KUALA LUMPUR: Advertising is not facing extinction—it is evolving rapidly, say media industry leaders.
Speaking at the 'Is Advertising Dead?' plenary session during the Digital Media Awards (DMA) 2025 on Wednesday (April 23), Mark Challinor ( pic ), international media advisor for News Media UK, emphasised that advertising can still thrive if approached with the right mindset and tools.
'Advertising success now hinges on a fundamental shift; leaving behind outdated rules and embracing a technology-driven, customer-centric model.
'There are wonderful opportunities in advertising with Artificial Intelligence (AI), allowing for more precise targeting of relevant and new audiences,' he said.
Challinor added that media sales teams and advertisers need to embrace innovation, prioritise customer experience and privacy, and adapt to the evolving landscape.
'The future of advertising lies at the intersection of emerging technologies, ethical standards, and shifting audience expectations,' he said.
Echoing similar sentiments, Marcelo Benez, Chief Commercial Officer of Folha de S.Paulo, said publishers and advertisers to view changing consumer habits as an opportunity.
'In the past, people read the newspaper every day. Today, they read it all day long.
'This is the new reality,' he said.
Benez added that modern audiences demand more engaging, emotionally resonant advertising.
'Brands that can evoke emotion, spark thought, or generate buzz are more likely to achieve lasting impact.
'Audiences are becoming increasingly selective about what they engage with—and where it comes from,' he added.
Challinor also noted that success requires more than just strategy—it requires talent.
'We need solutions-based sales teams and staff with strong technical competencies like digital literacy, proficiency in navigating digital platforms, keeping up with emerging technologies and trends, ability to analyse and interpret data.
'That's how we show we're creative, trustworthy, and in tune with our audience.'
Organised by the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), DMA marks its 17th edition this year since its inception in 2009.
The session examined whether advertising is truly in decline or poised for reinvention, highlighting how publishers can still capture a share of the projected US$818bil in global ad spend in 2025, as forecast by Dentsu.

Rising demand for sustainable biomass products to drive Elridge Energy's growth prospect in FY2025

BIOENERGY-BASED Elridge Energy Holdings Bhd has begun its 1Q FY2025 ended March 31, 2025 with a net profit of RM13.58 mil on the back of RM109.67 mil in revenue that were mainly contributed by customers based in Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia. As the group was only listed on the ACE Market of Bursa Malaysia in August 2024, no year-on-year (yoy) comparative figures from the previous financial year is available. Palm kernel shells (PKS) remain the cornerstone of the group's operations by contributing RM95.81 mil or 87.36% of total revenue while the remaining RM13.87 mil was derived from the trading and manufacturing of wood pellets. 'Our 1Q FY2025 performance reflects a strong and growing demand for sustainable biomass fuel products in international markets,' commented Elridge Energy's executive director and CEO Oliver Yeo. 'We are pleased to maintain our momentum post-listing and deliver healthy earnings growth in line with our strategic direction.' According to Coherent Market Insights, the PKS industry in Asia-Pacific is expected to grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 8.9% from US$308.6 mil (RM1.4 bil) in 2024 to US$366.1 mil (RM1.7 bil) by 2026. The wood pellet market in the region is also forecast to expand at a CAGR of 8.6% to reach USD$12.5 bil (RM57.1 bil) in 2026 from US$10.6 bil (RM48.4 bil) in 2024. 'To support this growing market, we're executing our expansion plan with the development of new manufacturing sites in Pasir Gudang (Johor), Kuantan (Pahang) and Lahad Datu (Sabah),' revealed Yeo. 'These facilities will each house two PKS production lines with a combined annual output of 240,000 metric tonnes per site. The capacity expansion will enhance our ability to secure long-term export contracts and reinforce our position in the regional biomass supply chain.' To-date, a total of RM68.14 mil from the group's initial public offering (IPO) proceeds has been allocated to these projects. The investments form part of Elridge Energy's long-term strategy to capitalise on rising global demand for biomass fuels and to contribute to decarbonisation efforts in energy and industrial sectors. 'With a focused expansion strategy, a solid financial footing and rising demand from international markets, the group remains well-positioned to deliver sustained value to our shareholders and support the global shift towards renewable energy,' added Yeo. At 4.56pm, Elridge Energy was unchanged at 59.5 sen with 2.38 million shares traded, thus valuing the company at RM1.19 bil. – May 27, 2025

