Passport fraud syndicate: 7 suspects to appear in Durban court

The Citizen5 days ago

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and law enforcement have arrested seven people allegedly involved in a passport fraud syndicate.
Berea Mail reports that the suspects, foreign nationals operating in Durban, will appear in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court today.
Initially, five people were arrested, but two more have been arrested since the weekend.
'The Serious Corruption Investigation component of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, based in Pretoria, has arrested an additional two suspects in the ongoing operation that began on Saturday in KZN, bringing the number to seven,' says Hawks' Colonel Katlego Mogale.
'The execution operation emanates from a complaint from the DHA relating to the issuance of fraudulent passports to undocumented foreign nationals. The allegations reported serious offences including corruption, fraud and contraventions of the Identification Act [68 of 1997] and Immigration Act [13 of 2002] that took place between February 2020 and July 2023, wherein a group of South African citizens allegedly facilitated the fraudulent acquisition of South African passports by foreign nationals at DHA offices in Durban, specifically the Commercial Street branch.
'These unlawful activities took place outside of regular business hours, including evenings, weekends and public holidays, when the DHA offices were officially closed.
'Preliminary investigations by the DHA confirmed that the criminal activities were indeed conducted [during] off-hours when local citizens [were] offered R300 to R1 000 in exchange for their co-operation, especially at DHA offices in Isipingo, Durban Central and Eshowe, resulting in a case being opened for investigation by Serious Corruption Investigation.'
The Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber reiterated: 'Our strategy of clamping down on criminals, while using technology to close loopholes they exploit, is how we will ultimately win the war against corruption.'
The Hawks are not ruling out the possibility of more suspects being arrested.

Confronting racism in our schools

It is alleged that an Indian learner told two Black students 'You stupid Black people are so predictable.' Such language is deeply offensive, dehumanising, and has no place in any learning environment. The latest incident of alleged racism at Bryandale Primary School in Bryanston is yet another painful reminder that South African schools still have a long way to go before genuine transformation and inclusion are achieved. It is alleged that an Indian learner told two Black students, 'You stupid Black people are so predictable.' Such language is deeply offensive, dehumanising, and has no place in any learning environment. This incident must be treated with the seriousness it demands, not as a 'playground misunderstanding,' but as a reflection of wider issues of racism and marginalisation that persist in our schools. While many public and private schools proudly promote values of diversity and transformation in their mission statements, these values must go beyond lip service. Transformation is not a passive hope; it requires active, ongoing engagement and institutional introspection. Schools play a critical role in redressing the deep inequalities and marginalisation embedded in our society. They must be proactive in creating safe and affirming environments for all children, not only through symbolic gestures but through deliberate action, anti-racism training, and clear accountability mechanisms.

Man shot dead after being robbed of backpack in Inanda, KZN

A man was shot dead in Inanda, KZN, on Saturday, 21 June 2025, after being robbed of his backpack. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), a motorist reported to the security company after witnessing two men attacking the victim with pipes. The motorist recalled that the suspects quickly fled the scene with the victim's backpack upon noticing him stop. The motorist said that he was unaware that the victim had been shot. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were summoned to the scene and found the man unresponsive. Paramedics declared him dead after he sustained a gunshot wound to his back that went through his chest. The suspects have not been apprehended yet. Two-night shift employees at a used spare business in Hazelmere, KZN, were attacked by six armed robbers and tied up for 11 hours on Friday, 20 June 2025. The suspects covered the victims' faces and tied them up at gunpoint. RUSA explained, 'Their hands & feet were bound with belts & shoelaces. Used vehicle bumpers & body parts were then stacked on top of the victims & they were found by dayshift staff eleven (11) hours later in the same position.' The suspects stole mag rims, power tools, car body parts and other items worth thousands of rands throughout the night. According to reports, it is alleged that the leader of the gang was a Mozambican National who was an employee at the same company. The foreign national had his face covered up when the robbery was in progress. He was found in possession of the items taken during the robbery and was arrested. Additional items were discovered in various locations at a home near the Hazelmere Dam. The suspect told RUSA that his accomplices had fled the scene and were on the run.
