Chenab bridge: How project team navigated through steep slopes on horses and mules

KATRA: To realise the vision of travelling from "Kashmir to Kanyakumari" by rail, the project team behind the construction of the Chenab bridge faced several challenges. Among them was how to reach the location surrounded by the steep slopes of the Himalayas.
The team had only one option -- horses and mules.
According to Afcons Infrastructure Limited, the top infrastructure company that constructed the bridge, one of the main and earliest challenges was access to the bridge location, to transport equipment and construction materials.
"Initially, mules and horses were used by the project team to reach the location. Slowly over a period, temporary roads were created and access was made available to the site," a spokesperson from the company said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the iconic Chenab Bridge, Anji Rail Bridge and Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link project and flagged off Vande Bharat trains, connecting Katra to Srinagar.
The spokesperson added that eventually, on the North side of the river bank, an 11-km road was constructed and a 12-km road on the South side.
Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Executive Vice Chairman, Afcons, said the Chenab Railway Bridge is more than just a marvel of engineering. "It is a symbol of India's resolve to conquer the most formidable challenges with ingenuity and courage," he told PTI.
The company used the world's tallest crossbar cable cranes and specialised heavy machinery as tools for this ambitious project.
"The ancient and steep slopes of the Himalayas were tamed using massive consolidation grouting, making them sturdy for the colossal arch foundations," the company said, highlighting challenges it faced.
"With the foundations set, the erection of the arch from both sides was planned by the cantilever construction technique. The first big moment of triumph came on April 5, 2021, when a single majestic arch approaching steadily from both banks met at the crown," it added.
"The viaduct construction was another unique challenge. There were multiple transition areas. Keeping this in mind, the launching sequence was meticulously planned in four sections," the spokesperson said.
Giridhar Rajagopalan, Deputy Managing Director, Afcons, told PTI that for the first time in Indian Railways, incremental launching was done on a transition curve and a longitudinal gradient, both occurring at the same location, for the deck launching of the viaduct portion of the Chenab Bridge.
S Paramasivan, Managing Director, Afcons, "For Afcons, it represents our unwavering commitment to nation-building and our ability to reimagine infrastructure in the toughest terrains. This bridge will inspire generations of engineers and stands as a tribute to the power of Indian engineering and teamwork."
For the first time in the Indian Railways' history, a laboratory accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration (NABL) was set up to ensure that quality was being monitored at every stage of the project.
Situated at a height of 359 metres above the river, the Chenab bridge is 35 metres higher than the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris and the world's highest railway bridge over the Chenab river.
After inaugurating the Chenab bridge, PM Modi walked on it holding the Tricolour high. He travelled in a rail engine coach to reach the spot.

Ahmedabad plane crash: DGCA asks Air India for details of inspections, audits since 2024, says report

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has sought flight operations inspectors to provide details of all inspections and audits conducted for Air India since 2024, sources said on Saturday. The details on the findings of the inspections and audits will have to be submitted by Sunday, they said, news agency PTI reported. The DGCA has sought these details for 2024 and 2025 (to date), in an email communication which came a day after the aviation safety regulator issued a show-cause notice to the airline for flight duty time limitations (FDTL) violations, the report citing sources said. The DGCA had also ordered removal of the airline's three senior officials from their respective roles for certain lapses. The data has been sought on planned and unplanned inspections, audit, cockpit/enroute, station facility, ramp and cabin inspection among others, as per the communication, the PTI report added. The directives come after an Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick carrying 242 passengers and crew members crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12, killing over 270 people onboard and on the ground. The DGCA ordered Tata Group-owned Air India to remove three senior officials for lapses in crew scheduling and rostering and issued a show-cause notice to the airline for violating FDTL norms, sources said on Saturday. In its order of June 20, the DGCA noted that the three officials, including a divisional vice-president, were involved in "serious and repeated lapses, including unauthorised and non-compliant crew pairings, violation of mandatory licensing and recency norms and systemic failures in scheduling protocol and oversight". The DGCA directed the airline to initiate proceedings against these three officials without delay, the PTI report said. Air India in a statement said it has acknowledged the regulator's directive and implemented the order. "In the interim, the company's chief operations officer will provide direct oversight to the Integrated Operations Control Centre (IOCC). "Air India is committed to ensuring that there is total adherence to safety protocols and standard practices," the airline said in a statement. ARMS (Air Route Management System) is the software platform used by the airline for various operational and management tasks, including crew rostering and flight planning, among others. A total of 247 victims of the horrific June 12 Ahmedabad plane crash have been identified through DNA tests so far and 232 bodies have been handed over to their families, officials said on Saturday. The authorities have asked the families of eight victims to submit the DNA samples of another relative as the previous ones failed to match, they said. According to the report, police said the matching of DNA samples confirmed that Ahmedabad-based filmmaker Mahesh Jirawala, who was reported missing following the crash, died in the catastrophe. His mortal remains were handed over to his family. Authorities are carrying out DNA tests to establish the identity of the victims as many bodies were charred beyond recognition as the aircraft burst into flames or damaged on impact.

Rupee recovers from two-month low level; settles 18 paise higher at 86.55 against US dollar

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic currency opened at 86.65 and traded in a narrow range of 86.55-86.67, before ending the session at its intra-day peak of 86.55 against the US dollar, registering a gain of 18 paise from previous closing level. A robust sentiment in domestic equity markets further supported the local unit, according to forex traders. Mumbai, Jun 20 (PTI) The rupee snapped its three-day losing streak and settled with a gain of 18 paise at 86.55 against the US dollar on Friday, buoyed by a massive inflow of foreign capital, retreating crude oil prices and a weakening greenback. The rupee had lost 30 paise to close at an over two-month low of 86.73 against the dollar on Thursday, logging a combined loss of 69 paise in the past three sessions. According to Maneesh Sharma, AVP – Commodities & Currencies, Anand Rathi Shares and Stock Brokers, the rupee gained on Friday but declined a little over 1 per cent this month so far, 'with a large portion of its decline occurring after Israel attacked targets in Iran last Friday'. Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst, HDFC Securities, attributed the rupee's resurgence to 'a revitalisation in the domestic stock markets and a subdued greenback, which receded following reports of President Donald Trump postponing a decision regarding an Iran strike'. Additionally, Parmar said, lower imported commodity prices lent additional buoyancy to the local rupee. 'In the near-term, the spot USD/INR pair faces resistance at 87.10 and finds support at 86.45. The overall bias for the USD/INR pair remains favourable,' he added. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.30 per cent lower at 98.60. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex surged 1,046.30 points to settle at 82,408.17, while Nifty soared 319.15 points to 25,112.40. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, declined 2.36 per cent to USD 76.99 per barrel in futures trade. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) purchased equities worth Rs 7,940.70 crore on a net basis on Friday, according to exchange data. The latest weekly data released by the Reserve Bank of India on Friday showed India's forex reserves rose USD 2.294 billion to USD 698.95 billion during the week ended June 13. However, government data showed the country's eight core sectors' growth slowed down to 0.7 per cent, lowest in nine months, in May 2025 against 6.9 per cent in the same month last year. In April, the growth in output of these key infrastructure sectors were recorded at 1 per cent. PTI TRB HVA This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
