KDE Plasma 6.4 Is Out Now With Colorful New Features
The new Plasma desktop version 6.4 has been released with a new KRunner feature identifying hex codes, plus color and display management improvements.
There are several application launcher, widgets, notifications, and user experience enhancements in Plasma 6.4 release.
Expect helpful features like HDR calibration, automatic file system error repair, and Do Not Disturb mode enabled when full-screening applications.
Four months after the release of 6.3, the KDE team has announced the full release version 6.4 of the Plasma desktop environment. It's bringing several brand-new features and improvements for KDE fans like myself.
Let's start with the most colorful new features. First, Plasma's KRunner application, which I've enjoyed putting to use lately, has a new color-oriented feature: type in any hex code and KRunner will show you a little sample of that color. If you happen to know the official CSS or SVG name of a color, you can type that too, and KRunner will identify and show it to you.
Second, there are new color management dials and knobs when you go to System Settings > Display and Monitor. Plasma can now walk you through HDR calibration with its new wizard, and it'll also let you limit color depth. There's Extended Dynamic Range support now as well. Of course, you'll only see settings for these if you're using a monitor that supports those features.
You'll find some changes in your taskbar too, including a green "New!" tag highlighting recently installed software. I know this will be helpful because sometimes when I install something, it seems like anyone's guess which categorization folder Plasma will decide to put it in.
Some of the widgets in the app drawer are getting updated too. The Disks & Devices menu will now automatically scan for file system errors when you plug a disk in. If Plasma detects errors, it will show a "Try to Fix" button that you can click to initiate an automatic repair. The media player widget also has a new speed controls for audio or video you're playing.
The notifications that show up above your task drawer are also getting improvements. For one, you'll now get a visual graph of your transfer speeds when you move files around, in addition to the remaining time estimate. There are also small improvements to the software update and microphone access notifications. All Plasma notifications will now by default enter "Do Not Disturb" mode when you fullscreen any application, which is a nice little quality-of-life update for gamers.
There are several small changes coming for Plasma user interfaces you might detect if you're looking closely. The dark version of Plasma's default "Breeze" theme is getting a little darker, and in any theme the desktop will get shadier in the background whenever you're asked to authenticate. There are also updates to the InfoCenter, KMenuEdit app, and the lock screen password field.
To see everything new, check out the link to the official announcement post below. As a daily driver of KDE Plasma, I'm looking forward to giving 6.4 a try when it shows up. I don't see it yet on my Garuda Linux dekstop, but it usually arrives pretty quickly. Be sure to keep your Plasma-sporting distro up-to-date to make sure you get this update as soon as possible.
If you aren't currently using it but want to give the KDE life a go, check out some of our recommended distros with Plasma environments. When you're ready to daily-drive it, I recommend you follow our guide to installing Linux.

Altum Sequencing develops tool to monitor solid tumour treatment response
Cancer cell monitoring startup Altum Sequencing has developed a tool that uses a simple blood sample for monitoring treatment response in individuals with solid tumours. The company is based in the C3N-IA Science Park at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), Spain. According to the university, the study detailed the tool's effectiveness, highlighting that although many individuals with hormone receptor+ (HR+) breast cancer respond well initially, there is a relapse rate of up to 40%. By utilising the developed technology and examining circulating tumour DNA, researchers have succeeded in predicting the occurrence of clinical relapses as much as 68 months earlier than what conventional methods could reveal. The process for the early detection of relapses starts with obtaining an initial tumour biopsy. From this sample, patient-specific mutations are determined. Subsequently, blood tests are analysed for the presence of these specific mutations in the circulating tumour DNA. This approach is not limited to breast cancer; it is applicable to any solid tumour type, and researchers are seeking regulatory approvals in the US and Europe to make it globally accessible. Altum Sequencing president Joaquín Martínez-López said: 'Our goal is not to diagnose cancer, but to provide physicians with an effective tool to monitor the evolution of the disease after treatment. 'Current diagnostic tools have sensitivity limitations, which makes early detection of these relapses difficult, but thanks to NGS (next generation sequencing) DNA sequencing technology, we can detect one tumour cell among a million healthy cells from a simple blood sample.' The startup is also exploring the integration of generative AI. It has already incorporated machine learning algorithms and now aims to utilise this new technology to further enhance its diagnostic processes. The company has received backing from the Community of Madrid, the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation, and the European Regional Development Fund. It is also partnering with hospitals and research centres, including the Gregorio Marañón Hospital and Universidad Complutense. Circle stock price today: CRCL shares rise again after Senate passes stablecoin bill. Here's the latest
The share price of crypto and fintech company Circle Internet Group (NYSE: CRCL) is rising yet again today in early market trading. Those security codes you ask to receive via text leave your accounts vulnerable. Do this instead Buyer's or seller's housing market? Zillow's new rating for 250 major markets How one company is revolutionizing the way we use everyday water After the stock jumped over 33% on Wednesday (markets were closed for Juneteenth on Thursday), shares in the newly publicly traded company were up as high as another 15% in premarket trading this morning. And you can thank the U.S. Senate for that. Here's what you need to know. Circle Internet Group, better known as Circle, is a fintech company that offers a range of financial products. Circle was founded in 2013 as a Bitcoin payments processor. The company currently offers a range of fintech developer services, including digital wallets and blockchain transfer solutions. However, Circle is best known for its two stablecoins, USDC and EURC. Stablecoins are a type of cryptocurrency that is much less vulnerable to wild price swings because a stablecoin's price is tied directly to a real-world asset. In the case of the USDC stablecoin, its value is tied directly to the U.S. dollar. Circle's EURC stablecoin is tied to the value of the Euro. Stablecoins thus help provide investors with stability while still allowing them to invest in crypto assets. In terms of market cap, USDC is currently the seventh most valuable cryptocurrency with a value of over $61 billion. The most valuable stablecoin in terms of market capitalization is Tether, which has a total valuation exceeding $155 billion. Cryptocurrency king Bitcoin's market cap is currently north of $2.1 trillion. In March 2024, Fast Company named Circle as one of its Most Innovative Companies based on the impact its stablecoin was having on the crypto industry. Shares in Circle Internet Group were at one point trading over 15% higher in premarket trading this morning. Some of those gains were lost when the markets opened, but currently, CRCL stock is still up over 12% in early market trading. That follows an impressive 33% rise in the stock's price on Wednesday. So why is Circle popping today? Well, you can thank the U.S. Senate. The congressional body passed the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins Act (GENIUS Act) on Tuesday. The act is the first to seek regulation of stablecoins. Its passage would establish a regulatory framework for stablecoins, further legitimizing the digital tokens and integrating them more closely within the U.S. economy. Such a move would likely only benefit stablecoin providers, like Circle. The GENIUS Act would also benefit stablecoin investors because it would require that stablecoins be backed by liquid assets, including U.S. dollars or short-term Treasury bills, notes Reuters. Issuers of stablecoins would also be required to disclose their reserves' composition on a monthly basis, leading to greater transparency. However, while Circle investors continue to cheer the Senate's passage of the GENIUS Act on Tuesday, the act may still not become law. That's because it now must go to the House for approval. And as Reuters notes, various groups, including the Conference of State Bank Supervisors, are calling for 'critical changes' to the bill. If the bill stalls in the House, or is killed, CRCL stock may give back some of the gains it has made this week. But as of today, Circle's stock price run has been nothing short of impressive. Circle Internet Group's initial public offering (IPO) was held just over two weeks ago on June 5. Since then, the price of CRCL stock has surged a staggering 589%. The IPO price of CRCL was $31 per share. As of the time of this writing, CRCL shares are trading at over $225 per share.
