Microsoft brings free OpenAI's Sora video generator to Bing mobile app for users

Hindustan Times03-06-2025

Microsoft has rolled out a new video creation feature in its Bing mobile app, allowing users to generate short videos from text prompts using OpenAI's Sora model. This marks the first time Microsoft has offered public access to Sora's video generation capabilities without a direct fee.
The feature, called Bing Video Creator, is now available in the Bing app for iOS and Android users who are logged in with a Microsoft account. The tool enables users to create videos by typing short descriptions. Each generated video runs for five seconds and comes in a vertical 9:16 format. Microsoft plans to add horizontal format support later.

At launch, users can create up to 10 free videos using the fast generation option. After that, each additional video requires 100 Microsoft Rewards points. Users can earn these points by using Bing for searches or shopping at the Microsoft Store. For instance, a Bing search on a PC earns 5 points, up to a daily limit of 150 points.
Each user can queue up to three video prompts at a time. Microsoft noted that even in fast mode, generating a video might take several hours. The standard speed option is free and also available to all users.

To use Bing Video Creator, users must open the Bing mobile app, tap the menu icon at the bottom right, and select "Video Creator" from the list. Alternatively, users can begin by typing a prompt like 'Create a video of…' in the Bing search bar.
The tool guides users to provide specific and detailed prompts for better results. Once a video is ready, users receive a notification. The videos can be downloaded and shared, but they remain available on Bing for only 90 days.

Microsoft plans to expand the feature to desktop versions of Bing and to Copilot Search in the near future. Currently, no option exists to extend the length of videos beyond five seconds.

Amazon, Microsoft use AI to generate 25% of their code: Will it take away jobs of software engineers in 2025?

Shift in tech jobs amid AI boom Live Events Has it affected Computer Science stream? (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel The technology sector's brutal job cuts continues into 2025. With the tech industry being roiled by mass layoffs and hiring freezes, the leading culprit to be blamed for this grim picture is the technology itself. A recent Pew study found that Americans think software engineers will be most affected by generative AI, according to report reveals the major tech giants-including Google's parent company Alphabet and Microsoft- now depend on AI to generate nearly 25 percent of the code. With AI generative tools becoming deeply integrated into software development workflows- it has raised serious concerns about the future of entry-level tech jobs in the US.'We're in an AI revolution, and I am a specialist in the kind of AI that we're doing the revolution with, and I can't find anything,' Chris Gropp told The growing role of AI in the field of software development is showing up in employment data. Gropp is contending with a weak job market for recent college graduates in general and the tech sector in particular. Even though employment for 22-to-27-year-olds in other fields has seen a slight increase over the past three years, jobs for computer-science and math jobs in that age group has fallen by 8 percent, the report at Microsoft and Google's parent company Alphabet have already confirmed the impact of AI on their code output. Recently, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy issued a stark message to employees: Artificial intelligence will reduce the company's corporate workforce in the coming years. 'We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today,' Jassy wrote, citing expected efficiency gains. He noted that AI will also create new kinds of roles, but the net effect is likely to be a leaner corporate staff. Jassy wrote that employees should learn how to use AI tools, experiment, and figure out 'how to get more done with scrappier teams.'A 2025 Pew Research Center survey found that 48% of Americans believe software engineers will be among the professions most affected by AI in the coming years. That's a higher percentage than for teachers, journalists, or accountants.'We know AI is affecting jobs,' Rusinkiewicz, from Princeton, told the Atlantic. 'It's making people more efficient at some or many aspects of their jobs, and therefore, perhaps companies feel they can get away with doing a bit less hiring.'The shift towards AI has not just left the tech market rattled but it has also worried tech students. Enrollment in the computer-science major has historically fluctuated with the job market. Eventually, there aren't enough computer-science graduates, salaries go up, and more people are drawn in, the report declines have always rebounded to enrollment levels higher than where they started. (And some universities, such as the University of Chicago, still haven't seen any enrollment drops.) Sam Madden, a computer-science professor at MIT, told the outlet that even if companies are employing generative AI, that will likely create more demand for software engineers, not mass layoffs in big tech, changing visa norms, and rising uncertainty around the long-term role of junior programmers, CS is no longer the default 'safe bet' it once seemed.

