NBIS vs. AMZN: Which AI-Infra Stock Seems a Better Pick at the Moment?

NBIS vs. AMZN: Which AI-Infra Stock Seems a Better Pick at the Moment?

Globe and Mail4 days ago

Nebius Group N.V. NBIS is an upcoming player in the AI-infrastructure market, while Amazon AMZN is an established tech behemoth. NBIS is a GPU-focused cloud platform, while Amazon dominates the AI cloud space through Amazon Web Services or AWS, the world's leading cloud provider, integrating AI capabilities at scale.
Per an IDC report, spending on AI infrastructure is expected to top $200 billion by 2028. This uptrend in spending benefits both Amazon and Nebius, but not equally. So, if an investor wants to make a smart buy in the AI infrastructure space, which stock stands out?
Let's break down how each company is performing and which one looks like the better investment right now.
Nebius: A Fast-Growing Pure-Play AI Infra Provider
Amsterdam-based Nebius is positioning itself as a specialized AI infrastructure company. NBIS also builds full-stack infrastructure for AI, like large-scale GPU clusters, cloud platforms, and tools and services for developers. Collaboration with Saturn Cloud and deeper NVIDIA integration boosts bodes well.
NBIS is doubling down on AI infrastructure with an ambitious $2 billion capital expenditure plan for 2025, up from its earlier guidance of $1.5 billion. NBIS stated that the increase was primarily due to some planned fourth-quarter spending shifting into the early first quarter. Nebius is focusing on building a global footprint, with capacity in the United States, Europe and the Middle East amid accelerating demand for its AI-infrastructure services. It added three new regions, including a strategic data center in Israel, in the last reported quarter. In June 2025, NBIS announced private placement of $1 billion in convertible notes to capitalize on the AI-infrastructure boom and drive-up revenue opportunities in 2026.
It recently announced the general availability of NVIDIA GB200 Grace Blackwell Superchip capacity for its customers in Europe. NBIS plans to build a data-center infrastructure pipeline that can offer scalability to more than 1 gigawatt ('GW') of capacity. With 1 GW of power, NBIS expects significantly higher revenues beyond its current guidance.
To gain a larger share of the AI cloud compute market, NBIS is focusing on technical enhancements that increase reliability and reduce downtime to boost customer retention. In the first quarter, Nebius significantly upgraded its AI cloud infrastructure through improvements to its Slurm-based cluster and its object storage capabilities. The upgraded storage system ensures that big data sets can be easily accessed and saved quickly during model training, directly lowering time-to-result for end users. NBIS successfully graduated multiple platform services like MLflow and JupyterLab Notebook from beta to general availability. Nebius expanded integrations with external AI platforms like Metaflow, D Stack and SkyPilot, enabling customers to migrate tools with nominal friction.
Nebius remains confident in achieving its full-year ARR guidance of $750 million to $1 billion. For 2025, the company also reaffirmed its overall revenue guidance of $500 million to $700 million. Nonetheless, the intense competition from behemoths remains a concern, along with profitability Management reaffirmed that adjusted EBITDA will be negative for the full year 2025. Though it added that adjusted EBITDA will turn positive at 'some point in the second half of 2025.'
Amazon: Dominant Force With Its AWS Platform
While NBIS is an early-stage player, Amazon is one of the dominant names in the AI cloud infrastructure space with its AWS platform. AWS revenues surged 17% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2025, with an annualized revenue run rate pegged at $117 billion. AWS backlog reached $189 billion with a 4.1-year weighted average life, offering forward revenue visibility.
In the last reported quarter, AWS signed new agreements with major companies, including Ericsson, Adobe, Uber Technologies, Nasdaq, Fujitsu and many others. Amazon highlighted that more than 85% of global IT spending is still on-premises, suggesting immense growth potential for AWS.
More significantly, Amazon's AI business segment now operates at a multi-billion-dollar annual revenue run rate with triple-digit percentage growth year over year. Amazon's strategy focuses on custom silicon development, particularly its Trainium 2 chips, which offer 30-40% better price performance compared to GPU-based instances. The company has also expanded its AI model offerings through Amazon Bedrock and introduced services like Amazon Nova foundation models. AMZN has added the latest foundation models in Amazon Bedrock, including Anthropic's Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Meta's Llama 4 family of models, DeepSeek's R1 and Mistral AI's Pixtral Large.
AMZN is ramping up investment to boost its AI market share. It recently announced it plans to invest up to $20 billion in Pennsylvania to expand its data center infrastructure for AI and cloud computing. Before that, it allocated $10 billion in investments to expand cloud computing infrastructure in North Carolina.
However, capacity constraints pose a challenge. Amazon has indicated that AI demand currently outstrips available capacity, suggesting the company could drive higher revenues with additional infrastructure. The intense competition from Microsoft's Azure and Google Cloud is concerning. Heavy capex spend could strain margins if AI returns do not materialize.

