Indigenous communities are thinking about possibilities and concerns for how AI can help them preserve and pass on their languages and their cultures.
Today on Commotion, host Elamin Abdelmahmoud is joined by Indigenous artists Marek Tyler and Susan Blight to discuss how AI could integrate Indigenous values and provide knowledge for future generations.
We've included some highlights below, edited for length and clarity. For the full discussion, listen and follow Commotion with Elamin Abdelmahmoud on your favourite podcast player.

Elamin: Marek, talk to me a little about the most promising aspect of what AI could do for Indigenous communities.
Marek: One of the most promising aspects, in my opinion, for AI is the potential to support Indigenous self-determination by enabling data systems that reflect our values and our languages and our governance practices. Now, OK, how? Well, when ethically developed, I think an AI can manage and protect their cultural knowledge and facilitate collective decision-making, grounded in our worldview.
I think it's most important to remember that it's a tool to strengthen sovereignty, it's not just to boost efficiency. It depends entirely on who owns it, who controls the technology, who owns the infrastructure. So imagine 50 years from right now, Susan and I, our nieces' and nephews' generations coming, imagine them collaborating with their aunties and uncles who helped train that AI 50 years prior. Because their community took the responsibility to own their knowledge, to take care of the knowledge, to own the data, to care of infrastructure.
My thoughts are when — not if — Indigenous communities start training AI, we're not just going to feed it data. We're teaching it the principles of iyinisiwin [wisdom and knowledge]. We are teaching it to practice respect, humility, uphold our governance systems — all of those pieces so that it learns to learn like us, to think like us, to walk in our ways. So we decide who the helper is and how they're taught and what they're taught, and how the future generations are going to be served, not the other way around.
Elamin: Protecting the environment is a core belief for a lot of Indigenous communities. But one of the biggest concerns around AI technology is the environmental impact of so much energy, so much water, goes into maintaining large AI systems. Susan, what do you make of the risks and the benefits that come with bringing AI into Indigenous communities and thinking about using it in that way?
Susan: Yeah, I think it represents one of the main areas, or arenas, of contention as it pertains to Indigenous AI or Indigenous people using AI. And that has to do with the fact that any technology that we employ has to align with our values. And so the environmental impacts of AI not currently having a system to run it that is sustainable is something that a lot of Indigenous people are talking about. But this also goes to what Marek is talking about as well, which is how we introduce our concepts, our place-based ways of living and being, as well as frameworks that are sustainable and reciprocal, into AI. We are not going to rely on something that is not sustainable and that actually harms the environment and our non-human relations.

With Growth Poised to Explode, Is Lucid Stock Finally a Buy?

