The moon will rise with Venus and the ice giant Neptune in the pre-dawn sky on Thursday, May 22.
Stargazers in the U.S. will see the celestial trio rise around 3:30 a.m. EDT (0715 GMT), with the waning crescent moon holding the high ground over magnitude 1.14 Saturn, which will be visible around four degrees to its lower left in the eastern sky. Neptune — invisible to the naked eye at magnitude 7.92 — can be found lurking roughly two degrees (or two finger widths) to the left of Saturn. (On the magnitude scale used by astronomers, lower numbers signify brighter objects). For example, at its brightest, the planet Venus shines with a magnitude of about -4.6.)
Neptune may be visible under dark skies with the help of powerful 25x100 binoculars as a star-like point of light, but a small, 4-inch telescope capable of around 150x magnification will be needed to resolve its pale blue disk, according to telescope manufacturer Celestron. Saturn, meanwhile, will shine brightly through binoculars, with the planet's iconic ring system appearing as small bumps, or 'ears' either side of the planet's disk, according to NASA.
However, the Saturnian system truly comes alive when viewed through a telescope, which will reveal details in the gas giant's rings, along with a diverse collection of gravitationally bound moons. Larger backyard telescopes with a roughly 8-inch aperture may even be able to resolve the Cassini Division — a gap between Saturn's outer A ring and B ring that comes close to spanning the width of the planet Mercury, under good conditions.

The crescent moon also makes for a fascinating viewing target. The northwestern region is home to the smooth, dark plains of the lunar maria (Latin for "seas"), while the brighter southern highlands are covered in craters left by ancient asteroid impacts. The moon's crescent will slim over the coming days as it approaches the new moon phase on May 27, when it will vanish into the glare of the sun.
The following morning, on May 23, the moon will rise to the left of Saturn and Neptune, closing in on a striking close encounter with Venus, a brilliant "morning star" hovering close to the eastern horizon. Venus —often dubbed Earth's twin is climbing higher each morning as it heads towards greatest western elongation on May 31 — the point in its orbit when it appears farthest from the sun in the morning sky, according to in-the-sky.org.

Earth's satellites at risk if asteroid smashes into Moon: study
If a huge asteroid smashes into the Moon in 2032, the gigantic explosion would send debris streaming towards Earth that would threaten satellites and create a spectacular meteor shower, according to researchers. Earlier this year there were briefly fears that the 60-metre-wide (200-foot-wide) asteroid called 2024 YR4, which is big enough to level a city, would strike Earth on December 22, 2032. It was given the highest chance -- 3.1 percent -- of hitting our home planet that scientists have ever measured for such a giant space rock. Subsequent observations from telescopes definitively ruled out a direct hit on Earth. However, the odds that it will crash into the Moon have risen to 4.3 percent, according to data from the James Webb space telescope in May. A new preprint study, which has not been peer-reviewed, is the first to estimate how such a collision could affect Earth. It would be the largest asteroid to hit the Moon in around 5,000 years, lead study author Paul Wiegert of Canada's University of Western Ontario told AFP. The impact would be "comparable to a large nuclear explosion in terms of the amount of energy released", he added. Up to 100 million kilograms (220 million pounds) of material would shoot out from the Moon's surface, according to a series of simulations run by the researchers. If the asteroid hit the side of the Moon facing Earth -- which is roughly a 50-percent chance -- up to 10 percent of this debris could be pulled in by Earth's gravity over the following days, they said. - 'Like a bullet' - Earth's atmosphere would protect the surface from the millimetre- to centimetre-sized lunar rocks, Weigert said. 0.04-2.54 But these meteors could be capable of destroying some satellites -- and there are expected to be a lot more of those orbiting the planet by 2032. "A centimetre-sized rock travelling at tens of thousands of metres per second is a lot like a bullet," Wiegert said. In the days after the impact, there could be more than 1,000 times the normal number of meteors threatening Earth's satellites, he added. Meanwhile, those of us on the ground would be treated to a "spectacular" meteor shower lighting up the night sky, the study said. But the current odds of a direct hit on the near side of the Moon remain at just two percent, Wiegert emphasised. The asteroid is not expected to be visible again until 2028, so the world will have to wait to find out more. If a direct hit is eventually found to be likely, humanity probably has enough time to plan a mission to spare the Moon. "I'm sure it will be considered," Wiegert said. The asteroid is half as wide and has 10 percent of the mass of Dimorphos, which NASA's DART mission smashed into in 2022, successfully changing its trajectory. If 2024 YR4 is on a collision course with the Moon, it would be "a good target" for another test of our planetary defences, Wiegert said. But if not, trying to deflect something zooming so close to Earth could be a little "dangerous", he added. The treasure trove of platinum on the moon

The moon is likely to become the next mining hot spot, as there may be extensive platinum and other metal deposits in its craters. Guidelines about resource mining on the moon are still not solidified, so this could lead to problems with more countries and private companies trying to stake their claim. But the potential for platinum could also entice private companies to invest more in space exploration. There might be more than $1 trillion worth of platinum deposits on the moon, according to a paper published in the journal Planetary and Space Science. Of the 1.3 million craters on the moon with a diameter greater than one kilometer, "nearly 6,500 were made by asteroids containing commercial quantities of platinum," said New Scientist. This "highlights the potential viability and profitability of lunar mining endeavors compared to mining asteroids in orbit," said the paper. Countries have already been involved in a modern space race to put humans back on the moon, and the profit potential could bring more interested parties. Nobody owns the moon because of the Outer Space Treaty of 1967. But as the potential for resources becomes imminent, the rules are likely to change. The treaty notably "leaves key questions unanswered," Rebecca Connolly, an adjunct senior lecturer at the University of Sydney Law School, said to New Scientist. This includes "clarity on the rules and governance for ownership of extracted resources, commercial licensing rights, equitable benefits sharing, environment protection standards to avoid harm, and regulations for long-term occupation and permanent infrastructure on the moon." To address some of the unknowns, NASA and the U.S. spearheaded the Artemis Accords in 2020. These "provide a common set of principles to enhance the governance of the civil exploration and use of outer space," said NASA. Though the accords are nonbinding, 55 countries have signed on as of last month. Russia and China, two of the most proactive countries trying to reach the moon, have not signed on. A monetary incentive for reaching the moon could change space exploration as we know it. Astronomy is "done to satiate our curiosity," Jayanth Chennamangalam, an astrophysicist and the lead author of the study, said to New Scientist. It has "very few practical applications" and is "mostly paid for by taxpayer money." If we can "monetize space resources, be it on the moon or on asteroids, private enterprises will invest in the exploration of the solar system." While that could lead to wider research being done, it can also lead to the exploitation of the moon. It was recently listed as a threatened historic site for this very reason. "Take one last good look at the moon tonight," Luis Prada said at Vice. "There might be a time when the moon is not so innocent and pretty anymore and you only see cynical corporate greed."