‘Life is full of unexpected surprises': People trying to call Iran meet mysterious voice message

People stand on a rooftop amid billowing smoke following an overnight Israeli strike in Tehran, Iran's capital, on June 17. (Atta Kenare/AFP/Getty Images via CNN Newsource) People trying to call friends and loved ones inside Iran have instead been met with strange, pre-recorded voice messages, which some experts believe may be part of the regime's wider internet blackout. In a recording of a telephone call heard by CNN, a person outside of Iran hoping to hear their friend's voice on the other line, was instead met with a robotic voice. 'Hello, and thank you for taking the time to listen,' the voice says. 'Life is full of unexpected surprises,' it continues, 'and these surprises can sometimes bring joy while, at other times, they challenge us. 'The key is to discover the strength within us to overcome these challenges.' The unsettling message, which lasts nearly 90 seconds, then goes on to recommend the listener close their eyes and imagine themself in a place that brings them 'peace and happiness.' While different variations have been reported, this version appears to have been the one most commonly heard by people outside Iran placing calls to mobile phones inside the country on Wednesday and Thursday. No similar message was reported when calling landlines. The messages were widely heard after Iran imposed nationwide temporary restrictions on internet access on Wednesday, citing security concerns. This meant WhatsApp was down, so people abroad began calling their friends and family in Iran directly, rather than via the app. The message is reportedly not heard if the call is made through an app. The initial assumption for many Iranians was that the messages were the result of an Israeli cyberattack. Others see the Iranian authorities as being behind them. Alp Toker, the founder and director of NetBlocks, a non-governmental organization that monitors internet governance, believes the messages are an attempt by the Iranian government to limit telecommunications, as part of the wider internet censorship measures. 'The point is, when the internet is cut, the phones need to go somewhere, and that will go to the fallback message on the device,' he told CNN. Toker added it was a phenomenon NetBlocks had seen in different places around the world when internet access was cut. 'Sometimes it will have an advert for summer vacations and sometimes it will have some other nonsense,' he said. According to Toker, the messages are text-to-speech generated. He believes they appear to have been set up rapidly. 'It's in the format of a normal gateway answering message of the type you might get from a national gateway when a phone doesn't answer,' he said. 'It seems that they've gone with the settings, and there's a little box where you can put in the settings and they've put something in there, pre-AI generated.' Meanwhile, a U.K.-based telecommunications expert who listened to a recording of the most commonly heard message told CNN that 'the call appears to be hijacked after the second ring, which is highly unusual and deeply concerning. This suggests interference at the network level – well before a proper connection is established.' The expert asked not to be named for safety reasons. Neither Israel nor Iran has made a public statement on the recorded phone messages. Access to international internet services had been partially restored in parts of Iran on Saturday 'after approximately 62 hours of severe disruption,' NetBlocks said. 'While some regions have seen improvements, overall connectivity remains below ordinary levels, continuing to hinder people's ability to communicate freely and access independent information,' it added. The semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that international internet services would resume by 8 p.m. local time Saturday, citing the communications minister. However, Tasnim later reported that this was not the case, citing the same minister. According to the communications ministry, Iranians abroad can now contact their families inside Iran through domestic messaging apps. The Iranian government has frequently restricted internet access in the country. During nationwide protests in 2022, authorities implemented multiple internet shutdowns in an effort to stifle dissent. By Sophie Tanno.