(NASDAQ: LCID) appears to be one of the benefactors of Tesla 's recent stumble and fall. Lucid management noted an uptick in customers trading in their Teslas for a possibly less politically charged ride. And while the broader U.S. electric vehicle (EV) industry is struggling to grow as many anticipated, Lucid has set itself up extremely well for growth over the coming year. But does all this make it a buy finally? Let's find out. Setting records The broader EV industry might be sputtering right now, and investors might be grappling with the impact of tariffs, but Lucid has been on fire, in a good way. Lucid delivered 3,109 vehicles during the first quarter, a solid 58% jump compared to the prior year. It marked the sixth straight quarter for record deliveries, and it comes right on the cusp of Lucid accelerating production and deliveries for its most recent launch, the Gravity SUV. Lucid had only recently become satisfied with producing all the inventory needed for employees, studios, and test driving, and can now accelerate production for mainstream consumers. For investors who have grown accustomed to Lucid's strong delivery performance after years of disappointments, the good news is that the Gravity SUV should easily drive the company's results going forward. In fact, the Gravity SUV is estimated to have a market size six times that of Lucid's Air sedan. Analysts expect Lucid sales to increase 73% in 2025 and another 96% jump in 2026 compared to prior years. That's not even taking into account the upcoming midsize platform that will underpin numerous models at a more affordable price tag. Lucid's surge also comes at a good time as once-dominant EV player Tesla is facing consumer backlash due to CEO Elon Musk's brief stint in politics, which has resulted in the downward spiral of sales in key markets. In fact, Lucid's interim CEO, Marc Winterhoff, even noted there was a dramatic uptick in recent months in orders from former Tesla drivers. Is Lucid a buy now? With momentum seemingly in Lucid's corner in the near-term, despite a stagnating U.S. EV market, it might look like a good time for long-term investors to jump in. But there are a few things to consider. The first red flag came after reporting a near $400 million fourth-quarter loss when the EV maker announced that CEO Peter Rawlinson, who led the company for 12 years, would be stepping down. Lucid did its best to downplay the situation, but analysts weren't buying it, going as far to say product development could stall, consumer demand could be dampened, and additional funding opportunities could be at risk. It's also true that one of the biggest risks facing Lucid investors is the company's access to funding. The young company is rapidly burning through cash; its shareholder dilution is accelerating; and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) owns roughly 60% of Lucid through multiple investments throughout the company's life. On one hand, this is a substantially well-funded partner that gives Lucid access to much needed capital. On the other hand, being so reliant on one investor is never a good thing. Should Saudi's PIF pull support, it would be a massive overhang on the stock and make accessing funding more challenging and expensive. Ultimately, for as much momentum and potential as Lucid has, , there's too much uncertainty facing the company right now for most investors to buy in. The company needs to find the right leadership to lead the company and reassure investors. It also needs to reduce its cash burn while improving scale and margins. Plus, it needs to navigate potential industry supply disruptions, broader EV demand decline, and potential price increases due to tariffs. Lucid needs to execute the production ramp of the Gravity SUV and have it be a hit with consumers. If Lucid does all of those things, then it might be time to buy before the company goes into its next growth phase driven by a new midsize platform and more affordable price tag of around $50,000. Could Netflix Stock Help You Become a Millionaire?

There aren't many businesses that have rewarded shareholders as much as Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) has. The entertainment giant has seen its share price catapult 49,590% higher in the past two decades (as of June 19). A $2,020 investment in the company in June 2005 would be worth $1 million today, which is surely a wonderful outcome. Netflix is now worth $520 billion, making it one of the world's most valuable businesses. If you buy this streaming stock today, could it help you become a millionaire in the future? Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » Growing at a double-digit pace As a disruptor to the media industry, Netflix has achieved impressive growth historically. The company launched its streaming service in the U.S. in 2007. And by the end of 2024, it had eclipsed 300 million global subscribers. The business has a presence in more than 190 countries across the globe, highlighting its broad reach. Netflix no longer reports its quarterly subscriber metrics. However, the business continues to grow at a double-digit pace. Revenue was up 12.5% in the firset quarter. Management expects a 15.4% year-over-year jump in the current quarter. It's not a surprise that the U.S. and Canada are Netflix's two most mature markets. Naturally, the business might be close to reaching a saturation point in these countries. But there's still potential to penetrate less-developed international markets, particularly in Asia-Pacific and Latin America. As the middle class in these areas keeps growing while broadband internet access expands, Netflix can capture more customers. The leadership team isn't shying away from testing new waters. For example, Netflix no longer allows accounts that share passwords. What's more, the company finally launched an ad-supported streaming option in November 2022, something management said previously that it wouldn't do. This cheaper subscription tier should drive a doubling of ad revenue in 2025, a clear indication of the strong demand and monetization of the lower-cost plan. And more recently, we've seen Netflix cover live sports. The business has rights to show the National Football League's Christmas Day games through 2026. And it has the U.S. rights for the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2027 and 2031. Investors should be realistic about expectations Netflix has become a dominant enterprise. It has built up durable competitive strengths that make it hard to disrupt and that raise the chances of long-term success. Consider the Netflix brand. It's undoubtedly a leader in the media and entertainment space on a worldwide basis. Netflix is also used interchangeably as a verb, showcasing how much consumer mindshare the brand has. Netflix generated $40 billion in trailing-12-month revenue, and as previously mentioned, it has more than 300 million members. This gives it tremendous scale, allowing the business to invest heavily in content at a pace that its competitors can't match. Consequently, Netflix's scale has resulted in huge profits. The financial forecast calls for a 29% operating margin in 2025, with free cash flow of $8 billion planned as well. With so many wonderful qualities, investors might be inclined to buy shares in the hopes that Netflix can one day make them millionaires. But it's best to keep expectations in check. Netflix is a mature company, so it's likely that the pace of growth will continue to slow in the years ahead. That's a reasonable expectation to have. The valuation also doesn't help the cause. As of June 19, the stock trades at an expensive price-to-earnings ratio of about 58. To be fair, Netflix is an outstanding company, but it no longer has the massive upside it did when it was at an earlier stage of its lifecycle. It's worth pointing out that investors shouldn't put all their hope in a single business. Building wealth in the stock market requires a diversified approach. Should you invest $1,000 in Netflix right now? Before you buy stock in Netflix, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Netflix wasn't one of them. 2 Top Artificial Intelligence Stocks to Buy in June

