AsiaPay and McDonald's to launch online payment solution in Taiwan

AsiaPay is collaborating with the quick-service restaurant chain McDonald's to introduce an integrated online payment solution in Taiwan.
This strategic partnership will offer a quick and secure payment experience.
It will see the integration of online payment methods such as mobile payments, credit cards and e-wallets JKOPAY and LINEPAY.
The move benefits McDonald's customers ordering meals in-store, via self-service kiosks or via delivery platforms.
This partnership with AsiaPay represents a significant step in McDonald's digital transformation journey.
AsiaPay's payment system improves reporting and settlement procedures, increasing the restaurant chain's operational efficiency.
By leveraging AsiaPay's big data analytics, the chain will gain critical insights into consumer behaviour, buying preferences and patterns.
AsiaPay Taiwan business development director Albert Yeh stated: "We are thrilled to partner with McDonald's to offer Taiwanese consumers more flexible and diverse payment choices.
'By combining AsiaPay's technological expertise with McDonald's extensive customer base, we can accelerate the uptake of cashless payment in Taiwan and enhance the overall dining experience."
AsiaPay provides comprehensive payment systems to financial institutions, corporations and e-commerce merchants.
It supports e-wallets, international credit/debit cards, and buy now, pay later (BNPL) services.
Through its integrated payment service platform programme, AsiaPay claims to deliver certified payment processing systems and gateway solutions to around 100 banking institutions.
AsiaPay previously collaborated with My Menu to improve the digital dining experience for restaurants and hotels across Asia, aiming to transform payment processing and guest interactions in the hospitality sector.

Investors were mainly reacting to news the tech infrastructure company reported about a new business tie-up with an Asian peer. On Monday, Astera and Taiwanese chipmaker AIChip Technologies announced in a joint press release that they have formed a strategic business partnership. Together, the two will aim to exploit opportunities afforded by sky-high demand for artificial intelligence (AI) functionalities. AIChip, which specializes in application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips, and Astera are teaming up to offer "validated, interoperable solutions for hyperscalers building next-generation AI infrastructure," according to the press release. As the name suggests, a hyperscaler is essentially an extremely large data center. These are in vogue now due to the heavy resource requirements of AI. Astera and AIChip offered almost no details about their new partnership, including its financial parameters. Given that, it's tough to gauge how this collaboration might affect their fundamentals. Judging by the market's reaction, though, investors don't seem to mind -- teaming up on projects has clear potential to benefit both companies. SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son is envisaging setting up a $1 trillion industrial complex in Arizona that will build robots and artificial intelligence, Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. Son is seeking to team up with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. for the project, which is aimed at bringing back high-end tech manufacturing to the U.S. and to create a version of China's vast manufacturing hub of Shenzhen, the report said. SoftBank officials have spoken with U.S. federal and state government officials to discuss possible tax breaks for companies building factories or otherwise investing in the industrial park, including talks with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, the report said. SoftBank is keen to have TSMC involved in the project, codenamed Project Crystal Land, but it is not clear in what capacity, the report said. It is also unclear whether the Taiwanese company would be interested, it said. TSMC is already building chipmaking factories in the U.S. with a planned investment of $165 billion. Son is also sounding out interest among tech companies, including Samsung Electronics, the report said. The plans are preliminary and feasibility depends on support from the Trump administration and state officials, it said. A commitment of $1 trillion would be double that of the $500 billion "Stargate" project, which seeks to build out data centre capacity across the U.S., with funding from SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle. SoftBank and TSMC declined to comment. The White House and U.S. Department of Commerce did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The proposed scheme follows a series of big investment announcements SoftBank has made this year. In March, it announced it would acquire U.S. semiconductor design company Ampere for $6.5 billion and in April, it said it would underwrite up to $40 billion of new investment in OpenAI, of which up to $10 billion would be syndicated to other investors. McDonald's is set to join the growing list of companies subject to boycotts this year, led by a group advocating for "economic resistance" as a means toward corporate accountability and "real justice for the working class." As part of its ongoing "Economic Blackout Tour," The People's Union USA, the movement behind boycotts of Target and Walmart, is urging Americans to refrain from shopping at the restaurant chain between June 24 and 30. Why It Matters The first half of 2025 has been marked by boycotts of several household-name companies, sparked by certain corporations rolling back diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, as well as wider pushback against practices such as tax avoidance and underpaying workers. Since late 2023, McDonald's has also been battling a boycott led by the pro-Palestinian Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement for alleged complicity with the actions of the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip. Since February, the group has orchestrated boycotts of Amazon, Walmart and Target, as well as periodic "economic blackouts," during which it says Americans should "avoid shopping, streaming, online orders, fast food, and everything in between," and rely exclusively on small, local businesses. The McDonald's boycott has received less attention than the campaigns against Walmart, Amazon and Target, the latter of which Schwarz said should be subject to a "permanent boycott" in order to feel "the full power of the people." Earlier this year, The People's Union USA published a list of core grievances with each targeted company to its website, largely centered around tax avoidance, conditions of workers and general monopolistic practices. McDonald's was included in the list for "tax avoidance and known lobbying against wage increases," issues that have in recent years resulted in significant criticism of the company, as well as legal consequences. What People Are Saying John Schwarz, founder of The People's Union USA, in a video posted to Instagram in late May: "Economic resistance is working. Target, Walmart and Amazon are all feeling it, talking about it. They are talking about the boycotts. They are talking about The People's Union USA. My friends, we are fighting for these corporations to finally pay their fair share of federal income taxes to alleviate that from the American worker. We are also fighting for these companies to hold manufacturers and themselves to a reasonable profit margin cap and equality across the board." Genna Gent, vice president of government relations for McDonald's, in a 2019 letter to the National Restaurant Association and obtained by Politico: "Going forward, McDonald's Corporation will not use our resources, including lobbyists or staff, to oppose minimum wage increases at the federal, state or local levels. Nor will we participate in the association advocacy efforts designed expressly to defeat wage increases." What Happens Next The People's Union USA plans to organize an Independence Day boycott, along with a month-long boycott of Starbucks, Amazon and Home Depot in July. Schwarz has also announced that McDonald's, Walmart and Lowe's will be subject of a boycott in August.
