Kumulus Water Raises $3.5M to Redefine Clean Water Access with Off-Grid Tech in MENA and Europe
Kumulus Water, the WaterTech startup transforming air into clean drinking water, has successfully raised $3.5 million in seed funding. The round was led by Bpifrance via France 2030 SGPI and the Île-de-France Region, and included participation from other international regional and investors, such as Plus VC, MENA's most active VC, Khalys Venture, Flat6Labs, Europe's leading bottled water group Spadel, and several family offices and founders from Europe and North Africa. This strategic investment marks a major step in Kumulus' mission to provide decentralized, sustainable drinking water in regions facing water scarcity or lacking reliable infrastructure. Founded in 2021 by Iheb Triki and Mohamed Ali Abid, Kumulus designs and manufactures atmospheric water generators that extract safe drinking water from air humidity, without requiring any existing water or electricity infrastructure. The company's systems are currently in use in schools, hotels, and remote communities across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. 'We're deeply grateful to our existing and new investors for their trust and continued support,' said Iheb Triki, CEO and Co-founder of Kumulus Water. 'Their involvement is a strong vote of confidence in our technology and our vision. At Kumulus, we believe access to clean drinking water should not depend on existing infrastructure. With this new funding, Kumulus will launch the Kumulus Boks, a new line of industrial-grade, cutting-edge Atmospheric Water Generators (AWG), that provide clean drinking water directly from air humidity, while scaling operations in Tunisia, France, Spain and preparing market entry into Saudi Arabia.

DEWA Q1 revenue tops $1.62bn
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has reported a revenue of AED5.96 billion ($1.62 billion) for the first quarter of 2025. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) amounted to AED2.43 billion, with an operating profit of AED838 million and a net profit of AED496 million. The company also generated a record net cash from operations of AED3.85 billion resulting in closing cash and cash equivalents of AED8.17 billion, which is AED2.07 billion higher than the balance as at year-end 2024, said a Wam news agency report. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman and MD & CEO of DEWA, said: 'With consistent growth in demand for electricity, water and cooling services, our revenue grew by 2.83% to AED5.96 billion in the quarter and more notably our net cash flow from operations grew to AED3.85 billion, which is 17.86% higher than the amount in the same period of the previous year. Our financials reflect a healthy operating profit of AED838 million in the quarter, and an EBITDA of AED2.43 billion. We invested AED2.26 billion in infrastructure during the quarter, mainly related to our energy transition strategy. By 2030 we expect total installed generation capacity to reach 22 GW, out of which 7.5 GW, representing 34% of generation mix, will be sourced from clean energy sources, up from the original target of 25%. Overall, we are confident of continuing to deliver results exceeding our historical performance, which will translate into long term value creation for our shareholders,' added Al Tayer. In the first quarter of 2025, DEWA generated a record 10.50 TWh, representing a 2.83% increase over the same period in 2024. During this quarter clean power generated was 1.86 TWh, contributing 17.7% to the overall power generation. Simultaneously, desalinated water production in the quarter reached a record 35.61 BIG, showcasing a 4.56% increase. DEWA increased its customer base by an impressive 11,614 customer accounts during the quarter. In the last twelve months, ending with the first quarter of 2025, the total number of customer accounts increased by 57,339 , representing yearly growth of 3.7%. By the first quarter of 2025, the company's system installed generation capacity was 17,579 MW with 3,460 MW of this capacity coming from clean energy sources which represents 20% from the energy mix. By 2030, DEWA will add 240 MIGD of desalination capacity, using seawater reverse osmosis technology and total installed desalinated capacity will reach 735 MIGD by that time.

L&T emerges lowest bidder for 400kV Kuwait solar project
Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy has announced that Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has emerged as the lowest bidder for its Al Shaqaya Solar Power Generation Station 400 kV Overhead Transmission Line (OHTL) project. The leading Indian construction and engineering conglomerate had set a bid value of KD41.45 million ($135.2 million) for the project. An innovative development, the Shagaya Renewable Energy Project, is being developed by the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR). It aims to link the Al Shaqaya solar power station to the main substation in Al Wafra (Z) through the installation of a 400 kV OHTL. In the first phase, the project aims to generate approximately 3.2GW of electricity using renewable sources by 2030, it added.- TradeArabia News Service
