Woman held ‘hostage' in video call scam for over a day in Chalakudy; ₹40,000 lost

A woman in Chalakudy was held hostage over a video call for more than a day by cyber fraudsters who manipulated her into transferring money through a series of threats. The victim, identified as Treesa from Melur, has filed a complaint with the cyber police regarding the incident on Tuesday.
According to the complaint, the scammer appeared on a video call dressed in a police uniform and falsely claimed that a duplicate SIM card issued in Treesa's name had been used by a man named Sandeep Kumar for illegal activities. The fraudster warned her not to leave the room and threatened that if the information was leaked, Sandeep's associates would come after her.
Fearing for her life, Treesa remained locked inside her room for nearly 36 hours. During this time, the fraudster instructed her to transfer nearly ₹3 lakh from her bank account to what he claimed was a 'government account.' When Treesa said she was unfamiliar with online transactions, she was told to go to the bank and deposit the amount directly.
Limit on account
She went to the bank and attempted to transfer ₹2.6 lakh to the fraudster's account. However, due to a limit on the account, the transaction could not be completed. The scammer then directed her to use Google Pay to send the money in smaller instalments. Treesa ended up transferring around ₹40,000 through multiple transactions to various numbers.
Repeated requests for money finally raised her suspicions and she informed her relative about the calls. Later, Treesa lodged a formal complaint with the cyber cell, and an investigation is now under way.

New Delhi, Jun 18 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to Advocate Sandeep Kumar, who was booked under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986, for allegedly acting as a deed writer in certain sale transactions. A bench comprising justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan was hearing a special leave petition filed by the advocate challenging the August 2, 2024, order of the Allahabad High Court, which had refused to quash an FIR registered under Sections 2 and 3 of the 1986 Act. Appearing on behalf of the petitioner, advocate-on-record Anurag Ojha submitted that Sandeep Kumar is a practising advocate who merely rendered professional assistance in preparing the sale deeds. He argued that the invocation of the Gangsters Act against a lawyer for such services was mechanical and arbitrary. It was pointed out that two FIRs form the basis of the gang chart under the Act, but in both cases, the Allahabad High Court has already granted interim relief, a stay in one FIR and protection from coercive action in the other. Taking note of the submissions, the apex court granted interim protection from arrest. Without expressing any opinion on the merits, the Bench observed, 'Heard learned counsel for the petitioner, who is a lawyer by profession and was instrumental in the execution of two sale deeds. There can't be any occasion for the petitioner to be booked under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986.' The Court issued notice in the matter and directed that the petitioner shall not be arrested in the interim, subject to his cooperation with the investigation. The matter has been listed for further hearing in the last week of August. A lawyer, his son, and five others duped a youth of Rs 38 lakh by faking an IAS appointment letter. Police suspect links to a broader fraud network A highly unusual case of fraud has surfaced in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where a lawyer, his son, and five associates allegedly defrauded a young man of Rs 38 lakh by falsely promising to secure him a position as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. The accused reportedly utilised a forged admit card, a counterfeit appointment letter, and a fabricated seal of the Government of India to perpetrate the scheme. The incident occurred in Laxmanpur Colony, situated in the Nagar Kotwali area. Local police have registered a case against seven individuals, including the lawyer and his son. IAS Job Scam The victim, Pranjal Tripathi, stated that he had appeared for the preliminary stage of the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2022. During this period, he became acquainted with Pranav Dwivedi, son of advocate Bajrang Dwivedi, a resident of Pipri Sai Nathpur in the Kurebhar area. According to Pranjal Tripathi, Pranav Dwivedi frequently visited his home and claimed to possess strong connections with Union Ministers, further asserting that he had previously helped several candidates become IAS and PCS officers. Fake Admit Card, Forged Appointment Letter Enticed by the prospect of achieving their long-cherished dream, Pranjal Tripathi and his family fell prey to the ruse. On January 18, 2023, in Lucknow, Pranav Dwivedi allegedly handed Pranjal Tripathi a fake admit card for the UPSC Mains and Interview and demanded multiple payments. These included Rs 26.5 lakh into his father's account, Rs 7 lakh into the account of neighbour Manish Dubey, Rs 80,000 to friend Shreyansh Agrahari, and Rs 2 lakh through Deepak Patel's shop, in addition to Rs 10,500 via Google Pay. In an extraordinary twist, Pranav Dwivedi and his associate Raj Mishra allegedly provided Pranjal Tripathi with a forged appointment letter bearing the Government of India seal, dated June 22, 2023. However, no appointment ever materialised. When Pranjal Tripathi began pressing for the return of the money, he was reportedly subjected to threats. Police Investigation Following his complaint to Superintendent of Police Kunwar Anupam Singh, a formal case was lodged against Pranav Dwivedi, Bajrang Dwivedi, Manish Dwivedi, Ashish Dwivedi, Raj Mishra, Shreyansh Agrahari, and Deepak Patel. Additional Superintendent of Police Akhand Pratap Singh confirmed that a case involving fraudulent activity amounting to Rs 38 lakh under the pretext of securing an IAS post has been registered. Preliminary investigations suggest that the matter is suspicious, and further actions will be taken based on evidence. Authorities have also indicated the possibility that the accused may be linked to a wider fraud network. Murder accused held after encounter in Mohali's Lakhnaur

A murder accused was shot in the leg during a police encounter on Friday night after he opened fire at a Kharar crime investigating agency (CIA) team that had gone to arrest him in Mohali's Lakhnaur area. The exchange of nearly 10 rounds of gunfire occurred near Sector 89, close to the District Administrative Complex, around 9.15 pm. According to police, Sandeep Kumar, a history-sheeter, sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the encounter and was immediately rushed to the civil hospital in Phase 6. He is currently under police custody and receiving treatment. Sandeep had been on the run and was wanted in connection with a murder case registered at the Phase 1 police station on May 26. CIA teams had been tracking his movement for several days, but he managed to evade arrest on multiple occasions. On Friday, police received a tip-off that Sandeep would be visiting the Lakhnaur area to supply drugs. Acting on this intelligence, the CIA team laid a trap. However, when they attempted to apprehend him, Sandeep opened fire and fled towards a deserted area. Despite repeated warnings to surrender, he discharged four to five rounds at the police. In retaliation, the CIA team returned fire, hitting him in the leg, investigators said. Mohali senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harmandeep Singh Hans visited the site to oversee the operation, and said a fresh FIR had been registered against Sandeep under charges of attempt to murder and relevant sections of the Arms Act. A .32-bore pistol used by Sandeep in the encounter has been recovered, although the .315-bore pistol linked to the May 25 murder remains missing. Preliminary investigations revealed that Sandeep was heading toward Fatehgarh Sahib when intercepted. He is also wanted in a narcotics case in Swarghat, Himachal Pradesh. Police records indicate that Sandeep is a habitual offender with at least seven previous cases registered against him, including murder, rape, kidnapping, POCSO Act violations and assault. He is allegedly the leader of a local criminal gang operating in Mohali and has the highest number of criminal cases registered at the Balongi and Phase 1 police stations. Police plan to produce him in court and seek remand for further interrogation, particularly to trace the remaining weapons and identify his associates.
