Down to Business: Relief on a customer's face the fun part for Naperville junk removal company owner
Business: The Junk Removal Dudes
Address: Naperville
Phone/website: 331-444-7070; www.TheJunkRemovalDudes.com
Owner: Alex Broches, 37, of Sycamore
Years in business: 12
What does your business do? 'We are the Dumpster alternative. We do all the work. You point. Before you can blink, the dump truck is gone with all the stuff. You don't have a Dumpster sitting outside for a week,' Broches said.
Why did you start this company? 'I started the business as a way to make extra money. I graduated from (Northern Illinois Unversity), had an incredibly hard time finding a job. I was a geography major, which has nothing to do with anything I'm doing now. I was delivering pizzas, doing landscaping, some Internet businesses.
'I borrowed my grandpa's SUV. It was a busted-up Ford Explorer, on its last legs. I gave him my old SUV because it couldn't handle a trailer and his was more durable. I told him, 'I have this idea, I know it sounds weird, but I'd pick up junk for extra money.' He said, 'Yes,' because in his retirement years he had fun Dumpster diving. … I made a wooden trailer with my own hands. Started off, here and there, a part-time thing.
'It was me and a friend. The first month we made a couple hundred bucks. … My grandfather (the late Chris Deligiannis) was the only person in my friends and family who didn't laugh at me. He encouraged me.'
When did you know you made the right move? 'The game-changer was I had a customer in Naperville. It looked like a barn, out by Costco. A gentleman called me, he saw my little sign on the corner that read 'junk removal.' … I threw him a number, $6,000. He jumped at it. I know now that should have been a $10,000 job. After several days of back-breaking work, I was thinking, 'I'm getting the hang of it.''
How big is your fleet? 'We have three new Dodge Ram trucks to do estimates. We have four dump trucks we use with a fifth on the way.'
How many employees do you have? 'Twelve. Once we get that fifth truck, it will go up to 17. I was on the truck seven days a week the first 10 years. … I have destroyed both my ankles. My lower left back is messed up. I've had a hernia. … Now, I'm off the truck.'
How does it work with a new client? 'They send us photos or a video. One of our managers gets back to them with an estimate. If it's a hoarding situation or commercial, we send someone out to quote it. A couple things in your garage, it's pretty quick.'
What's your area? 'Rockford. Crystal Lake. Schaumburg. DeKalb County. McHenry County. … Ninety percent of our business is Naperville and Aurora. … When I started, it was two to three (jobs) a month. Now, 300 to 400 a month. … We can get it bigger. It's just getting warmed up.'
What do you like about your work? 'I enjoy seeing the relief on customers' faces. Financially, it's better than what I was doing before. I have met so many wonderful, great clients, many I'm friends with. A lot of employees, I've seen them get married, have kids, buy their first houses. That, to me, is so special.'
Can you walk me through a job? 'We call you an hour before we show up. They're ready. … We do everything. Fridge? Gone. Pool table? Gone. Crawlspace with 80 years of stuff? Emptied. … We sweep up, leave things spotless. … One thing I'm proud of is our reviews on Google. People say how crazy it is, how everything is done the next day.'
Any memorable stories? 'Moving couches, sometimes mystery cell phones fall out. … Our workers have dumped boxes at the landfill, a bunch of guns and drugs fell out. … We once cleaned up an island in the Fox River for the Fox Valley Park District. There were hundreds of shopping carts. Homeless people who lived there had moved. … A fun job was 700 to 800 basketballs. The workers would shoot them into the truck.'
Any competition? 'There's quite a bit. … It forces me to step up my game.'
Where do items go? 'Goodwill. Salvation Army. Churches. What we don't donate goes to a landfill.'
What's your advice for someone starting a business? 'You have to figure out how to bring so much value to the customer to the point where they tell everybody. If you do that, you're going to be successful. Stop focusing on being rich right away. That does not work.'

Costco's Kirkland Lager Is One Of World's Best Beers, Say Competition Judges
Costco's Kirkland Signature Helles-Style Lager has earned top medals at two of the world's most prestigious beer competitions. Most recently it took home silver at the World Beer Cup Phealan Robinson One of the best helles lagers anywhere on Earth is Costco's Kirkland Signature Helles-Style Lager, judges at the World Beer Cup ruled recently, and it's not the first prestigious award the beer has won. The Kirkland Signature Hellles is brewed by Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon. Though Deschutes is one of the largest craft breweries in the U.S., its Helles-style lager was not traditionally one of its better-known beers. In fact, the lager, which was then called Prinz Crispy, was an obscure small-batch offering until it won gold at the 2023 Great American Beer Festival. That win helped lead to a collaboration between Costco and Deschutes to ramp up production of the beer and rename it, but the recipe remained unchanged. Today, the beer's combination of light, malt-forward character and approachability is continuing to earn impressive awards. The lager took home the silver medal in the highly competitive Helles Lager category at this year's World Beer Cup. As Peter Skrbek, Deschutes' CEO, told me in a video call, it is one thing to win an award for a beer brewed on a small scale but 'it's another thing when you have a scaled-up production beer that's also taking down medals.' The Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup are the two most prestigious beer competitions in the U.S. and, arguably, the world. Many of the beers that medal at each festival have limited distribution and are sometimes only available at the taproom at the brewery where they were produced. Kirkland Lager on the other hand, is an award-winning beer that is sold at every Costco that can legally sell private-label beer. It costs $13.99 per 12-pack. Costco's Kirkland Signature Helles-Style Lager has won two of the most coveted competition medals in craft beer. Phealan Robinson A few years back, Robin Johnson, Deschutes' head brewer, was looking for a beer to enter into the Great American Beer Festival. 'He's like, 'What if we really went after lager and really went competitive on lager?' Skrbek said. 'So he spent a ton of time developing this Helles recipe.' The initial beer was brewed at Deschutes' 10-barrel brewing system at its Bend brewpub. The goal was a limited-edition beer for competitions, not wide distribution. 'There was never an intent of this beer being a commercial beer, in part because, ironically, the cost of making it, because of the raw ingredients, was extremely high,' Srkbek said. Costco has carried Deschutes beer for years. In a meeting between the Deschutes team and Russ York, a Costco buyer, they began to discuss doing something for the Kirkland Signature brand. 'I said that we would like to do something that was NOT an IPA,' York explains in an email to me. 'I felt our members needed something more sessionable and refreshing. IPAs are everywhere, and everyone has their favorite.' Srkbek had just the right beer in mind. 'I was like, 'Well, man, you know, we just won this gold medal for this beer that we have really no big plan for commercially. How awesome would it be to introduce this gold medal-winning beer to members?' York liked the idea and was completely sold as soon as he tasted the beer. 'I loved it because it had the refreshing taste of a light beer, but it had substance,' York wrote. 'With standard domestic light beers, it just quenches your thirst, not leaving an impression. But the lager does both.' A Craft Beer Available in Bulk To brew the rebranded Kirkland Signature Helles-Style Lager, Deschutes moved production of Prinz Crispy from its 10-barrel system to its 150-barrel production brewery. Producing such large quantities of beer itself wasn't difficult, Srkbek said, but sourcing ingredients and handling the distribution logistics at the scale necessary wouldn't have been possible without Costco's help. York declined to share sales numbers. 'I can say that it is selling quite well and actually did more than we anticipated, given it launched in the off-season for this style of beer—winter,' he wrote. Srkbek couldn't offer any sales numbers either but did say the beer has impacted overall U.S. demand for Tettnang hops, which are a key part of its recipe. 'We basically consumed the entire domestic Tettnang crop last year, which is an insane thought. And as a result, we have more farmers planting Tettnang,' Srkbek said. Despite that scale, Srkbek is proud that the quality of that beer has not slipped: a view that was validated when the beer took home silver at the World Beer Cup. 'The cool thing there is that it is the production beer. It's not a different batch. It's right out of the same batch that went to members and into the warehouses at Costco.' Did you buy a coveted Costco gold bar last year? Here's how much it's worth today amid soaring market prices
