Exclusive: Inside high-speed driving training new GA officers are getting to improve safety

Starting this year, new law enforcement officers in Georgia are getting high-speed driving training aimed at making our roads safer.
Channel 2's Michael Seiden got an exclusive look at the training that could lead to fewer deaths, injuries, and crashes.
If you travel about an hour south of downtown Atlanta, you will find hundreds of recruits who are training for some of the most dangerous scenarios that law enforcement can face – including high speeds on the interstate.
'The criminals out here are driving Camaros, Mustangs, Corvettes, Hellcats – 500, and 600, and 800 horsepower cars,' said Brian Stokes, an instructor at Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth.
Challenges are also found on congested suburban streets.
'They can be people, they can be mailboxes, they can be other vehicles,' said Kevin Angell, another instructor at GPSTC.
Instructors are now teaching new officers how to drive safely in any environment.
'We want to prevent or help lower the incidents of officers being injured in the line of a vehicle crash. That's a very high statistic across the country. And also, the citizens that are involved in those as well,' said Ara Baronian, Director of Basic Training at GPSTC.
He said since the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council voted last year to increase the minimum training requirements to become a certified police officer, recruits are now required to log at least 56 hours of drive time.

In April, Seiden got the opportunity to play recruit for the day.
The training starts with the basics: how to navigate the roads when you are dealing with obstacles.
Seiden started on the cones course, with each cone representing a person, mailbox or even another car.
'They've got two minutes and 40 seconds to move their way through this course and really the skills that it's focused on is turning left, turning right, braking, backing up, being able to accelerate and being able to decelerate safely,' Angell said.
But it didn't take long before Seiden got into some serious trouble.
'Once we get around them. Oops, I almost hit them. I gotta go back up. I feel I'm 16 again. Yeah, it's pressure,' Seiden said.
Ultimately, Seiden failed the test.
'If this were a real-life situation, I'd be in a lot of trouble right now,' Seiden said.
Channel 2 Action News also took a ride on the urban track where recruits are forced to make split-second decisions in real-life scenarios.
'What we wanted to add to that was the additional variables, like manipulating a high-priority call through traffic, right through a city street,' Baronian said.
Seiden also rode along for a couple of laps around the high-speed course.
'Wow! Wow! We're going over 100 miles per hour right now,' Seiden said.
This is a vital part of the training because it teaches the recruits how to maintain control of their cars as they fly around curves.
On this day, we also found several recruits practicing their pit maneuvers, a law enforcement tactic that is used to force a fleeing car to stop.
The state is only 16 weeks into this new training, but so far, the feedback is positive.
In fact, instructors believe that these tactics are going to make Georgia roads much safer.
'We're not rushing to any conclusions yet, but so far, we've had a lot of success,' Baronian said.
Seiden asked them how they are going to measure success and they told him that they don't track outside statistics, but they stay in constant communication with local, state, and federal partners and use it to tweak their training programs.

The so-called "Fox body" Ford Mustangs, the third-generation cars built from 1979 through 1993, are enjoying a sort of nostalgia-driven renaissance in interest these days. Unsurprisingly, this is because those who were young when the Fox bodies were on sale are now older, maybe with some extra cash and spare garage space to start collecting these Mustangs off-lawn, so to speak. How "in" are Fox bodies these days? Ford is even getting in on the action with a new FX package that celebrates the Mustang defined by the 1980s. This isn't the first time Ford has dipped into Fox-body lore lately, either — when the current Mustang arrived for 2024, its digital gauge cluster even included a setting that recreates the Fox body's old-school analog gauge pack. The FX package takes the nostalgia a lot further, of course, with white badges, white wheels, retro "Mustang" lettering and more. It's available only on the Mustang GT Premium trim level, on both the coupe and convertible, and with or without the Performance package. Favorite Ford classics: These 10 old Ford Mustangs are hugely underappreciated It ain't real if it ain't teal Ford doesn't choose just any white paint for the FX package; since all things Mustang must treat time like a flat circle, everything you see painted white is, specifically, painted Oxford White, a hue that was available on the original Mustang. It's used for the "GT" badges, wheels, retro "Mustang" sticker on the rear glass (coupe only), and the "nostrils" in the grille on Performance package variants. There are two wheel designs and both evoke classic Fox body designs, with the version you see here adopting a slick turbofan style. The other version — for non-Performance-pack cars — is a classic five-spoke. Both wear color-matched center caps bearing "Mustang GT" lettering in what Ford says is a new font (that happens to look like an old, Fox-body font, but who's keeping close track?). In case you missed it: The 1969 Ford Mustang Boss legacy lives on Oh, and speaking of paint, the FX package introduces a new-for-2026 paint color (which also will be available on other '26 Mustangs): Adriatic Blue Metallic. Put simply, it's a rad teal color (pictured here) — what could be more Fox-body-era than that? Another new paint color this year is Orange Fury Metallic. It has no specific history linked to the Fox body, it's just worth mentioning since it hasn't been offered on the Mustang since 2019. Pivotal digital Setting aside how blown peoples' minds would have been if, in the 1980s, their Fox body Mustangs came with the sort of digitized dashboard that today's Mustang gets (FX package included), Ford has put some effort into backdating the FX's interior. Plaid-like seat inserts do a lot of the heavy lifting here, but remember, there's always that Fox body gauge cluster option. Less obvious is the Dark Alley interior trim borrowed from the Mustang Dark Horse model, as well as subtle blue stitching and a "Mustang GT" badge on the passenger-side dash. Ford hasn't outlined the FX package's price yet, but mentions that order books for the 2026 Mustang lineup overall open in later in June 2025. We'll surely find out then how much this retro FX package (and the Mustang overall) costs. ‘No Kings' protests expected to draw thousands across north Georgia on Saturday

