Price of gold could drop to US$2,500: commodities expert
Sorry, we're having trouble with this video. Please try again later. [5006/404]
Gold's rally may be over, according to a commodities expert who predicts prices to drop substantially late next year to well under US$3,000 an ounce.
Max Layton, global commodities head at CITI Research, predicts gold will trade at about $2,500 to $2,700 in the second half of next year, down about $900 or so less than where it is today.
'Our call is very much a 2026 bearish gold call,' Layton told BNN Bloomberg in a Thursday interview. 'Near term, we have it averaging around $3,200 in the third quarter and $3,000 in the fourth quarter.'
Gold reached $3,382.40 per ounce Thursday and is up by more than 70 per cent over the past two years. Layton said CITI had been bullish on gold for the last couple of years as investors flocked to the precious metal. He said people are buying gold to hedge against a downside risks to their household wealth over fears of slowing economic growth and global uncertainty.
'The move from $2,600 to $3,300 this year has been all about investors buying bars and coins, particularly bars because they're hedging against a downside in U.S. and global growth, as well as a downside in equities related to that downside in U.S. and global growth, which has come about because of the combination of still extremely high interest rates in the U.S. by historical standards, and the tariffs.'
He however expects a drop in prices due to weakening investment demand, anticipated U.S. interest rate cuts and improved economic prospects.
'We're getting close to this One Big Beautiful Bill Act passing Congress,' said Layton. 'We think that is going to mark a shift in sentiment towards U.S. growth and basically a slight reduction, or even a moderate reduction, or even possibly by the end of next year, heading into the mid terms with lower interest rates as well.'
The bill has a section citing 'remedies against unfair foreign taxes.' It is expected to hit Canadians and international investors with a higher tax on dividends they received from U.S.-based investments, placing more money in American coffers to evidentially lead to growth in the U.S.'
This bill, the passing of it being net stimulatory for the U.S. economy, is going to reduce fears about growth and lead to a bit more positivity and a little less investment buying of gold,' said Layton. 'With that, you basically unwind the primary driver of the last $700 move in the old price higher from $2,600 to $3,300.'
While CITI paints a bleak picture for gold prices, major financial institutions such as Goldman Sachs project prices to rise to $3,700 by late 2025 and $4,000 by mid-2006 thanks to robust central bank buying. Bank of America as well predicts prices to rise to $4,000 within 2026.

Why Centrus Energy Stock Leaped 5% Higher Today
Centrus Energy (NYSEMKT: LEU) attracted the right kind of energy on the stock exchange Friday. The company's shares closed that session 5% higher, after it published news of an important contract renewal. That pop looked particularly impressive when matched against the S&P 500 's (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) trajectory, which dipped into the red with a 0.2% decline. An energetic extension Before market open that morning, Centrus divulged that the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) exercised its option to extend the company's contract to produce for it high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU). The extension now runs through June 30, 2026. HALEU is a type of nuclear fuel that has a level of enrichment considered most suitable for current nuclear reactor technology, including the small nuclear reactors (SMRs) that have recently come into vogue. In what's probably not a coincidence, Centrus' latest news comes barely a week after its business partner Oklo was tapped to build and operate a nuclear plant to supply heat and electricity to an Air Force base in Alaska. The two companies have a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in place for Centrus to supply HALEU for Oklo's projects. The trend is its friend In its press release on the contract extension, Centrus added that the DoE holds options for further extensions to the existing contract. It could opt to keep Centrus's HALEU supply going for as much as a further eight years. So it's not only good news that a major business for the company has a longer runway, but it's looking for more as time goes by. Assuming President Trump's embrace of nuclear energy remains in place (and possibly outlives his administration), Centrus will be in a very good position indeed. Iran-Israel Conflict Escalates: Boon for ExxonMobil's E&P Business?
