Govt to inspect land denotified for casino firm

The directorate of agriculture has directed the water resources department (WRD) to organise a joint inspection of 3.3 lakh sqm of irrigation land at Dhargalim, which govt has decided to denotify for a casino firm.

The purpose of this inspection is to determine the quality of soil and the type of crops cultivated on that land.
A senior officer of the directorate of agriculture said the department has written an official letter to the WRD to conduct a site inspection.
The officer said that based on the inspection, a detailed report will be sent to agriculture minister Ravi Naik.
Two months after govt's Goa State Amritkal Agriculture Policy, 2025, was introduced to revitalise farming and make the state self-sufficient, chief minister Pramod Sawant-led govt denotified the 3.3 lakh sqm of the Tillari command area at Dhargalim to pave the way for Delta Corp Ltd, a casino gaming company, to set up an integrated resort.
The project, which will come up at the command area of the Tillari irrigation project, comprises three hotels, a convention centre, a multiplex, a retail area, a water park, banquet facilities, and a children's entertainment area among other amenities.
Naik has sought a detailed report from the agriculture secretary. The minister questioned whether the Tillari Irrigation Command Area Authority granted its clearance for the conversion of the land in question.

report, Naik, who was not present at the cabinet meeting that took the decision, in a note moved to the agriculture secretary, said that on Feb 6, 2025, the cabinet approved the Goa State Amritkal Agricultural Policy.
'In terms of the policy, areas under the command of major, medium, and minor irrigation projects are to be banned from being converted for non-agricultural use,' Naik said.
His note added, 'The Times of India has reported a news article under the heading, 'State ignores its agri policy, hands over 3.3L sqm irrigation land to casino firm'.'
The members of the Tillari Irrigation Development Board have urged an immediate Command Areas Development board meeting to discuss govt's decision to denotify the land.

The political rivalry between Naik and Sardesai recently intensified at Friday's BJP karyakarta melava. At the gathering, Naik challenged Sardesai to name a single signature project implemented during his 13-year tenure, even stating his readiness to quit politics if Sardesai could prove he brought any major development project to the constituency. Naik specifically highlighted his own achievements during his two-term tenure as the Fatorda MLA, citing the South Goa district hospital, South Goa collectorate complex, Ravindra Bhavan, and South Goa Planning and Development Authority's market complex as the flagship projects completed under his leadership. Chief Minister will lay foundation stones for various development works at a cost of ₹936 crore it is to mark the decennial celebration of Article 371(J), and he will inaugurate Tribal Utsav in Raichur on June 23, said Basanagouda Daddal, MLA. He was addressing a joint press conference with MP G. Kumar Naik in Raichur on Friday. Mr. Daddal said that the cost of the project for which a foundation stone will be laid and the various development works will be inaugurated is ₹936 crore. 'The Chief Minister will rename Raichur University as Maharshi Valmiki University, inaugurate the exhibition for handicrafts made by tribal communities, and distribute the vehicles and sewing machines sanctioned for eligible men and women during the event,' he said. Mr. Naik said that implementation of Article 371(J) for the Kalyan Karnataka region was a significant step taken by the then UPA government at centre, and therefore, a decennial ceremony will be organised to mark the celebration since it was implemented 10 years ago. Explaining in detail about the works that have already been taken up and going to lay a foundation stone, Mr. Naik said that 185 additional rooms for 27 existing schools, kitchens and toilets at a cost of ₹24 crore. Five new school buildings at a cost of ₹12 crore, 27 community halls at ₹6 crore, construction of CC roads and drainage at ₹6 crore, 24 BT roads at ₹111 crore, six tanks filling and lift irrigation works at ₹289 crore, a bridge cum barrage at ₹152 crore, renovation of 218 temples at ₹21 crore, repair of 12 churches at ₹3 crore, development of 35 masjids, dargahs and Ashurkhan at ₹2.83 crore, a multi-village drinking water project at ₹222 crore, and construction of 36 libraries at a cost of ₹7 crore. DK Suresh elected Bengaluru Milk Union chairman, eyes KMF post

B engaluru: Former Bangalore Rural MP, DK Suresh, brother of deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, was elected unopposed as chairman of Bengaluru Milk Union (Bamul) on Thursday. This marks Suresh's first electoral victory since his defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He secured the Bamul chairmanship after winning a seat on the union's board representing Kanakapura. Alongside Suresh, 10 other Congress-backed candidates had previously won seats, bringing the party's total to 11 out of 14 on the union board. With this strong backing, Suresh submitted his nomination papers for the chairman post and was declared winner without opposition. Sources suggest Suresh is poised to contest the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) chairman post, elections to which are likely in July. KMF oversees 16 milk unions across Karnataka's lucrative dairy industry and wields considerable political clout. However, Suresh's nomination for the KMF post could run into stiff resistance since chief minister Siddaramaiah's camp is backing Malur MLA KY Nanje Gowda. The situation is further complicated by current KMF chairman LBP Bheema Naik's claim that Siddaramaiah had assured him of another term. In fact, Naik, recently met Siddaramaiah regarding a delay in elections of another milk union spanning Raichur, Ballari, and Vijayanagara districts (RBKV). Naik expressed concern that the delay could diminish his support base and ruin his chance of winning again. Speaking to a Kannada news channel, Naik said the Dharwad bench of the high court cleared the way for elections on June 2, following a previous stay order. However, he claimed that the deputy commissioner of Ballari district, who wrote to the Cooperative Election Commissioner on June 12, has not taken steps to conduct the polls. Naik further alleged that some Congress MLAs and cooperative representatives in Ballari are dissatisfied with cooperation minister KN Rajanna. "I tried to contact Rajanna, but he is not answering my calls," Naik said. "Rajanna and I are like brothers. "Some vested interests have given him incorrect information which is why he is delaying polls."
