CBFC blocks release of Suresh Gopi's Janaki vs State of Kerala, demands title change: ‘Cannot name character who suffered assault after Goddess Sita'

After demanding several cuts in Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par, CBFC has turned its attention to Malayalam film JSK: Janaki vs State of Kerala, starring Union Minister and actor Suresh Gopi. Directed by Pravin Narayanan, the film centers on the legal battle of a woman named Janaki, who fights against the state following an assault. However, the censor board has now objected to the character name's Janaki.
The CBFC stated that the character's name is an alternate name for Goddess Sita and, therefore, should not be associated with a character who undergoes assault in the film. The news was confirmed by the film's director Pravin Narayanan on his Facebook handle. In a post, the director said CBFC has denied a screening certificate for the movie and it would not be released on its scheduled date, June 27.
Meanwhile, Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA)'s General Secretary B Unnikrishnan has reacted to the censor board's objection to the film title, JSK: Janaki vs State of Kerala. Unnikrishnan told PTI, 'It is said by the Board that Goddess Sita's name cannot be given to the woman character who suffered assault.'
He added, 'They have not received any written information in this regard. A show-cause notice is yet to be received.'

Calling CBFC's objection 'strange', Unnikrishnan said, 'Where is the country heading? In this circumstances, it would be tough to choose a name for characters belonging to the Hindu religion, as the majority of them would be epithets of Gods or Goddesses.'
The censor board's objection has raised many eyebrows, including that of Kerala's General Education Minister V Sivankutty who took to his Facebook account to take a dig at CFBC, questioning, 'Censor Board or senseless Board?'
Apart from Suresh Gopi, JSK: Janaki vs State of Kerala also stars Anupama Parameswaran, Shruthi Ramachandran, Divya Pillai, Baiju Santhosh, Kottayam Ramesh and Shobi Thilakan.

Kerala film conclave to be held in Thiruvananthapuram in August

The Kerala Film Policy Conclave, organised by the State government as part of the framing of a policy for the Malayalam film industry, will be held in Thiruvananthapuram on August 2 and 3 this year. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the conclave at a function to be held at the Sankaranarayanan Thampi Hall inside the Legislative Assembly complex here. Minister for Cultural Affairs Saji Cherian will preside over the function. The conclave, which will comprehensively discuss various aspects of cinema, will be attended by representatives of the seventeen states that have formulated the film policy, representatives of the National Film Development Corporation, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Union Ministry of Culture and Tourism, personalities from the Indian film industry as well as international experts, various film organisations and experts in the fields of labour and law. Comprehensive discussions will be held on various issues related to the film sector. Following the conclave, the government aims to publish the draft of the film policy within a month. The film policy committee has till now held a total of 75 meetings with various stakeholders in the industry as part of efforts at formulating the policy. One of the major issues raised by various stakeholders in the meetings was the lack of formal recognition as an industry, due to which regulations are not in place to govern most of the activities in the Malayalam film industry. Following the discussions, the film policy panel outlined thematic areas regarding issues to be taken care of by the different government departments. The key thematic area will be the one related to gender and working conditions in the industry regarding issues to be handled by the Labour and Women and Child Development departments as well as the Human Rights Commission. These include issues related to casting couch, lack of proper implementation of Internal Committees in film sets, disparity in remuneration, threats against dissenting voices, long working hours, lack of women in technical departments, exploitation by agents and substance abuse.

Diljit Dosanjh shares trailer of 'Sardaar Ji 3' featuring Pakistani actress Hania Aamir, faces backlash

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 23 (ANI): Singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh has found himself on the receiving end of a social media backlash after the trailer of his upcoming Punjabi film, 'Sardaar Ji 3', which features Pakistani actress Hania Aamir, dropped online. Sharing the trailer of the horror-comedy franchise on his Instagram on Monday, Diljit announced that the film will release exclusively overseas on June 27. Diljit captioned the trailer post, 'Sardaar Ji 3 releasing 27th June OVERSEAS only. FADH LAO BHOOND DIAN LATTAN.' The comments section of the actor's social media platform quickly turned into a storm of angry reactions with Indian netizens expressing their disappointment over his decision to work with a Pakistani artist, amidst tensions between the two countries. 'May we witness the most embarrassing downfall of Diljit Dosanjh in the history of public embarrassments... a kind of downfall that his PR could never salvage,' wrote one user on X. Another user added, 'As a Punjabi, I am saying this: Diljit Dosanjh has started to think he is above all. He never openly stands for the issues of Punjab and is now even betraying his own industry, which gave him this fame. Banning and unbanning are not in our control, but their artists have legitimately insulted the Punjabi film industry.' One comment read, 'I used to be his fan, but this is unforgivable. And it gives a bad name to us and the Punjab he loves to gloat about.' The controversy comes in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, followed by India's Operation Sindoor on May 7, in which air strikes were carried out on terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Several Pakistani artists, including Hania Aamir, had their social media accounts made no longer accessible in India following the ghastly Pahalgam attack. The trailer of 'Sardaar Ji 3' is currently not on YouTube India but has been shared by Diljit on his Instagram page. (ANI)
