Manager of health-based company loses RM1.3m to non-existent investment syndicate

GEORGE TOWN: The manager of a health-based company recently lost RM1.3 million after being deceived by a non-existent online investment syndicate.
Penang Police Chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the Commercial Crime Investigation Department of the Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) District Police Headquarters (IPD) received a report from the victim, a 46-year-old local man, last Monday, informing them that he had been deceived by the syndicate.
'Last April, the victim saw an investment advertisement based on stock trading concepts through the Instagram application and contacted a woman suspected to be one of the syndicate members via the WhatsApp application.
'The syndicate promised high returns in a short period if he joined the stock investment, and the victim downloaded the TPG PRO application after being interested in joining the investment,' he said in a statement today.
Hamzah said the man made 21 money transfer transactions totaling RM1.3 million to four different company accounts between April 27 and May 29 for the purpose of the investment.
He said the victim realized he had been cheated when he failed to withdraw profits from the investment; instead, he was asked to make additional capital contributions if he wanted to withdraw the profits.
'Further investigation is underway, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating,' he said.

"According to the man, he had seen a stock investment advertisement promising high returns on Facebook in December and the victim then contacted the female suspect via the WhatsApp application. "The investment offered various packages with promises of lucrative returns and the victim was interested in participating, before downloading the stock investment application and on Dec 30 made the first transfer of RM9,999 and earning a profit of RM18,400," he said in a statement today. He said that following that his confidence grew in the investment, the victim then made 35 money transfers between Feb 17 and April 24 into seven bank accounts belonging to different companies involving a total of RM1,495,176. Hamzah said the man only realised he had been a victim of fraud after failing to withdraw profits on the investment application and was even asked to make an additional payment. For the second case, he said a 73-year-old elderly man who is a retired accountant at a factory had filed a police report at north-east police headquarters yesterday after also falling victim to an online investment scam involving a loss of RM855,001. "According to the victim, he saw an investment advertisement for cryptocurrency investments that offered high profits in a short period of time on Facebook in March and the elderly person clicked on the advertisement link before contacting the female suspect via the WhatsApp application," he said. Hamzah said the victim joined and downloaded the investment application before making 14 transactions to five bank accounts belonging to different companies from April 15 to June 11, but did not receive any profits.

Tok Singa, 3 other traditional healers jailed for assault causing lecturer's blindness

KOTA BARU: Four traditional medicine practitioners were sentenced to four years in jail by the Sessions Court here today for assaulting a lecturer and causing permanent blindness in his left eye in August 2021. Judge Mohd Zul Zaqikudin Zulkifli handed down the sentence to all four accused, including two known by their aliases, Wea Selamos, whose real name is Mohd Shamsul Izwan Midin, 37, and Tok Singa, whose real name is Muhammad Firdaus Mohd Adnan, 37. The other two accused are Idrees Ishak, 46, and Mohd Eric Mohd Ramli, 39. In his judgment, Mohd Zul Zaqikudin said the defence presented by all four was merely a denial. "As such, all the accused are found guilty and sentenced to three years' imprisonment, effective today," he said. According to the charge, they were accused of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to the victim, Ahmad Shahrill 'Ariff Zainol, 43, which led to permanent blindness in his left eye. The offence took place at a guesthouse on Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra here at about 4am on Aug 5, 2021. All the accused were charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of seven years and a possible fine upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli prosecuted while all four accused were represented by Mohd Azrul Hasyimi Mohamad. Earlier, Mohd Azrul Hasyimi applied for a stay of execution to file an appeal on behalf of his clients. The court allowed the application and increased the bail from RM3,000 to RM5,000 for each accused.

Sibu police launch manhunt after rape suspect escapes custody

Buni SIBU (June 22): A 25-year-old Indonesian national remanded in connection with a rape case escaped from Sibu Central police station here at around 4pm yesterday. Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili, in a statement, said the suspect, identified as Buni, was still wearing handcuffs and purple lock-up attire at the time of his escape.
