Marc Lore, A-Rod Expected to Take Over Timberwolves Soon, New Arena Plans Coming…

Yahoo03-06-2025

Times are changing for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Fresh off their second-straight Western Conference Finals appearance, the team is headed in a new direction. Glen Taylor, who has owned the franchise since 1994 when he saved it from relocation to New Orleans, will finally transfer majority power to Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez.
Taylor accepted his fate following arbitration hearings earlier this spring. Lore and A-Rod, who have been chomping at the bit to get going — will soon be putting their first official orders of business in motion.

Now that the legal battle for ownership of the Minnesota Timberwolves has been put in the rearview mirror, the last hurdle needing to be overcome is the NBA owners vote, of which Lore needs 2/3 majority to seal this deal.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the new ownership group is expected to be approved easily. And we also know when it will take place. According to a recent report from The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski, the NBA Board of Governors vote for Timberwolves majority ownership will take place in less than a month, 'toward the end of June'.
'Sometime toward the end of June, team sources familiar with the process told The Athletic, the league is expected to hold a final vote to approve Lore and Rodriguez as the new majority owners of the Timberwolves and Lynx.'
Jon Krawczynski – The Athletic
The exact date has not been made known, but the end of June coincides with some important dates on the league calendar. The NBA Draft is scheduled for June 25th. Minnesota holds the 17th and 31st overall selections. Just a few days later, June 30th, free agency opens.
It would behoove the Minnesota Timberwolves to have their new owners assume full power prior to those events taking place. The vote to make the ownership change permanent should go as planned, but until it's cemented in reality both Rodriguez and Lore must wait.

This offseason is a significant one for the Timberwolves. President Tim Connelly could look to go elsewhere, and the roster changes are expected to be significant. Julius Randle, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and Naz Reid are all key players that Minnesota must decide on how they fit into future plans.

Anthony Edwards and his running mates came up short losing 4-1 in the Western Conference Finals for the second year in a row. Finding a blueprint to get beyond that point, and over the hump, will require looks at the roster and coaching staff.
New arena plans underway for Timberwolves
It's not just the roster configuration that new owners Rodriguez and Lore are concerned with. Minnesota's home arena, Target Center, is 35 years old and it needs more than just a facelift. In fact, the plan is to find a new home digs, something that the new owners have made clear will be a priority right away.
'They plan to be much more aggressive with their investment on the business side of the operations, including formulating plans for a new arena, team sources told The Athletic. The partners have openly stated their firm commitment to keeping the team in Minnesota, and team sources reiterated that is the long-term vision for a team that is booming in popularity locally, thanks to their playoff runs the last two seasons.'
Jon Krawcyznski – The Athletic
Multiple different sites and ideas have been floated regarding a new arena. It is something that the franchise must capitalize on while excitement is currently at an all-time high. How the building is funded, where, and what designs look like will all be of significant importance to fans.

Building over the offseason is always a goal for every franchise across the NBA. With such a monumental change at the top of the organization, this one figures to be the most significant in franchise history.
If Lore and Rodriguez can usher in a summer of excitement, and parlay that into a season of success, fans will be waiting in droves to enter the new building whenever its doors open.

