NSW called out over 'arrogant' pre-Origin move as Billy Slater stunt resurfaces

Yahoo4 days ago

Laurie Daley and NSW have been labelled 'arrogant' for keeping Billy Slater and Queensland waiting at the pre-game press conference in Perth, while Phil Gould has hit out at the Maroons for their axing of Daly Cherry-Evans. Many have suggested the build-up to State of Origin Game 2 has been rather mild with Slater and the Queensland side largely staying out of the media and throwing very few barbs after their 18-6 defeat at Suncorp.
NSW have largely stayed out of the media as well with Spencer Leniu and Latrell Mitchell continuing their self-imposed media bans. Although only a day out from Game 2, the Blues certainly ruffled some feathers in the Queensland section following their tardiness to a media opportunity.
Coach Daley, captain Isaah Yeo and Nathan Cleary kept Billy Slater and new Queensland captain Cameron Munster waiting on their arrival fo the press conference on Tuesday ahead of Game 2 in Perth. Reporter Peter Badel, from The Courier Mail, labelled the move from NSW as 'arrogant' as Slater and co were made to wait in front of the media.
The NSW contingent did arrive for the press conference, but the move wasn't well received from those north of the border. However, it could have been in response to Slater making Michael Maguire and NSW wait last year with the stunt backfiring in Melbourne.

Ahead of Game 2 last year, with Queensland winning Game 1, Maguire took a little swipe at Slater for not turning up on time in a similar situation. And it appears the roles have been reversed a year later with Queensland waiting on the winning team this time around. Although Daley will be hoping he can do one better than Slater and follow through with the victory in Game 2.
Last year, leading journalist Dean Ritchie revealed the Blues were privately 'filthy' with Queensland after their stunt. 'The Blues were privately a little bit miffed though, it was for 12.30pm, they were ready to go at twenty past 12 and Queensland lobbed in at twenty to one,' he said on the Sky Sport Radio.
'And then even when Billy got there, Madge was waiting at the gate to go onto the stage and Billy decided to do some autographs and selfies. That's fine to promote the game down here, I get it. But at the same time it took them another few minutes and they were close to 15 minutes late onto the stage. I don't know how you can be late when you work to a stringent itinerary.'
While Queensland might not be happy with the Blues, NSW great Gould was left disappointed Cherry-Evans wasn't granted a farewell in the Origin arena. Slater made the stunning decision to drop captain and halfback Cherry-Evans after a poor showing in Game 1.
Slater becomes the first coach to drop a captain mid-series this century and his decision was described as 'monumental' by AAP reporter Scott Bailey. Cherry-Evans has most likely played his last game for Queensland having captained the side to a number of series victories.
And on Channel Nine's 100% Footy, Gould claimed he felt Chery-Evans didn't receive the send-off he deserved after all his dedication to the Maroon jersey. "He doesn't get that goodbye moment after a great career, they've said goodbye for him," he said on Monday. "He doesn't get to stand their on the field after a win or loss or draw at the end of the series and say 'this is my last time'.
"They've made their mind up for him, I think it's been pretty unceremonious actually. I think it's very, very ordinary to be honest."
Queensland Rugby League boss Ben Ikin has confirmed Slater will be in charge of the side next year with his contract finishing at the end of the 2026 series. However, Slater is under pressure to stop the dominance from NSW with Daley looking to take his state to their fourth successive win over Queensland.

