembly rested with the Chief Minister, who could exercise it at his discretion. In contrast, the federal and other provincial governments rely on Form 47 - which is based on a "false foundation" and can be toppled with the slightest push, said the K-P CM aide. He reiterated that the people of K-P voted for the ideology of Imran Khan thus all significant decisions must be made in consultation with him. He urged the federal government to refrain from "petty tactics". He accused the federal government of relentlessly trying to undermine the K-P government, adding that the people of the province were being punished for supporting the Patron-in-Chief. "Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa is a vital unit of the federation, and weakening it is tantamount to weakening Pakistan itself," said Saif. He warned that any conspiracy against the province would have serious repercussions. Under the vision of the Patron-in-Chief and the leadership of Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, the province is witnessing rapid development, which is hard to digest by the federal government. He termed K-P a stronghold of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), adding the movement for the release of the Patron-in-Chief will gain full momentum from the province. He alleged that false cases had been registered to confine the Patron-in-Chief, but assured that all such fabricated cases would soon be dismissed.

PM's defamation suit against IK: Proceeding put off till tomorrow
LAHORE: A sessions court on Saturday adjourned the proceedings of a defamation suit of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif till June 23 as his cross examination was not concluded. The court however, asked the prime minister to file a formal application to present a legal notice to PTI former chairman in defamation suit. Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appeared before the court through video link and complained about the delay in the proceedings of his defamation suit against PTI founding chairman Imran Khan. 'Several hearings have taken place before the court, but the proceedings have not moved beyond stamps and signatures,' the prime minister said, addressing the court during his cross-examination. During the cross-examination, the counsel for the defendant, asked the prime minister why his affidavit did not mention who identified him before the oath commissioner. At this, the plaintiff's lawyer objected to the question, saying the issue had already been discussed. Being irked with recurring questions, PM Shehbaz sarcastically said while the time of the court and the defendant's counsel was considered precious, his own time, although at a much lower level, was also valuable. The court at this also remarked that it seemed the Imran's lawyer was using the proceedings as an excuse to keep seeing the prime minister repeatedly. PM Shehbaz, however, explained that the oath commissioner knew him in his capacity as the then chief minister of Punjab. The defendant's counsel stated that the suit mentioned a legal notice was sent to his client on May 8, 2017, but no such notice was attached with the document. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
