Guv VK Singh discusses ropeway transport plan for Mizoram with officials
Aizawl: Mizoram governor gen VK Singh held a consultative meeting on Tuesday at Raj Bhavan with senior officials from the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH), national highways logistics management limited (NHLML), and the urban development & poverty alleviation (UD&PA) department to explore the implementation of the national ropeways development programme — Parvatmala Pariyojana — in Mizoram.

Stressing the urgency of alternative transport solutions to ease growing urban traffic congestion, the governor emphasised the need to expand development beyond the core of Aizawl, which faces increasing space constraints. He stressed that connectivity for remote and hilly areas must be a priority, noting that the Parvatmala project could provide a viable solution if executed efficiently through interdepartmental coordination.
MoRTH additional secretary Vinay Kumar, who led the central team, assured the governor that necessary measures would be taken to facilitate the rollout of a ropeway project in Mizoram. He emphasised the scheme's suitability for improving mobility in hilly terrain, noting that 90% of the project revenue could be reinvested for local development.
State UD&PA secretary Lalmalsawma Pachuau discussed the plans on the proposed ropeway corridors under the Aizawl sustainable urban transport project (ASUTP). He outlined a comprehensive mobility plan developed for the 280 sq km greater Aizawl area, which includes multiple urban transport initiatives such as ropeways, pedestrian infrastructure enhancements, truck terminals, and bus system improvements.
Other present at the meeting were secretary to the governor Ajit Roy, UD&PA director Jacob Lalawmpuia, NHLML vice president Prashant Jain, and other officials from the UD&PA department.

In a landmark move to enhance road safety, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced that from January 1, 2026, all new two-wheelers sold in India, irrespective of engine capacity, must come equipped with Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS). In addition, dealerships will be required to provide two BIS-certified helmets with every new purchase, one for the rider and one for the ABS is mandatory only for two-wheelers with engine capacities above 125cc. With the new mandate, this safety feature will be made compulsory across the board, including for scooters and motorcycles in the entry-level segment. ABS prevents wheel lock-up during sudden braking, significantly reducing the risk of skidding or losing control, especially in emergencies or on slippery surfaces. Studies have shown that ABS can reduce accident risk by 35 to 45 decision is driven by alarming road safety statistics. Two-wheelers accounted for 44.5% of all road accident fatalities in India in 2022, with many of these deaths attributed to head injuries and loss of vehicle control during braking. To further address these concerns, the government has also made it compulsory for dealerships to supply two BIS-certified helmets at the time of delivery. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday introduced a FASTag-based annual pass, effective from August 15. The Annual Toll Pass (ATP) will cost Rs 3,000, down from the earlier Rs 10,000, and will be valid for one year from the date of activation or up to 200 visits, whichever comes first. The policy intends to simplify toll payments, alleviate congestion, and reduce friction at toll booths across the country. What is the Validity? The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will start issuing the pass from August 15 for Rs 3,000. It will be valid for one year from the purchase date or 200 travels at National Highway and Expressway fee plazas. Once the trip limit has been surpassed, you can renew an ATP for a year. Alternatively, you can also use the FASTag, as purchasing an ATP is not mandatory to drive on the NHAI network. Those who want to continue utilising FASTag can do so. As per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), this scheme falls under the National Highways Fee (Amendment) Rules, 2025. Who Can Use the Annual Pass? It is designed specifically for non-commercial private vehicles, including cars, jeeps and vans. To be qualified for the facility, the vehicle must have a valid registration and a functional FASTag. This pass does not cover commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses, or taxis. The annual toll pass can be activated and renewed using a dedicated link that the government will soon make accessible on the Rajmarg Yatra App as well as the MoRTH and NHAI official websites. Here's How Much You Can Save With the ATP: Delhi to Mumbai From Delhi to Mumbai, there are approximately 12 to 15 toll plazas, including Kherki Daula, Kishangarh, Ahmedabad Ring Road, Surat, Vapi, and Dahisar. On closed-tolling highways, such as the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, a vehicle is only charged at the entry and exit points, indicating that it is a single trip. So, if the one-way toll charge is around Rs 1,900, the round-trip will be Rs 3,800. However, if you choose the new FASTag yearly plan, you pay only Rs 3,000 per year and get unlimited travel till you finish 200 trips. Delhi to Jaipur Between Delhi and Jaipur, there are four tolls — Ghamroj, Hilalpur, Bhandarraj and Rajadhok. And if you go twice a month, the monthly expenses are around Rs 1,288, bringing the total annual cost to Rs 15, 456. But with ATP, you only need to pay Rs 3,000 for a year of unlimited travel on this route and can save more than Rs 12,000.
