Kupang couple's Aidiladha preparations disrupted by surprise snake visitor

BALING: An elderly couple in Kampung Bukit Iboi, Kupang, received a nasty shock last night when a King Cobra slithered into their home as they were preparing for the Aidiladha celebration.
Baling Fire and Rescue Station chief Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil said they received a call about the three-metre-long snake at 10.40pm yesterday.
He said the team found the King Cobra behaving aggressively and slithering along a brick wall towards the roof vent.
Their task was further complicated when the snake hid in narrow roof crevices, making it harder to capture.
"Firefighters used specialised equipment to capture the snake, which took about 20 minutes.
"The operation had to be carried out with great caution to prevent the snake from escaping," he said today.
Zulkhairi noted that from Jan 1 until today, the department has received 200 emergency calls - 50 of which involved snake-catching incidents in the district.

Six nabbed at illegal jetty for attempting to cross border

RANTAU PANJANG: Six people were arrested during a routine patrol under Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan after attempting to cross the border illegally via the Gergaji illegal jetty here last night. The group, detained by the General Operations Force (GOF), comprised four foreigners and two locals. GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said the suspects were nabbed around 7pm upon their arrival at the Golok riverbank. "Personnel from the Ninth Battalion GOF spotted two local men, one Thai man and three Thai women at the Gergaji illegal jetty. "Checks revealed that five of the suspects did not possess valid travel documents to enter or exit Malaysia, while one Thai woman had no form of identification," he said. Datuk Nik Ros said five of the suspects were detained under Section 5(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. "The woman arrested without identification, is held under Section 6(1)(c) of the same Act," he added. All six have been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Pasir Mas district police headquarters for further action. The latest arrests bring the total number of people detained for crossing into Malaysia via illegal routes along the Kelantan-Thai border during a two-week period beginning from the recent Aidiladha celebration, to 43.

37 nabbed sneaking across Kelantan-Thai border post-Aidiladha

KOTA BARU: Thirty-seven people have been arrested for crossing into Malaysia via illegal routes along the Kelantan-Thai border during a two-week period beginning from the recent Aidiladha celebration. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the majority of those detained were Malaysians, apprehended by personnel from the General Operations Force (GOF) under Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan. "We have recorded 30 cases involving individuals entering the state through illegal jetties along the border between June 7 and today," he said at a press conference. "Most of them crossed the Golok River, particularly in the Rantau Panjang area." In response to the rise in such cases, Mohd Yusoff said border personnel had been instructed to adopt a stricter stance. "I have directed all personnel stationed at the border to take firm action against those breaking the law. "There will no longer be any warnings — anyone caught using ungazetted routes to cross the border will be arrested," he said. He said that police had identified several routes frequently used for illegal crossings. "We will soon deploy plainclothes personnel to monitor these areas," he added. On a related matter, Mohd Yusoff assured that the border remained secure despite recent unrest in southern Thailand. "So far, the border is under control. Enforcement agencies, including the Marine Police, continue to conduct regular patrols in the area. "We have not received any intelligence from our counterparts across the border regarding the entry of any suspicious people into Kelantan," he added.