Artificial intelligence (AI) investing is still a major theme in the market. Although some AI hyperscalers have had success rolling out AI models, they aren't making a ton of money from it yet. As a result, I think investors are better off buying shares of the companies benefiting from this spending. This makes shares of companies like Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and Taiwan Semiconductor (NYSE: TSM) excellent investments right now, and I think they are top AI stocks to buy with a little bit of June remaining. 1. Nvidia There's an old saying: History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes. Applying this wisdom to the AI arms race makes it easy to see a parallel: the gold rush. During the gold rush, only a few prospectors struck gold and got rich, while many of them lost everything. On the flip side, those who sold pickaxes and shovels to the prospectors made a ton of money. That gives rise to the investment description of "picks and shovels," which perfectly describes Nvidia and Taiwan Semiconductor. Nvidia makes graphics processing units (GPUs) that excel at processing workloads requiring immense computing power. A GPU is different from a traditional CPU because it can process multiple calculations in parallel. Combining this attribute with the ability to connect thousands of GPUs together in clusters allows AI hyperscalers to create jaw-dropping computing capacity used to train and run AI models. Nvidia has an iron grip on the data center market, with most estimates stating that Nvidia has a 90% or greater market share in the data center GPU space. This dominance has allowed Nvidia's stock to prosper, as its revenue has dramatically risen since the start of 2023. NVDA Revenue (TTM) data by YCharts Nvidia is far from done growing. It posted 69% revenue growth in Q1 and projects 50% in Q2. With Nvidia's clients announcing record data center spending for this year, it's no surprise that there's a ton of upside left. As a result, I think it's still one of the best AI stocks to own moving forward. 2. Taiwan Semiconductor Nvidia doesn't make the chips that go into its GPUs; that's done by Taiwan Semiconductor. Alongside Nvidia, Taiwan Semi also has several other notable names in the AI arms race as clients, as well as consumer electronics customers like Apple. If you've got a device that would be considered advanced technology, chances are there's a chip produced by Taiwan Semiconductor inside of it. Taiwan Semi is also expanding from its home base in Taiwan to the U.S., Japan, and Germany, reducing the single point of failure risk by having all manufacturing based in Taiwan. Taiwan is always at risk of war with mainland China, which could disrupt the global economy should action occur. However, a takeover would likely trigger the rest of the stock market to sell off heavily. As a result, I think investors overstate the risk of investing in a Taiwan-based company. There's a ton to like about TSMC as an investment, but its growth is near the top. Management projects that Taiwan Semi's AI-related revenue will increase at a 45% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) over the next five years, with total revenue increasing at nearly a 20% CAGR. That's market-crushing growth, but the stock trades at nearly the same multiple as the broader market, as measured by the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC). TSM PE Ratio (Forward) data by YCharts At 22.8 times forward earnings, its valuation is almost the same as the S&P 500's 22.9 times forward earnings. This reasonable valuation, combined with above-average growth, makes Taiwan Semiconductor a no-brainer buy today. Investors can confidently take a position here and expect solid returns over the next five years. Should you invest $1,000 in Nvidia right now?