Circle Stock (CRCL) Soars after Senate Passes Stablecoin Bill

Shares of Circle (CRCL) are surging again on Friday after the U.S. Senate approved the GENIUS Act, which is a bill that is designed to regulate stablecoins. The stock is up 20% at the time of writing, following a 33% jump on Wednesday after the bill passed (U.S. markets were closed Thursday for the Juneteenth holiday). As a result, Circle's shares are up more than 60% for the week and have skyrocketed over 500% since going public on June 5. That's because Coinbase earns half the interest revenue from Circle's USDC stablecoin reserves, and all the interest on USDC held directly on its own platform. However, it is worth noting that the GENIUS Act still needs approval from the House of Representatives. Still, investors are hopeful. Indeed, stablecoins, which are digital tokens tied to the U.S. dollar, are attracting more attention from banks and tech companies as crypto regulations shift under the Trump administration. Big names like Amazon (AMZN), Walmart (WMT), Apple (AAPL), Uber (UBER), and Airbnb (ABNB) are reportedly exploring how to use or create their own stablecoins. The GENIUS Act aims to make payments faster, more transparent, and safer, while also increasing demand for U.S. dollars and government debt. It includes rules to protect consumers, set collateral standards, and provide clear oversight. As a result, Galaxy Digital's Alex Thorn says the bill could pave the way for traditional finance to start using public blockchains, which would increase the adoption of bitcoin, crypto, and decentralized finance. Is CRCL Stock a Buy? Using TipRanks' technical analysis tool, the indicators seem to point to a positive outlook for CRCL stock, thanks to two Bullish indicators and no Neutral or Bearish indicators. However, it is worth noting that since the company recently went public, there is not enough data to fully analyze its technical patterns.

The UK Is Investigating Amazon (AMZN) for Not Paying Its Suppliers on Time

E-commerce giant Amazon (AMZN) is being investigated by the UK's grocery regulator, the Groceries Code Adjudicator (GCA), for not paying its suppliers on time. This would violate Article 5 of the UK's Groceries Supply Code of Practice, which says that retailers must pay suppliers 'within a reasonable time' after receiving their invoice. If Amazon is found to have breached the code, it could face a fine of up to 1% of its annual grocery turnover in the UK. Confident Investing Starts Here: Easily unpack a company's performance with TipRanks' new KPI Data for smart investment decisions Receive undervalued, market resilient stocks right to your inbox with TipRanks' Smart Value Newsletter The GCA said that it had been monitoring Amazon's actions after warning the company last year to fix its practices. After reviewing more evidence, the regulator decided to launch a formal investigation focused specifically on Amazon's compliance with the payment timing rule. The GCA is responsible for making sure large grocery retailers treat their suppliers fairly, and this move suggests Amazon hasn't done enough to address previous concerns. While Amazon's grocery operations are smaller in the UK than in other markets, they are still significant. Estimates suggest that Amazon has between 1.6% and 3% of the UK grocery market, compared to Tesco's 29%. Amazon doesn't break out UK grocery sales in its earnings reports, but the Competition and Markets Authority requires companies with over £1 billion in UK grocery turnover to follow the Groceries Code, which implies that Amazon exceeds that threshold. Following news of the investigation, Amazon's stock opened lower on Friday and continued to trade in the red for a third straight session. What Is the Price Target for AMZN Stock? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Strong Buy consensus rating on Amazon stock based on 46 Buys and one Hold assigned in the past three months. Furthermore, the average AMZN stock price target of $241.64 implies 15% upside potential from current levels. See more AMZN analyst ratings
