Former England Pacer David Lawrence Dies At 61
Former England and Gloucestershire fast bowler David Valentine Lawrence has passed away at the age of 61 after battling Motor Neurone Disease (MND). After making his international debut in 1988, Lawrence played five Tests between 1988 and 1992, taking 18 wickets, including a famous five-wicket-haul against the West Indies at The Oval in 1991 - in the same innings he dismissed the great Viv Richards. His international career was tragically cut short in 1992 by a horrific knee injury sustained during a Test match in Wellington, New Zealand. In 2023, He was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, a life-shortening neurological disorder which causes muscle weakness that gets worse over a few months or years.
'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Lawrence MBE following his brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease. 'Syd' was an inspirational figure on and off the cricket field and no more so than to his family who were with him when he passed," a statement from Lawrence family shared by Gloucestershire read.
Born on January 28, 1964, Lawrence made his first-class debut in 1981 for Gloucestershire at just 17. He played 170 first-class matches for Gloucestershire, taking 477 wickets at 31.27, including a best of 7 for 47 against Warwickshire. Over a 16-year career, he became a club icon for his fearless fast bowling.
In one-day cricket, he claimed 148 wickets in 110 appearances, with a standout 6 for 20 against a Combined Universities XI in 1991 - the third best return in Gloucestershire's 50-over history.
"A proud Gloucestershire man, Syd took on every challenge with everything he could and his final contest with MND was no different. His willingness to encourage and think of others right up to the end was typical of the man he was. As President of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Syd took on the role with incredible pride and passion and loved every minute of it.
"Syd's wife Gaynor and son Buster thank everyone for the kindness and support that has been shown to them and the family so far and would ask that they are now given some time and space to grieve in private," the statement read.
Off the field, Lawrence became a powerful advocate for diversity and inclusion in cricket. As the first British-born Black cricketer to represent England, he used his platform to inspire future generations and challenge barriers within the sport.

As a fast bowler, he thrilled crowds with his pace and passion. "Even in the face of his illness, David showed extraordinary strength and dignity, continuing to uplift others with his resilience and spirit. He leaves behind a legacy that will endure in the hearts of all who love cricket. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the entire cricketing community at this time," England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Richard Thompson said in a statement.

Archer could return for the second Test against India: report
Injury-prone pacer Jofra Archer could be in the England mix for the second Test against India beginning July 2, as he is set for a red-ball comeback with Sussex at Durham in the County Championship, according to a report. The England pace bowling attack without the likes of Archer and Mark Wood has looked tepid in the opening Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar series with India, led by new skipper Shubman Gill, scoring 471 runs in the first innings at Leeds. 'Jofra Archer will return to red-ball cricket with Sussex — despite not being named in the squad for the County Championship match at Durham. If he comes through the match unscathed, he could be in the mix to play in the second Test against India at Edgbaston,' said a report in Sky Sports. It said the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed that the pacer will be in Sussex's travelling group for the four-day fixture beginning later on Sunday (June 22, 2025). Archer, who played for Rajasthan Royals in the 2025 IPL season, has not been a part of first-class cricket in four years due to injuries. The 30-year-old quick was initially not in the 12-player travelling squad for the County Championship match, raising doubts about his fitness but the ECB and Sussex later said the Barbadian-English cricketer will be travelling for the match at Chester-le-Street. If Archer is part of the playing XI and his body holds up in the red-ball fixture, he could be in contention for the second Test at Edgbaston from July 2 or the third at Lord's from July 10. Archer has only played white-ball cricket for England since 2021 because of recurring elbow and back injuries. He was initially due to make a red-ball comeback for the England Lions against India A but a thumb injury, suffered during the IPL, did not heal in time. England skipper Ben Stokes had said earlier this month that Archer, who has 42 wickets in 13 Tests, was keen to return to Test cricket. 'Randomly, a couple of times he would just send me a text... I was like, 'Let's just hold it there, alright. I know you're in a good spot right now but let's not just rush into it'. 'He's obviously had a horrific time with injuries but he's had some good amount of cricket, albeit in the white-ball formats,' Stokes had said. 'It's really exciting for England, but also more exciting for Jof (Archer) that he's in a position now where we're able to have a plan in place, and hopefully him get through something to actually be considered for selection for Test cricket.'

Bengal: Registration status of doctor under lens over ‘practice in UK'
Dr Rajatshubhra Banerjee, the doctor who was recently detained by the police in Bhabanipur during a protest led by West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar is now likely to face disciplinary scrutiny from the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC). Sources say the WBMC is now preparing to intensify its action against the doctor. Having already received two notices for 'absenteeism', Dr Banerjee is reportedly set to receive a third, summoning him before the council's penal committee. A key concern, according to WBMC officials, is his current registration status. Dr Banerjee is listed with the State Medical Council as holding an MBBS degree but allegedly did not inform the council that he now practices as an anaesthetist in the UK. Kaushik Biswas, a member of the West Bengal Medical Council, said, 'In the West Bengal Medical Council, there are more than 1 lakh registration numbers. It's not possible to check each one of them. We act whenever we find anything that needs checking. In this doctor's case, we have found discrepancies, so we have sent a notice for verification. There's nothing to make such a fuss about or feel nervous. Did he ever notify us that he would not practice from here and that his registration number should therefore be deregistered?' 'They are sending notices. Maybe I will get ten more notices. What is the meaning of this? I don't practice here, so what is the need for deregistration?' said Dr Banerjee.