The West Texas Intermediate crude price is currently nearing the $75-per-barrel benchmark, representing a significant improvement from $60.79 on May 30, thanks to the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. This is a boon for Exxon Mobil Corporation 's XOM exploration and production (E&P) activities, as upstream operations are positively correlated with oil prices. Crude price data are as per In other words, with ExxonMobil generating the majority of its earnings from upstream operations, almost 88% in the first quarter of 2025, the rise in oil price is a positive development for its E&P business, aiding its bottom line. Delving into the large integrated energy player's upstream business, XOM has a strong footprint in the oil-rich Permian, the most prolific basin in the United States. With operations spread across the low-cost basin, the high oil price will likely generate significant cash flows for XOM. To describe XOM's strong focus on the Permian, the energy giant acquired Pioneer Natural Resources, with integration progressing well, and the company has revised its annual synergy estimates upward from $2 billion to $3 billion for the first decade. Thus, strong Permian operations amid the favorable crude pricing environment are aiding ExxonMobil. Are CVX & BP Also Gaining From High Oil Prices? Both Chevron Corporation CVX and BP plc BP generate significant earnings from their upstream operations, and hence, they benefit from higher oil prices. In the Permian, Chevron's operations cover approximately 1.8 million net acres within the sub-basins of Delaware and Midland. Being a major player in the region, CVX's breakeven costs are also low. Hence, it can generate handsome cashflow from a high crude pricing environment. In the first quarter of this year, CVX mentioned that Permian primarily aided its production volumes. BP also has a solid upstream operation, comprising a top-tier oil and gas business in attractive basins. BP is also a low-cost producer. The British energy giant claimed that it has been able to keep the cost of producing oil very low. Thus, BP is among the lowest-cost producers in the industry to capitalize on increasing oil prices. XOM's Price Performance, Valuation & Estimates Shares of XOM have gained 7.9% over the past year, outpacing the 3.7% improvement of the composite stocks belonging to the industry. From a valuation standpoint, XOM trades at a trailing 12-month enterprise value to EBITDA (EV/EBITDA) of 7.06X. This is above the broader industry average of 4.26X. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for XOM's 2025 earnings hasn't been revised over the past seven days. XOM stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). IHT Q1 HOTEL REVENUES EXCEED $2.2 MILLION; IBC MANAGEMENT OBTAINED
Phoenix, AZ, June 20, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- InnSuites Hospitality Trust (NYSE American: IHT) reported Hotel Revenue results surpassing $2 million once again in the First Fiscal Quarter of 2026, (February 1, 2025, to April 30, 2025), with Total Revenue of approximately $2.2 million. Consolidated Net Income before non-cash depreciation expense was $221,330 for the 2026 First Fiscal Quarter ended April 30, 2025 (February 1, 2025, through April 30, 2025). Total Consolidated Fiscal First Quarter Net Income remained positive, at $39,030. IHT hotel operations were strong in the 2025 Fiscal Year ended January 31, 2025, and are contributing to a solid start in the current 2026 Fiscal Year. Combined Hotel May Revenue for both hotels was a notable $632,584, which has led to another remarkable Hotel Revenue amount of $2,838,347 for the first four Fiscal Months of Fiscal Year 2026. These are positive signs for InnSuites, as progress continues strong, while the Travel Industry in general, flattens. InnSuites Hospitality Trust (IHT), in late 2019, made a diversification investment in new development privately held UniGen Power, Inc. (UniGen), a company developing a patented, high profit potential, efficient clean energy generation innovation. With the continued strong demand from data centers, and added influx and popularity of electric cars, as well as growing projections for artificial intelligence, demand for electricity over the next five years is projected to approximately double. IHT holds convertible bonds and warrants that, if fully exercised, could result in IHT holding an approximately up to 15-20% or more ownership stake in UniGen. UniGen is currently concentrating on its next round of capital raising, in which IHT may participate. UniGen is a high-risk, clean, efficient, diversification investment, offering high potential investment return if and when successful. RRF LLLP, the Management Company for IHT, has recently become the Management Company for InnDependent Boutique Collection (IBC Hotels, LLC). This is another new diversification opportunity IHT may participate in further, in the future. In the process of ownership and management of branded and unbranded hotels, IHT recognized an unfulfilled need to provide hotel reservations, branding, and hotel services for global independent hotels, which at the time and still represent half the hotels in the world. In February 2014, IHT founded IBC Hotels, LLC to explore this unfulfilled opportunity, developing reservations, branding, and related hotel services doing business as 'InnDependent Boutique Collection '(IBC Hotels). Initial success in providing reservations for an IHT operated independent hotel was substantial. As this independent hotel services opportunity and the size of this potential demand was increasingly recognized in the travel industry, IBC Hotels was sold in August 2018 to a foreign hotel company planning expansion of independent hotel reservations and services internationally. The new owner added additional hotels to the reservation system, further developed, updated, and improved then-existing software, and pursued an agreement with a large international internet hotel guest source. When Covid hit in early 2020 and travel virtually briefly, but almost completely came to a standstill in March 2020, the new owner was not in a position to continue operations pausing IBC Hotels reservation services. On March 5, 2025, REF , an investment entity owned by the chairman and family of IHT majority IHT shareholder, purchased IBC Hotels, LLC, and hired RRF LLLP, the management company subsidiary of InnSuites Hospitality Trust (IHT), to manage the rebirth of IBC, to benefit from the substantial unfulfilled need worldwide for independent hotel and resort reservations, Boutique branding, and related hotel services. In the process, RRF LLLP, a 76% owned subsidiary of IHT and manager of IHT hotels, was engaged as manager of IBC obtaining a five-year option to purchase, at cost, IBC Hotels, LLC. This option is believed to provide IHT a valuable opportunity, if successful, to profit from the revitalization of InnDependent Boutique Collection (IBC Hotels). IHT management believes that due to real estate held on the books of IHT at book values believed to be significantly below current market value and due to the high clean energy and IBC diversification profit potential ahead, the IHT future looks bright. IHT's strong hotel operating results are reflected in three of the four most recent Fiscal Years profitable, even after accounting for substantial non-cash depreciation expense. Fiscal Year 2026 extended IHT's uninterrupted, continuous annual dividends to 55 years, since initial NYSE listing in 1971. Semi-annual dividends were paid February 5, 2025, and are anticipated for August 4, 2025. The IHT Annual Shareholder Meeting has been announced, and will be held at the IHT Phoenix Corporate Office, on August 14, 2025, at 1 PM.
