Scottie Thompson proud of Davao's historic title in Palaro basketball
Davao Region has won its maiden title in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa secondary basketball and no one is prouder than former Davao athlete Scottie Thompson.
Thompson, who bannered the Davao squad in 2010, said he is proud especially since his former teammate Jess Evangelio steered the team to the title.
"Truly proud sa Davao region, especially kay Coach Jess, kasama ko siya representing Davao City in 2010," Thompson recalled.
"Para sa kanya 'yun, ibinigay ni God sa kanya 'yun kasi ang dami niyang history sa Palarong Pambansa, especially marami na siyang nakasali doon as a player. Binigay ni God sa kanya as a coach 'yung gold medal para sa region."
Thompson said the Palarong Pambansa in 2010 was a turning point in his career as he was discovered there by the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA.
"Without Palarong Pambansa, hindi ako makakarating sa Manila, hindi ako makukuha ng Perpetual. Doon ako na-scout so malaking bagay ang Palarong Pambansa," Thompson said, adding that the current crop of student-athletes are seen on bigger platforms.
With Davao taking home the crown, is Thompson also looking to bring in some of the athletes from his hometown to Manila, particularly in Perpetual where he serves as team manager of the men's basketball team?
"May kinakausap kami. Sana, alam naman nating bakbakan sa pagkuha ng players," Thompson said.
"Sana madaan ko sa kausap 'yung teammate ko dati na 'yung mga pinakamagaling namin, makuha namin. Kung puwede lahat eh," he said in jest.
"Sana may makuha kami especially galing sa hometown ko and matulungan na makapaglaro rito."
"Malay mo, isa sa kanila ang future ng Philippine basketball."

Alex Eala loses steam vs. Polish foe to bow out of Nottingham Open
Alex Eala staged a late comeback in Set 2, but ultimately fell short to surrender a 6-4, 6-3 loss against Magda Linette of Poland in the Round of 32 of Nottingham Open on Tuesday night (Manila time) in Great Britain. The 20-year-old Filipina tennis star thus bowed out of the grass tournament after gutting out a pair of victories in the qualifiers. Eala dropped the opening frame then found herself in a 5-3 hole in Set 2 after the sixth-seeded Linette erased an early deficit in Game 8 to cruise to the match point cushion over the Philippine bet. The world no. 77 in women's tennis then staged a rally in Game 9, winning back-to-back points to create a 30-0 cushion. Linette, though, retaliated and even took a 40-30 lead before Eala forced a deuce four times in an extended game. Linette then powered through to hack out the victory to boot out the Filipina. EAC upsets Perpetual for third win in a row in Filoil preseason action
Red-hot Emilio Aguinaldo College claimed another scalp after upsetting University of the Perpetual Help System DALTA with a convincing 77-52 win in the 18th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Monday. The Generals rode on the steady shooting of Brianne Angeles, Joshua Tolentino, and Jon Cudiamat to race to their third straight win and hike their record to 5-1, tying De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde at second spot. Angeles top-scored with 12 points laced with four rebounds and one assist while Tolentino and Cudiamat each chipped in 11 markers as the Generals continued to prove that they're a legit title contender come NCAA Season 101. 'Ever since naman, naniniwala kami na kaya naming maging contender. Ang maganda lang is nagde-deliver na yung mga bata sa sistema namin," EAC head coach Jerson Cabiltes said. EAC, which narrowly missed a Final Four spot last Season 100 due to a 9-9 record, was off to a hot start against the struggling Perpetual with Tolentino and other key vets in Kyle Ochavo and Nicole Quinal leading their first quarter barrage, 24-11. It was all EAC since then with Jethro Bacud even sending them to a 26-point cushion after his layup midway in the fourth period, 70-44. The loss, meanwhile, sent the ALTAs to a 1-4 slate. Only Patrick Sleat could come up with a double-digit production after the former FEU standout posted 10 points. Before this game, EAC had also frustrated defending champion Mapua University, 71-64, before pulling off a tight 75-71 escape victory against Jose Rizal University.