'It's only match one' says Itoje after Lions mauled by Pumas

A disappointed British and Irish Lions team will set off for Australia on Saturday after suffering a 28-24 loss against Argentina in Dublin (Paul Faith) The British & Irish Lions captain Maro Itoje brushed off Friday's defeat against Argentina in Dublin, saying his side will "live, learn and get better". The Lions, who leave for a three-Test tour of Australia on Saturday, were outplayed in the first half and, after a second half resurgence, went down 28-24. Advertisement Bundee Aki and Tadhg Beirne both went over the Pumas line and the Lions were also awarded a penalty try but the visitors replied with three tries of their own including one for fly-half Tomas Albornoz who finished with 18 points. It was the first opening tour match loss since 1971 but there was much to build on as the team sets off on Saturday for Australia. Seventeen players were not considered by coach Andy Farrell because of their presence in domestic competitions last weekend or, in the case of Toulouse's Blair Kinghorn, this weekend. "We weren't as consistent as we would have liked to be," Itoje told Sky Sports. Advertisement "We only showed glimmers of what we can do. When we were on it, we looked good, we just need to do it more consistently. "We want to be more aggressive but we are building. It wasn't quite that, we will live, learn and get better." The Lions, who come together every four years as a team drawn from the best players in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, chose to play Argentina, ranked fifth in the world rather than a scratch team like the Barbarians to give themselves a stern test ahead of Australia. "Argentina showed us where we are lacking," said Itoje. "I am happy we had a hard-fought game. We live and learn. This is only match one." Advertisement Farrell admitted that his side, who have only been together a short time, have much to do before their next game against Western force in Perth on June 28. "You can't win a Test with that error rate," he said. "We lost enough balls in that game for a full tour, throwing balls that weren't on. "There was good and bad throughout. We were just a little bit off, I take responsibility for that. "I hope we are better off for that. We will keep building for the Test matches." - Under pressure - The Lions, however, were under pressure from the start as the Pumas went on the attack from the kick-off, Albornoz stroking over a penalty in the fifth minute. Advertisement The Lions then had a try ruled out when Luke Cowan-Dickie spilled the ball forwards as he reached for the line but Fin Smith levelled with a penalty. The Pumas hit back straight away as Ignacio Mendy stepped in off his wing, wrong-footed Duhan van der Merwe and slid through for the try. The Lions had a second try, this time from Sione Tuipulotu, ruled out before his centre partner Bundee Aki barged through for their opener. Albornoz knocked over two more penalties to make it 14-10 as the clock ticked towards the red. The Lions had time to restart and had a chance to regain the lead before the half-time whistle as the Pumas coughed up possession. Advertisement The Pumas, though, quickly retrieved it, attacking down the right and opening the door for Albornoz to skitter through under the posts for their second try of the half. He added the conversion to take a 21-10 lead at the break. The Lions began the second half strongly and picked up a penalty try when Puma prop Mayco Vivas came in from the side of a maul to prevent it going over the line, collecting a yellow card in the process. Shortly after, the Lions were in front, a bullocking run by prop Ellis Genge producing chaos in the Argentine defence and allowing Irish lock Tadhg Beirne to crash over. Just before the hour, the Pumas were back in front when Connacht's Santiago Cordero beat Marcus Smith in a sprint to the line for the try that sealed the game. bsp/ea

Andy Farrell says Lions ‘won't sugar-coat' defeat to Argentina

Andy Farrell demanded an improvement from his British and Irish Lions when they arrive in Australia after they slipped to a 28-24 defeat by Argentina in Dublin. The Lions lost their opening tour match for the first time since 1971 after their second-half fightback was overturned when Santiago Cordero finished the match-winning try in the 59th minute. Advertisement On Saturday they head Down Under before facing the Western Force a week later and Farrell is seeking an immediate response to the error-strewn display seen at a sold-out Aviva Stadium. 'We made it a tough game. Congratulations to Argentina, they thoroughly deserved to win the match. I'm sure that's a big moment in Argentinean rugby history,' Farrell said. 'We had plenty of opportunities and we should have done better to convert them, but the whole story of the game is that we compounded too many errors. 'I wouldn't give familiarity as an excuse. We need to be better than that. The Lions are good players coming together. Advertisement 'We won't sugar-coat this. We need to be honest because if we're not honest, how do we gain trust with each other? 'Losing hurts, especially in this jersey. We need to find the solutions pretty quickly and be honest with ourselves because some good has to come from this. 'Of course we asked a lot of the players and maybe we put too much pressure on the side because it looked like we were a little disconnected at times. 'We'll review what we said we were going to do as a team. We need to make sure we get something positive from this because it's all about how we move forward. 'Some players will be happy and some players won't and will be dying to get another chance out there. We've got to learn a lot of lessons from that. Advertisement 'We want to see a better all round performance. There wasn't just one thing, it was the compounding of quite a few bits. 'The amount of balls that we threw blindly either on to the floor or to the opposition was a standout. 'The scraps on the floor always seemed to go to Argentina, so there was a bit more fight and hunger from them that we can't accept.' Maro Itoje's first game as captain ended in defeat (Brian Lawless/PA) Maro Itoje criticised the Lions' accuracy as his first outing as captain ended in the tourists' first defeat to Argentina in eight matches.. 'It was a spectacular occasion. The fans gave us a glimpse of what to expect in Australia,' Itoje said. 'We gave ourselves numerous opportunities but we weren't accurate enough at times and weren't consistent enough in piling pressure on to Argentina.'

Fans fume over Benji Marhsall's bizarre snub of young gun as Galvin issue answered

Benji Marshall has hit back at reporters after opting to leave Tallyn Da Silva as an unused sub on the bench in the loss to the Raiders after reports emerged the young gun has been granted permission to negotiate with other clubs. Although the Wests Tigers may have found the long-term NRL answer to Lachlan Galvin's role with Latu Fainu having his best game in the jersey. On Friday, the reported he's been granted permission to negotiate with rival clubs and is free to walk early if he can secure a deal. The 20-year-old talent stuck behind Api Koroisau at the Tigers and has played 23 first-grade games since his debut in 2023, and looks every bit an NRL-level player. But he's spent the majority of 2025 in reserve-grade due to the fact the Tigers have Koroisau entrenched as their No.9. Da Silva is contracted to the Tigers until the end of 2026, but The Tigers had already stated the 20-year-old was free to leave if they extend Koroisau's current contract (also ending at the end of 2026). Da Silva was brought back into the Tigers fold on Friday night against the Raiders with Marshall set to use him off the bench. However, Marshall opted to leave Da Silva on the bench for the whole 80 minutes. The timing of the snub left Tigers fans confused. Despite trailing 16-0 at half-time, the Tigers made a comeback but needed some energy in the final 10 minutes. Although Da Silva was nowhere to be seen with Marshall feeling like the experience of Koroisau was more important. When Marshall was asked about his decision to leave Da Silva sitting as an unused substitute in the cold all night, the coach hit back. 'We needed to cover for (starting hooker) Api (Koroisau) as well, if he needed a spell, but the game's in the balance, you want your best players on the field,' Marshall said. 'If there was an opportunity to put Tallyn on, I would have, but we needed Api on the field.' When pushed on whether the young gun was leaving the club, Marshall played it coy. "Not sure," he replied. Fans have already admitted they would like Da Silva to stay beyond his current contract. But the decision to leave him on the bench in yet another Tigers loss left fans perplexed and frustrated with Marshall's coaching. Finally someone questioning benji about his bench in the press conference — Nucky Thompson (@nuckythompson8) June 20, 2025 Benji again puts pressure on his players by having an unused substitute on the bench. I think that's 4 games this year where we've had 16 v 17. #NRLTigersRaiders — Al Dente (@8thWonder_2040) June 20, 2025 Its not just Benji. Its the entire coaching staff. Latu Fainu should have started today. He is fit and there is no reason why he comes off bench. TDS unless he has a plan for him to come on at some time, and if you dont have confidence to put him on, than he shouldn't be on bench — Domc73 (@Domc73) June 20, 2025 Does Benji know that he has 4 bench guys he can use? — DW (@daveytigerz) June 20, 2025 One shining light in the loss to the Raiders at home was Latu Fainu. There were plenty of concerns when Galvin left the club with the Tigers' attack set to take a hit with the playmaker joining the Bulldogs. However, Fainu showed why many were fine to see Galvin leave with the young star showing plenty of promise in his return from injury. Jarome Luai was strong in the second-half for the Tigers and combined well with Fainu to send Starford To'a for a try. Fainu started on the bench, but came on played 53 minutes at five-eighth. He ran for 108 metres and made 16 tackles, but it was his creativity that had viewers impressed with the youngster. Former Broncos coach Kevin Walters claimed Fainu: "Changed the whole way the Tigers were playing." While Greg Alexander admitted: "They could't tackle him, he was a handful.' This is promising signs for Marshall going forward, but the Tigers now drop well outside the top eight with a tough game against the Manly Sea Eagles next week at Brookvale Oval.