You may have struck gold — quite literally. Costco customers who purchased a gold bar last year are now finding the item soaring in value thanks to increased demand. Since the retail company began selling these bars in 2023, they've been a draw for customers, as investors historically tend to turn to gold during times of geopolitical instability, inflation and concern over the US dollar. According to CNBC, gold traded around $3,390 per ounce as of Tuesday morning, about 45% higher than it was at this time last year and near a recent record high. In June 2024, the listed purchase price for a one-ounce gold bar at Costco was $2,399.99. The spot price as of June 17, 2025, was $3,390, which is an unrealized gain of $990 and a 41.3% percentage increase. If you bought the bar of gold last year, you might be considering selling it for a profit — but it's not that simple. The spot price is a benchmark for price negotiation, but sellers typically receive about 5-10% less than that, depending on where and how they sell their gold, Jon Ulin, a certified financial planner based in Boca Raton, Florida, told CNBC. 'I would avoid private buyers or marketplaces like eBay or Facebook Marketplace,' Ulin shared. 'You're dealing with a high-value item and there's a risk of encountering less-than-reputable individuals.' Meanwhile, brick-and-mortar bullion dealers offer in-person evaluations and immediate payment — and may pay 1-5% below the spot price, which is often more than pawn shops offer, according to a 2024 Wall Street Journal report. Regardless, it's important to vet potential buyers on platforms such as Yelp, Google or the Better Business Bureau to help avoid lowball offers or scams. Any profits made from selling gold can also be taxed at a higher rate than other investments since the IRS typically classifies physical gold as a collectible, according to CNBC. A 'collectible' classification means that federal long-term capital gains can be taxed at a rate up to 28%, and if it's sold within one year, profit is taxed as ordinary income, which could lead to an even higher rate depending on the seller's tax bracket. In May, Costco restricted purchases on the coveted gold bars, limiting customers to up to two bars with only one transaction per membership every 24 hours. Around the same time, a finance influencer who purchased one of the retailer's gold bars sold the nugget nearly a year later for a $600 in profit. Humphrey Yang had reportedly purchased the one-ounce bar for $2,359 from Costco in April 2024 and sold it in March 2025 at the bullion dealer Witter Coin in San Francisco for $2,955.42. 3 Big Numbers: Costco's fueling ambitions
This story was originally published on C-Store Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily C-Store Dive newsletter. 3 Big Numbers is a weekly column that looks at a few key details from around the c-store industry. While Costco has offered gas alongside some stores since 1995, news last week that it plans to open its first standalone gas station drew a lot of attention. The location in Mission Viejo, California, is expected to feature a 17,185-square-foot gas canopy with 40 fueling positions. It's unclear if Costco is planning to test more such locations, but if it does, the impact on c-stores, which sell about 80% of all fuel as things stand, could be significant. In this week's '3 Big Numbers,' we dig into why Costco's latest fuel announcement is such a big one for the convenience retail industry. The average difference between Costco fuel prices and market rates in California. One of the main reasons so many people fuel up at Costco is the members-only pricing. Like the fueling sites offered at its warehouses, the standalone gas station will also require customers to be Costco members — which means it will likely share that pricing perk as well. How much of a discount are we talking here? The Oil Price Information Service (OPIS) reported that the average difference between Costco prices and market price for gas in California was 53 cents. For customers seeking out lower prices, 53 cents per gallon is a big deal. Separate OPIS data showed that the average fuel markup in the U.S. was less than 40 cents in 2024, so if Costco starts putting more standalone gas stations in areas where a full store wouldn't make sense, convenience retailers could face a big new threat. The number of Costco gas stations offering expanded hours. While its standalone gas station is the new, eye-catching model, Costco has also been making the gas stations alongside its stores more customer friendly by expanding fueling hours. The company announced in a March earnings call that its gas stations would be opening an hour early, and some would be closing an hour later as well. 'We did see some demand from the commuters, both at the early hours and the evening hours, so I think that that's going to be a real benefit to those folks,' said President and CEO Ron Vachris during the company's Q2 earnings call in March. The expanded hours were one of several factors credited with recently fueling two of its highest-ever weeks for gallons sold. The number of paid Costco members. How many customers might be attracted to an expanded Costco gas offering? The retailer has 79.6 million paid members. While that's the global total, more than 600 of the company's 905 warehouses are in the U.S. If membership is proportional, then there are at least 54 million paid Costco members in the U.S. That means about one in seven U.S. residents is a card-carrying Costco customer. While Costco's warehouse locations may not be convenient for regular fill-ups for many of those customers, an expansion of this standalone gas station concept could quickly change that.
