Jasmine Paolini beaten by Ons Jabeur in first grass match of 2025

NBC Sports2 days ago

BERLIN — Last year's Wimbledon runner-up Jasmine Paolini got off to a losing start in her first grass-court match of 2025, a straight-sets loss to Ons Jabeur.
Jabeur, a Wimbledon finalist in 2022 and 2023, beat the fourth-seeded Paolini 6-1, 6-3 in the second round of the Berlin Tennis Open after the Italian had a first-round bye.
Jabeur could face 2023 Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova or Diana Shnaider in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Paolini was playing for the first time since winning the French Open doubles title with fellow Italian Sara Errani. Paolini lost to Elina Svitolina in the fourth round of the French Open singles.

16 straight wins: Alcaraz powers on at Queen's Club

Carlos Alcaraz has overcome another tricky obstacle at the Queen's Club Championship as the top-seeded Spaniard dispatched France's Arthur Rinderknech with little fuss 7-5 6-4 to reach the semi-finals. Wimbledon champion Alcaraz toiled for three hours in stifling heat on Thursday to edge past fellow Spaniard Jaume Munar in a titanic scrap and afterwards admitted he did not know how he was still standing. It was far more straightforward against unseeded Rinderknech, the player he also beat in his opening match two years ago when he went on to win the title at the prestigious Wimbledon warm-up event in west London. Listen to that connection 💥@QueensTennis | #HSBCChampionships | @carlosalcaraz — ATP Tour (@atptour) June 20, 2025 The 22-year-old converted each of his two break points on another sweltering Friday as he extended his sequence of match wins to a career-long 16. "I could be better. Honestly I was thinking I was going to feel much worse than I did today," five-time grand slam champion Alcaraz said on court. "I'm glad it was only one hour 20 minutes today." Britain's Jack Draper also continued his Wimbledon build-up successfully as he reached the semi-finals at Queen's for the first time with a 6-4 5-7 6-4 defeat of American Brandon Nakashima. Draper not only kept himself on track for the prestigious ATP 500 title, but also secured the win that guarantees a top-four seeding at Wimbledon where he will be the big home hope. The 23-year-old was fully tested by world No.32 Nakashima and his powerful game began to misfire as he lost the second set on the Andy Murray Arena. But Draper settled back into the groove in the deciding set and broke serve in the seventh game with one of his trademark forehand pile drivers. The left-hander had to save a break point when serving for the match at 5-4 but recovered to seal victory and set up a clash with Czech Jiri Lehecka, the conqueror of Alex de Minaur who had earlier on Friday beaten Britain's Jacob Fearnley 7-5 6-2. "It means the world to me to reach the semi-finals here," said Draper, bidding to become the first British player to win the title at the prestigious west London club since Murray won for a record fifth time in 2016. "I think there's going to be an even bigger buzz at the weekend and that will give me more energy to keep progressing." "Delicious from @jackdraper0" 🤤@QueensTennis | #HSBCChampionships — ATP Tour (@atptour) June 20, 2025 While being ranked fourth means Draper will avoid either defending champion Alcaraz or world No.1 Jannik Sinner until the semi-finals at Wimbledon, Draper shrugged off its significance. "I kept getting asked about that by the journalists but I've got to reach the semi-finals first," he said. Alcaraz will face either fourth seed Holger Rune or Spanish veteran Roberto Bautista Agut in the semi-final.

Tennis star Sinner releases duet with Italian tenor Bocelli

Tennis star Jannik Sinner has turned his hand to music releasing a duet on Friday with the renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. The song, "Polvere e Gloria" (Dust And Glory), features three-time Grand Slam champion Sinner, not singing but repeating parts of his winning and losing speeches, which he recorded at Bocelli's studio in Tuscany. Advertisement "I am very happy and honoured to be part of this project with Andrea, who for 30 years has been a unique and extraordinary voice, a flag for our country in the rest of the world," said world number one Sinner. "I could never have imagined hearing my voice in one of his songs. It's extremely moving." Sinner won the US Open in 2024 and the Australian Open in 2024 and 2025, among 19 ATP titles. He finished runner-up in the French Open on clay at Roland Garros this month. The track features both Italian and English lyrics. The accompanying video shows Sinner and Bocelli, two of the most famous Italians in the world, in a bucolic countryside setting, seated at a piano. Advertisement The video features personal and archive images from the duo's childhoods, along with scenes filmed as they collaborated at Bocelli's estate. While Bocelli, 66, has performed at major events including the Olympic Games and the World Cup, Sinner is the first Italian to top either the men's or women's singles world rankings in tennis. His image as a national hero in Italy, however, was tarnished by a high-profile doping scandal involving accidental contamination, which, after a lengthy series of events, earned him a three-month suspension between February and May. Since his return, Sinner, 23, has reached the finals of the Masters 1000 in Rome and the French Open, losing both times to his great rival Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. On Thursday, he was defeated in the second round of the grass-court tournament in Halle, Germany, by Kazakh Alexander Bublik, ranked 45th in the world. jr/ea/bsp

Meanwhile, Massimiliano Allegri's team are hoping to secure a deal for Luka Modric in the near future and also remain in talks with Valencia for 22-year-old midfielder Javi Guerra. In terms of outgoings, Milan could potentially offload centre-forward Alvaro Morata sooner than expected.