Why more Americans are logging in before 6 am, and not logging off

The boundaries of the traditional American workday are fast eroding. What once started with a morning commute and ended with an evening sign-off has now stretched into an unbroken cycle of pings, calls, and logins at all hours. Microsoft's latest Work Trend Index paints a clear picture of a growing problem: the 'infinite workday.'According to the report, 40% of US employees start their workday digitally before 6 am Meanwhile, 29% of workers log back in after 10 pmadvertisementThroughout the day, the average employee handles over 117 emails and 150 Microsoft Teams messages. For many, the workday begins before sunrise and continues well into the night, with little time to fully ONLINE: THE PRESSURE TO STAY VISIBLEMicrosoft calls it the 'infinite workday', and the data shows it is not just a buzzword. With remote and hybrid work models becoming the norm, the lines between professional and personal life are increasingly meetings, for instance, have jumped by 16% in the last year. Work, once confined to office hours, now follows workers into their homes, mealtimes, and even of the key reasons behind this shift is the culture of constant availability. With employees working from different locations and time zones, the pressure to always be online has feel the need to respond early, stay active late, and remain visible throughout the day. This digital presence, though, comes at a findings reveal that workers are being interrupted every 1.75 minutes on average. That adds up to 275 distractions a day. These frequent interruptions reduce focus and fragment attention, hurting overall meeting culture isn't helping either: 57% of meetings are unscheduled or impromptu, and 10% are added with less than an hour's take place during peak productivity hours, further straining technology has enabled remote work, it has also contributed to overload. Tools meant to improve efficiency now often demand constant THE WORKDAY: TECH ISN'T THE ONLY ANSWERMicrosoft suggests that artificial intelligence, such as its Copilot tool, may help reduce administrative work by summarising meetings or drafting it also warns that without changes to how work is structured, AI could worsen the chaos rather than resolve fix the problem, experts suggest a shift in how work is designed. That includes setting clear work hours, protecting uninterrupted time for focused tasks, and moving toward outcome-based performance rather than constant are being encouraged to set the tone by logging off after hours and supporting message is clear: the tools alone won't fix the problem. Rethinking work from the top down is now essential to prevent burnout and bring back balance to the American workday.- EndsMust Watch

Telangana's VeriFast app sets national benchmark in passport verification

The Telangana Police have secured the top rank in passport verification efficiency across all Indian States, owing to their digital platform VeriFast. This recognition comes ahead of Passport Seva Divas on June 24, when Director General of Intelligence B. Shivadhar Reddy will receive the Certificate of Excellence in New Delhi from the Minister of External Affairs. The VeriFast application was developed to streamline passport verification and has placed Telangana at the forefront of technological innovation in public service. The State consistently records the fastest average turnaround time (TAT) for verifications, often completing the process in under three working days, ahead of national requirements. According to national data, Telangana processes more than 2,000 passport verifications daily, with annual figures exceeding eight lakh. The system records over 95% satisfaction among applicants, thanks to its transparency, reliability, and real-time SMS updates. Most police stations report zero backlog due to dynamic reassignment and balanced workload distribution. VeriFast integrates with the State's intelligence databases to detect and prevent fraudulent applications. It follows a tiered workflow involving Field Verification Officers, Inspectors or Assistant Commissioners of Police, and Passport Verification Cells, ensuring accuracy and accountability. The platform works across Android, iOS, Windows, and Linux, eliminating the need for expensive hardware. Future upgrades will allow applicants to schedule verification slots, making the process more convenient. Its data analytics feature helps the police monitor verification trends, identify suspicious activity, and aid in crime analysis, including detecting illegal emigration rackets.
