18 school vans seized in Negri Sembilan crackdown

SEREMBAN: Eighteen school vans were seized by the Negri Sembilan Road Transport Department (RTD) during a state-wide crackdown targeting serious breaches that could endanger the safety of students.
The operation, known as Ops Khas Van Haram, uncovered various infringements, including vehicles operating without permits, expired motor vehicle licences, and lapses in insurance and roadworthiness certificates.
The crackdown was carried out yesterday in response to public complaints and intelligence reports.
Negri Sembilan RTD director Hanif Yusabra Yusuf said the operation, which ran from 5am to 3pm, uncovered 26 vans operating without valid permits.
"This operation was launched in response to public complaints and intelligence regarding a rise in the use of private vans for illegal commercial purposes," he said in a statement.
"This includes transporting school pupils. Such activities not only violate the law but also pose serious safety risks to passengers," he added.
Enforcement teams inspected 57 vehicles suspected of operating illegally across Seremban, Rembau, Kuala Pilah and Jempol.
"A total of 22 summons notices were issued for various infractions. More significantly, 18 vans were seized under provisions of the Road Transport Act 1987 for further investigation," Hanif said.
He added that the most common breach was the misuse of motor vehicle licences, with 26 cases recorded.
Other violations included 10 cases involving expired motor vehicle licences and eight cases where vehicles were operating without valid insurance.
Hanif said six vans were found with expired Puspakom inspection certificates, casting serious doubt on the roadworthiness of the vehicles.
"In terms of driver qualification, we also detected four cases of individuals driving without a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licence, and one case involving an expired PSV licence," he said.

Accident claims life of 14-year-old pillion rider in Ulu Tiram

JOHOR BARU: A 14-year-old motorcycle pillion rider was killed in an accident with a lorry at Ulu Tiram here. Seri Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said two 14-year-old students, one rider and one pillion rider, were travelling on the motorcycle along Batu 16, Jalan Sungai Tiram, Ulu Tiram when the accident occurred at around 10.44am on Friday (June 20). ACP Mohd Sohaimi added that the motorcyclist sustained leg injuries and was rushed to Hospital Sultan Ismail for medical treatment. He said the 35-year-old lorry driver was detained to assist in investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. He also urged the public to obey traffic laws and exercise caution, especially during peak hours and nighttime driving, to prevent similar tragedies. 'Op Mabuk' nets intoxicated driver and 25 traffic summonses

BATU PAHAT: A 20-year-old man was arrested for drink-driving during a traffic enforcement operation targeting intoxicated motorists across the district, yesterday. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the operation, codenamed 'Op Mabuk', kicked off at 11pm yesterday until 5am the following morning, covering various areas and included a roadblock at KM3 Jalan Kluang–Batu Pahat. "The suspect was detained under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 after a breathalyser test showed he had exceeded the legal alcohol limit," he said. The man was held overnight and is expected to be released on bail today pending further investigation, while his vehicle was seized. He may face charges for driving under the influence of alcohol, Shahrulanuar told the New Straits Times when contacted today. He warned motorists against drink-driving, adding that offenders face stiff penalties including a maximum fine of RM30,000, a two-year prison term, and a mandatory two-year licence suspension. "Driving under the influence endangers not only yourself but everyone else on the road. Don't take that risk," he said. A total of 25 summonses were issued during the six-hour operation for various traffic offences. These included three motorists for running red lights, misuse of high beams (4), ignoring traffic signals (2), and registration plate violations (6). Three motorcyclists were issued with summonses for missing side mirrors, two for expired road tax and one was riding without a valid licence. He added that four 4x4 drivers were slapped with summonses for driving with an expired road tax, had number plate violations and had no driving licence.

RTD to audit 500 bus, lorry operators starting Monday

BUTTERWORTH: The Road Transport Department (RTD) will audit 500 public service vehicle (PSV) and goods commercial vehicle operators deemed high-risk under its special enforcement strategy, "RTD Inspection and Safety Audit" (JISA), starting Monday. RTD director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the identified high-risk operators include 300 lorries, 100 tour buses and 100 express buses. He said operators with outstanding summonses were identified through lists compiled by the RTD and the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad). He said the main focus of the special operation is to assess companies' compliance with safety aspects, vehicle maintenance, driver management, and records under the Road Transport Act 1987 and related regulations. "The enforcement of the JISA special operation involves inspection reports and safety audits focusing on compliance with the Industry Code of Practice (ICOP) concerning safety in the transport industry. "It also allows for the checking and resolution of outstanding summonses by vehicle owners and drivers, as well as compliance with vehicle technical specifications," he told reporters after the MyLesen B2 Driving Licence handover ceremony here today. Aedy Fadly said the audit was initiated following the bus crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on June 9, along with several other recent accidents involving heavy vehicles. He said RTD would take strict action against any operators found violating regulations or neglecting safety, including issuing offence notices, suspending or revoking vocational driving licences (PSV/GDL), or operator licences. "This measure is part of RTD's ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and further strengthen the integrity of the national transport system," he added.
