The arrest of two men, who allegedly harboured the terrorists involved in the Pahalgam terror attack, is a significant breakthrough in the investigation.
The two brothers, identified as Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar from Pahalgam's Batkote and Bashir Ahmad Jothar from Hill Park, possess crucial information that could establish important linkages, top sources told News18.
According to the sources, Parvaiz and Bashir have revealed the identities of the three terrorists, who allegedly gunned down 26 tourists in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22. Additionally, they know about the whereabouts of the terrorists after the attack.
The sources said these two individuals provided shelter and food to the attackers, 3 km from the attack site in Baisaran valley. They were fully aware that they were terrorists and even served them tea, they said.
They said it is, however, unclear if the brothers knew about the attack plans in advance. The terrorists, including the well-trained key assailant Suleman, were identified by the victims' families, though the other two belong to new groups not in the existing database, they added.
The NIA has said the accused have also confirmed that the terrorists were Pakistani nationals affiliated to the proscribed terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). They have been booked under Section 19 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

The arrest of two Kashmiri locals for allegedly harbouring terrorists who carried out the April 22 Pahalgam attack has led the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to conclude that all three attackers were from Pakistan. According to the agency, the terrorists visited the homes of Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar from Batkote, Pahalgam, and Bashir Ahmad Jothar from Hill Park, Pahalgam, and took food from them. 'During questioning, they have disclosed the identities of the three armed terrorists involved in the attack, and have also confirmed that they were Pakistani nationals affiliated to the proscribed terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba,' a NIA spokesperson said. The breakthrough is a departure from what was previously believed about the identities of the attackers. Two days after the April 22 Pahalgam attack, the Jammu and Kashmir police had released three sketches – Pakistan nationals Hashim Musa and Ali Bhai alias Talha, and Kashmir local Adil Hussain Thoker. NIA sources now say the three men in the sketches are not the Pahalgam attackers. Sources said one of the attackers is believed to be Suleiman Shah, who was involved in the killing of seven employees of a firm constructing the Z-Morh tunnel on the Srinagar-Sonamarg highway on October 20 last year. His co-accused from the attack, Junaid Ramzan Bhat, was killed on December 4 in a gunfight with the J&K police. From his phone, police had recovered a photo of Junaid along with three other militants. This photo went viral after the April 22 Pahalgam attack and, sources said, was used by the J&K as the basis for the sketches. During the investigation, the central agencies and the NIA showed different pictures recovered from Junaid's phone to the two arrested locals, who recognised the men who had visited them two days before the Pahalgam attack. 'The fresh pictures were also shown to several witnesses, and they too confirmed their presence at the crime scene. All three are Pakistani nationals, including the Z-Morh terror accused Suleman Shah,' said a source. 'Central agencies and the NIA are revisiting past cases and trying to tally ballistic reports so a strong case can be built against these attackers,' the source said. Investigators are also looking into whether Suleman was involved in the killing of three Army personnel in South Kashmir's Kulgam district in August 2023, and in another attack in Jammu's Poonch district in May last year, wherein an Air Force personnel was killed and four others injured. Before the NIA arrested the two locals for allegedly sheltering the attackers, the agency had questioned more than 200 people, including pony operators, shopkeepers and photographers. 'Parvaiz had a common friend with a pony operator, and their wives shared details of the visitor at their house,' said a source. The NIA believes the three attackers came to their homes late evening on April 20 and asked them to pack food. Before leaving, they gave them some money and threatened them not to tell anyone. 'As per the probe, Parvaiz and Bashir knowingly harboured the three armed terrorists at a seasonal dhok (hut) at Hill Park before the attack,' the spokesperson said, 'The two men had provided food, shelter and logistical support to the terrorists.' The two have been arrested under section 19 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

A case has been registered at Nowshera police station under relevant sections of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the official said. (File) Vikas Kumar Sharma, a resident of Thill Hakima village of Nowshera sector, was travelling in his private car from Lamberi to Bagnoti when he was intercepted by a police party on Saturday evening, the official said. Upon noticing the police presence, he attempted to flee but was apprehended by the personnel and his search led to the recovery of the narcotic substance, he said. A case has been registered at Nowshera police station under relevant sections of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the official said. The accused has a history of involvement in criminal cases as three FIRs were registered against him between 2006 and 2020, police said. Sharma was first elected as sarpanch in November 2018 and resigned from the post after winning BDC elections in September 2019. He remained as BDC chairman for eight months from September 2019 before being removed from the position through a no-confidence motion in April 2020, the official said. He said police have started an investigation to trace the source of the contraband and identify any possible links to a broader drug trafficking network.

Pahalgam attackers still at large, forces on high alert ahead of Amarnath Yatra
NEW DELHI: With the Pahalgam terror suspects still absconding, intelligence agencies have issued a fresh alert warning of a possible attack during the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. According to sources, actionable inputs have been shared with ground troops and local police units to ensure foolproof security arrangements for the annual pilgrimage. In their report to the government, intelligence agencies have named The Resistance Front (TRF) a proxy outfit of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) as the group responsible for the recent Pahalgam attack and indicated that it may be planning another strike during the Yatra. Senior officials in charge of the Amarnath Yatra security grid confirmed that forces have been 'strategically deployed along the route to ensure rapid response capabilities across all key points.' However, concern remains high as the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack are still at large. Security officials suspect the militants could be hiding in the Pir Panjal jungle region and may be planning further attacks.