Thousands of people are expected to participate in protests across north Georgia on Saturday. Organizers are planning nearly two dozen protests all across metro Atlanta and north Georgia as part of the nationwide 'No Kings' demonstrations against President Donald Trump and his policies. More than 5,000 people are expected to crowd into Liberty Plaza at the Georgia State Capitol as part of the demonstration. 'Because we have gotten the other permits and we're working with Atlanta police as well as Capitol police, we do want to respect and show that First Amendment rights look different to everyone,' Laura Judge of Indivisible North Metro Atlanta said. State Attorney General Chris Carr warns that if outside agitators come in and spark violence, his office will prosecute under the state's domestic terrorism statute. 'I will defend your right to peacefully protest, but again, if you are going to go after, light buildings on fire, or shoot police officers, or loot buildings, nope, we're not going to stand for it,' Carr said. Officer shot 6 times by YSL gang members says he kept thinking ‘I'm not dying out here'

For the first time, an Atlanta police officer is talking with Channel 2 Action News about an attack where a gunman shot him six times. YSL criminal street gang member Christian Eppinger shot Officer David Rodgers six times in 2022 as he tried to arrest Eppinger for armed robbery. Rogers spoke one-on-one with Channel 2 investigative reporter Mark Winne on Friday and walked him through the harrowing incident. 'I encountered Mr. Eppinger, gave him commands to get on the ground, let him know that he had paper. He failed to comply. I had issues getting my Taser, and at that point, he flanked me and I was shot,' Rogers said. Earlier this week, we obtained video of Eppinger firing at Rodgers. 'While I didn't know I was shot six times, I heard that sound quite a few times. Poom, poom, poom,' Rodgers said. 'You kind of feel the heat from the blood flowing out of you, and I went to go access my firearm and couldn't, and I remember turning towards him and all I could see was the white pants he had on and the muzzle of that Glock.' Rogers said that he thanks God for surviving the attack. 'I kind of talk to God for a little bit. Just kind of remember saying to myself, 'I'm not dying out here,'' Rogers said. 'I took a graze across the back of the head that cracked my skull. I think they told me I took four to the back of the shoulder, shattered my humerus. And then one to the back of my thigh, right around my hamstring.' Rodgers says he used to work for Georgia Power but was laid off. He told Winne that it was the power of God that led him to his calling: policework. Love with the people,' Rodgers said. He said it's a miracle that he's even still alive today. 'I'm definitely a walking miracle. No doubt about it. Yeah, God gave me the gift of life in that situation, or more life. He definitely placed some angels around me throughout recovery. And he gave me these special gifts of peace. I've had peace,' Rodgers said. Rodgers credits Will Johnson, now a sergeant, who, Eppinger also shot at but didn't hit, for fast action applying a tourniquet at the scene and more. He said he got to Grady Memorial Hospital in the back of an undercover car led by a blue light escort. Rodgers said he was in the courtroom on Monday when Eppinger was sentenced for the attempted murder of Rodgers and Johnson, and a host of other crimes, to 40 years in prison and 25 years' probation. The prison time will run at the same time as a 45-year sentence from a probation revocation,who Eppinger was already serving. 'Outside of the bigger question of where's the justice, I think we have to pay particular attention to how we treat our protectors,' Rodgers said. Rodgers told Winne that more than he was angry for himself, he was upset for Johnson and other officers. 'It was maybe 30 to 40 officers within that courtroom that day. After the sentence came down, and you just look at the reactions on everyone's face, there was a lot of sadness. There's a lot a dejection. You saw tears, but you saw defeat,' Rodgers said. The judge overseeing the case told Winne that in crafting Eppinger's sentence in the YSL case, she considered the lengthy probation revocation Eppinger was already serving, was essentially already a punishment for the same crimes for which she sentenced him Monday. 'I want every member of the Atlanta Police Department to know this: I see your bravery. And I recognize it, and so do the citizens of this city,' Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said. 'I would have rather they just put in a stipulation that he got a PhD while he had to sit down, just so he could experience something else other than what he's grew up in,' Rodgers said. Rodgers said the most important part of his entire story is thankfulness. He says he is grateful to God and for the people He put around him to be strong when he couldn't be. He said they include his family, Mayor Andre Dickens, former APD officer Lois Palzolo, Sgt. Will Johnson, Officer Stacy Booker, Sgt. Jamir Denson, former APD officer Thomas Crowder, Officer Claudia Rivers, Maj. Janice Sturdivant, Dr. Stephanie Thomas, Officer Jaz Rivera, Inv. Leon Delain, Lt. David Holleman, Lt. Tim Henninger, Chris Wigginton and Billy Shoemaker of the Georgia Public Safety Training Center, Douglasville Police Sgt. Matt Underwood and his charity Hooked On Blue, Chad Wallace of Team Blue Line, Keegan Merritt from a state peer support program and local school teacher Ashley Guthrie. He says their support came in many forms—from daily phone calls to getting him out of the house before he could return to duty and much more. And he said he wants to thank countless Atlanta citizens for their prayers and well wishes.,
