Delhi: 2 held for GST fraud in Haryana, UP
Two members of a syndicate were arrested for generating fake Goods and Services Tax (GST) invoices to the tune of crores of rupees using PAN cards and mobile phone numbers of several people, police said on Saturday. The accused also replaced the contact details of genuine GST-registered firms on the website of the GST department and used them to generate false invoices, police said. Police are investigating the syndicate. (Representational image) The accused were identified as Inderpal Singh, 45, who is a lawyer, and his associate Sandeep Kumar, 27. The complaint in this case was registered recently by a businessman who said that when he applied for GST registration for his firm, he discovered that two GST numbers had already been issued on his PAN card without his knowledge. 'The fraudsters also acquired SIM cards using the complainant's Aadhaar card. We registered a case of impersonation, cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy and started an investigation,' said deputy commissioner of police (southwest) Amit Goel. Police approached the GST department and acquired the details of the two firms for which GST numbers had been issued using the complainant's PAN card. Police found that the two firms' listed addresses were fake. Police managed to track down one of the accused through technical surveillance and manual verification, and arrested Sandeep Kumar from Panipat in Haryana. Kumar revealed that he was an employee of Inderpal Singh, and they created bogus firms, police said. Police then arrested Singh from Shamli in Uttar Pradesh, the DCP said. 'They obtained details of firms registered under the GST Act from other members of the syndicate. Their associates provided them with the login details of the firms. After logging into the accounts on the GST department's website, the accused replaced the email IDs and phone numbers linked to the firms with their own. Then they contacted those who needed GST bills, and issued fake bills on the names of these firms. Inderpal revealed that he procured details of GST-registered firms from his associate by paying ₹ 25,000 to ₹ 30,000. His earnings were in lakhs of rupees through the cyber fraud,' added DCP Goel. Three smartphones, one laptop and a pen drive used by the accused to commit the cyber fraud were recovered, police said.

SC grants anticipatory bail to advocate booked under Gangsters Act
New Delhi, Jun 18 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to Advocate Sandeep Kumar, who was booked under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986, for allegedly acting as a deed writer in certain sale transactions. A bench comprising justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan was hearing a special leave petition filed by the advocate challenging the August 2, 2024, order of the Allahabad High Court, which had refused to quash an FIR registered under Sections 2 and 3 of the 1986 Act. Appearing on behalf of the petitioner, advocate-on-record Anurag Ojha submitted that Sandeep Kumar is a practising advocate who merely rendered professional assistance in preparing the sale deeds. He argued that the invocation of the Gangsters Act against a lawyer for such services was mechanical and arbitrary. It was pointed out that two FIRs form the basis of the gang chart under the Act, but in both cases, the Allahabad High Court has already granted interim relief, a stay in one FIR and protection from coercive action in the other. Taking note of the submissions, the apex court granted interim protection from arrest. Without expressing any opinion on the merits, the Bench observed, 'Heard learned counsel for the petitioner, who is a lawyer by profession and was instrumental in the execution of two sale deeds. There can't be any occasion for the petitioner to be booked under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986.' The Court issued notice in the matter and directed that the petitioner shall not be arrested in the interim, subject to his cooperation with the investigation. The matter has been listed for further hearing in the last week of August. The petitioner argued on an important legal issue whether mere consultation with or professional assistance from a lawyer in preparing sale deeds can lead to criminal proceedings under stringent laws like the Gangsters Act. IRCON completes electrification of Rajdhani main route in northeast
1 2 3 4 5 6 Dibrugarh: In a landmark achievement, IRCON International Limited has successfully completed the electrification of the entire Rajdhani main route through the Lumding and Tinsukia divisions, following the completion of statutory inspection and full-sectional speed trial on the crucial Dibrugarh–Duliajan section. The 62 Route KM and 93 Track KM Dibrugarh–Duliajan section of Tinsukia Division underwent its final statutory inspection Monday by principal chief electrical engineer (PCEE) Sandeep Kumar, conducted in the presence of divisional railway manager (DRM) Tinsukia Parag Katre. The successful speed trial marks the completion of a critical infrastructure project that will transform rail connectivity to the farthest reaches of northeast India. "This milestone represents a transformative moment for railway operations in the northeast. The complete electrification eliminates the need for traction changes and enables seamless electric operations throughout the Rajdhani route, significantly reducing travel time while improving operational efficiency," said PCEE Sandeep Kumar during the inspection. The achievement comes under the ambitious RE PKG-6 Project through which IRCON has commissioned an impressive 480 Route KM and 624 Track KM of Overhead Equipment (OHE) work across the region. This extensive electrification network now enables trains to operate on 25kV electric traction throughout the route, marking a major step forward in Indian Railways ' commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly infrastructure development. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo DRM Tinsukia Parag Katre emphasised the operational benefits of the completed electrification. "The elimination of traction changes means trains can now run seamlessly from major cities to remote areas of northeast India using electric power throughout the journey. This not only reduces travel time but also enhances the reliability and efficiency of our services," he said. The electrification project holds particular significance for the northeast region, which has historically faced connectivity challenges due to its remote location and difficult terrain. The Rajdhani main route serves as a vital lifeline connecting the northeastern states to the rest of India, and the complete electrification ensures improved passenger services and freight operations. Beyond operational improvements, the project aligns with Indian Railways' broader environmental goals. Electric traction produces significantly lower carbon emissions compared to diesel locomotives, contributing to the national commitment to reduce the transportation sector's environmental footprint. The shift to electric operations is expected to result in substantial reductions in both air pollution and operational costs over the long term. Railway officials said passengers and freight operators can expect to see immediate benefits from the electrification, including reduced journey times, improved punctuality, and enhanced service reliability. The project also positions the NE region to benefit from future high-speed rail developments and increased freight capacity.

Murder accused held after encounter in Mohali's Lakhnaur
A murder accused was shot in the leg during a police encounter on Friday night after he opened fire at a Kharar crime investigating agency (CIA) team that had gone to arrest him in Mohali's Lakhnaur area. The exchange of nearly 10 rounds of gunfire occurred near Sector 89, close to the District Administrative Complex, around 9.15 pm. According to police, Sandeep Kumar, a history-sheeter, sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the encounter and was immediately rushed to the civil hospital in Phase 6. He is currently under police custody and receiving treatment. Sandeep had been on the run and was wanted in connection with a murder case registered at the Phase 1 police station on May 26. CIA teams had been tracking his movement for several days, but he managed to evade arrest on multiple occasions. On Friday, police received a tip-off that Sandeep would be visiting the Lakhnaur area to supply drugs. Acting on this intelligence, the CIA team laid a trap. However, when they attempted to apprehend him, Sandeep opened fire and fled towards a deserted area. Despite repeated warnings to surrender, he discharged four to five rounds at the police. In retaliation, the CIA team returned fire, hitting him in the leg, investigators said. Mohali senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harmandeep Singh Hans visited the site to oversee the operation, and said a fresh FIR had been registered against Sandeep under charges of attempt to murder and relevant sections of the Arms Act. A .32-bore pistol used by Sandeep in the encounter has been recovered, although the .315-bore pistol linked to the May 25 murder remains missing. Preliminary investigations revealed that Sandeep was heading toward Fatehgarh Sahib when intercepted. He is also wanted in a narcotics case in Swarghat, Himachal Pradesh. Police records indicate that Sandeep is a habitual offender with at least seven previous cases registered against him, including murder, rape, kidnapping, POCSO Act violations and assault. He is allegedly the leader of a local criminal gang operating in Mohali and has the highest number of criminal cases registered at the Balongi and Phase 1 police stations. Police plan to produce him in court and seek remand for further interrogation, particularly to trace the remaining weapons and identify his associates.