Phillies Predicted to Cut Ties With Mick Abel After Aaron Nola News

Phillies Predicted to Cut Ties With Mick Abel After Aaron Nola News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have been fortunate that right-hander Mick Abel has thrown the baseball at the level he has throughout the first few starts of his big league career. Advertisement In his 20.1 innings, the 23-year-old has posted a 2.21 ERA and has struck out 17 hitters. Abel, an Oregon native, has looked the part. However, he realistically only had a chance because of Aaron Nola's injury. If Nola doesn't return to the level that the Phillies are hoping for, or they get bad news on his injury front, it's possible that Abel could still be on the team in the coming months. However, if Andrew Painter comes up when he's expected to, which could be sometime in July, and Nola is healthy, it's tough to find a place for Abel in the rotation. That's why The Athletic recently predicted that they'd cut ties with him, adding that Abel will likely be the Phillies' best trade chip. Jun 10, 2025; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mick Abel (40) throws a pitch during the fourth inning against the Chicago Cubs at Citizens Bank Hartline-Imagn Images 'Perhaps the biggest question the Phillies must answer in the next six weeks, James. A lot of it will depend on Aaron Nola's progress from his various injuries. If the Phillies have doubts about his ability to contribute in August and September, it might compel them to keep Abel. But they know Andrew Painter is coming. And, while Abel has pitched well in the majors, I do think he represents their best trade chip,' they wrote. Jalen Green reportedly determined to improve upon playoff struggles, stay in Houston

Jalen Green continues to be a rumored possibility in trade talks for Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant, and he's coming off an underwhelming 2025 NBA playoffs with the Houston Rockets. Yet, entering his fifth professional season, it doesn't appear that the 23-year-old is looking for a fresh start. Instead, he wants to make amends in Houston. Advertisement Per Kelly Iko of The Athletic: Green, whose name has been connected to Durant and other stars in trade rumors, is determined to improve upon his playoff struggles and wants to stay in Houston, league sources say. Granted, until there is finality on the Durant front, there remains the possibility that 2024-25 was Green's swan song with the Rockets. But if Durant goes elsewhere, or if his trade package to Houston doesn't include Green, it appears both the Rockets and the 6-foot-6 guard are committed to giving things another go. During the 2024-25 regular season, Green was the leading scorer (21.0 points per game) on a Houston squad that finished with the No. 2 record (52-30) in the Western Conference. But in the playoffs versus Golden State, he was just the fourth-leading scorer (13.3 points), and his true-shooting percentage dipped from 54.4% in the regular season to 48.2% against the Warriors. Knicks lost ‘swagger' when they traded Donte DiVincenzo: Magic Johnson

Magic Johnson thinks the Knicks need their swagger back. The Hall of Famer believes New York lost its toughness and edge after trading Donte DiVincenzo to the Timberwolves in the Karl-Anthony Towns deal, which he believes cost the team in the Eastern Conference finals against the Pacers. Advertisement 'The swagger left the Knicks when [DiVincenzo] got traded, and they don't have that swagger again,' Johnson said on ESPN's 'Get Up' on Thursday. 'See, they got nice guys, but they don't have tough, mean guys, and that's what Donte brought to the table.' Donte DiVincenzo with the Knicks in the second round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Johnson said DiVincenzo would have been a perfect answer to Indiana's depth and physicality, which seemingly wore out the Knicks' top-heavy roster over the six-game series. 'I love what Donte brought from the bench when he came on the floor, and New York Knicks fans loved him because he was tough, he was mean, but also he could score,' Johnson said. Advertisement In his one season in New York, DiVincenzo proved to be a volume scorer when needed, with no better example than last season's second-round series against the Pacers, when the Villanova product stepped up to average 22.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists. DiVincenzo's role in that series was elevated with the Knicks ravaged by injury, but the shooting guard was a key offensive contributor all year, and he averaged a career-high 15.5 points in the regular season. Magic Johnson said he thinks 'the swagger left the Knicks' after Donte DiVincenzo was traded. @GetUpESPN/X And the tough, mean persona Johnson speaks of was on display throughout the season, with DiVincenzo never afraid to get into it with opposing players and stand up for his teammates. Advertisement That didn't stop Leon Rose and the Knicks from dealing DiVincenzo and Julius Randle to the Timberwolves for Towns last offseason — a move Johnson seems to think was a mistake, even if New York advanced to its first conference finals in 25 years behind the duo of KAT and Jalen Brunson. The Knicks traded Donte Divincenzo to the Timberwolves as part of a deal for Karl-Anthony Towns. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST '[DiVincenzo] could get you 15 to 25 points when he came off that bench and they missed that, that contribution that he brought to the team,' Johnson added.