Japan rice price falls below US$27 per 5kg for the first time since March

TOKYO (Bernama-Kyodo): The average price of rice in Japan fell below 4,000 yen (US$27) per five kilograms (kg) for the first time in around three and a half months to 3,920 yen, the government said on Monday, with increased distribution of stockpiles likely helping to drive down prices. According to Kyodo News Agency, during the seven days through June 15, the average price of rice sold at supermarkets across the nation fell by 256 yen per five kg from the previous week, dropping to the 3,000 yen range for the first time since the week ended March 2, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Farm Minister Shinjiro Koizumi told reporters that the drop was due in part to the release of additional rice reserves, stating that "a clear message from the government is proving effective." The market share of blended rice, including reserve rice, rose six percentage points to 50 per cent. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has vowed to bring the average retail price of five kg of rice down to the 3,000 yen range by the end of June. Last year, a household consumed 60.20 kg of rice, according to government consumer spending data. Even after the latest fall, the average price of rice remains nearly double that of a year earlier. Japan's core consumer prices in May rose 3.7 per cent from a year earlier, marking the biggest increase in more than two years, with rice prices setting a fresh record for the eighth consecutive month with a 101.7 per cent jump due to a supply shortage. On Monday, meanwhile, measures were put into place prohibiting the reselling of rice bought at retail stores to ensure that consumers have access to rice at stable prices. Under the ban, those who sell rice at a higher price than they paid face up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 1 million yen (US$6,767), or both. -- BERNAMA-KYODO

Premier urges China's Jiangsu to embrace ‘higher development expectations'

As Beijing looks to shore up China's economic growth amid mounting challenges, Premier Li Qiang has called on Jiangsu province, a key manufacturing hub on the country's east coast, to step up its efforts in technology, trade and consumption. During a three-day visit to the province from Monday, Li emphasised the importance of embracing innovative development, stimulating effective demand, fostering entrepreneurship, and deepening reform and opening up to support China's sustained economic growth. 'Jiangsu has a solid economic foundation and strong capabilities, but it also faces higher development expectations,' Li said, calling on the province's officials and residents to stay focused on economic growth and shoulder greater responsibility in meeting the challenges facing the broader economy, Xinhua reported on Wednesday. In the first quarter of this year, Jiangsu's gross domestic product rose 5.9 per cent year on year to 3.31 trillion yuan (US$460.5 billion), closely trailing top-ranked Guangdong's 3.35 trillion yuan, which was up 4.1 per cent. One of China's most advanced manufacturing provinces, Jiangsu has been tasked by Beijing with playing a leading role in stabilising growth amid sluggish domestic demand and growing external pressure from increased US tariffs. At a factory that makes machinery, Li highlighted the need to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence and clean energy technologies to upgrade traditional industries and keep pace with global manufacturing trends. At a home appliance manufacturer involved in a government-backed consumer goods trade-in scheme, Li encouraged the development of more high-quality, customised products to unlock consumer potential. 'China has a vast and growing market, and we welcome businesses from around the world to invest and operate here,' Li said, pledging more policy support and services to ensure a favourable environment for foreign companies. While inspecting the Jiangsu-Central Asia Centre, a regional service platform for the Belt and Road Initiative trade development strategy, the premier called for better use of China-Europe freight trains and cross-border e-commerce to deepen trade ties with Central Asia. Wrapping up his trip at the construction site for the 11.5 billion yuan Nanjing North Station project – which will be the provincial capital's largest railway station when it is completed – Li urged more use of advanced materials and technologies and better industrial planning to maximise its long-term impact. His remarks echoed comments made by President Xi Jinping in March during a meeting with deputies from Jiangsu at the annual meeting of China's top legislature. Xi urged the province to take on a leading role in innovation, regional cooperation and the pursuit of common prosperity. - SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST
