Lou Christie, chart-topping singer and 1960s idol, dies aged 82
American singer-songwriter Lou Christie, a 1960s idol who soared to the top of the charts in the US and UK with songs including Lightnin' Strikes, has died aged 82.
Christie died at home in Pittsburgh after a short illness his wife, Francesca, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday night.
No further details were shared.
The singer, famous for his stunning four-octave range and distinctive falsetto, enjoyed his first success aged just 20 with the songs The Gypsy Cried and Two Faces Have I in 1963. More Trending
He then hit the big time in 1966 with Lightnin' Strikes, which soared to number one on the US Billboard charts.
Later that year he courted controversy with the track Rhapsody in the Rain thanks to its suggestive lyrics about a teenager's sexual encounter, which saw it banned from radio stations.
A re-recorded version with toned-down lyrics was later released at the insistence of his record label, MGM.
His 1969 song I'm Gonna Make You Mine subsequently topped the charts in the UK.

Claudia Winkleman 'eternally grateful' after undergoing surgery
Claudia Winkleman has undergone eye surgery, she has revealed. The Traitors host, 53, has taken to social media to thank her eye surgeon for operating on her today. 'This amazing human makes me see. He's operated on my eyes before and he did it again today,' she said on Instagram, alongside a picture of her next to Dr Julian Stevens. 'No eyeliner for weeks and I sleep in googles (no words) but I'm eternally grateful,' she added. 'Do NOT zoom in on my left eye – it's wonky. Thank you Julian. I paid for the treatment, this isn't an ad. I just love him. It's very possible I'm still a bit sedated. Night night.' Speaking on the How To Fail podcast in 2023 about how she doesn't take too much notice of her appearance, Claudia explained: 'I was born, I think with minus 15 [eyes], so I've never really been able to see my face. It's all guesswork.' Claudia – who is known for her iconic long fringe – went on to say she's had operations because she was 'banging into walls' and she now wears lenses and glasses. However, despite laser eye surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital, Claudia found her vision was still blurry. I had a lens replacement in my left eye because my astigmatism was so bad I was minus 16, but that was 14 years ago,' she said. Claudia explained how she then became long-sighted: 'Then I had a little fiddle with but because I was so short sighted by then fixing it I'm now long sighted so I can't really read any more. Alan Cumming to receive honorary degree from University of St Andrews
Actor Alan Cumming is to receive an honorary degree from the University of St Andrews during a week of graduations for students from almost 90 countries. More than 2,200 students will gather at the University of St Andrews from June 30 for summer graduation ceremonies. Graduates from 88 different countries, including Canada, Australia and Nepal will receive their awards in the Younger Hall from June 30 to July 4. The graduation ceremony season will include nine 'distinguished individuals' honoured for their contributions to sport, politics, science, medicine and the arts. Marvel actor and The Traitors US presenter Alan Cumming will receive an honorary degree on Thursday July 3, while BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner will be presented with one on Friday July 4. Sustainability campaigner Sara Parkin and US golfer Judy Rankin will also receive the accolade during the week. Also recognised will be Russian-American scientist Eugene Koonin and political theorist and feminist writer Professor Cynthia Enloe. There is one ceremony on June 30 at 2pm, while the other ceremonies will occur twice in one day. JLS star rushed to hospital in back of ambulance for medical emergency
JLS star Aston Merrygold has been rushed to hospital in the back of an ambulance. The former X Factor star, 37, shared worrying pictures on his social media, which showed him optimistically sticking his thumb up while on a stretcher in an ambulance, with a drip seemingly attached to his hand. Aston – who found fame in the 00s boyband with JF Gill, Marvin Humes, and Oritsé Williams – said it had 'been an interesting 13hrs' but didn't reveal what caused his hospitalisation.
