Two stone quarries in Tiruppur to be penalised for mining beyond limit

TIRUPPUR: The district collector has ordered the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) of Tiruppur to impose fines on two stone quarries in Kodangipalayam for mining beyond the permitted limits, thus violating norms.
A taluk-level task force inspection revealed that both quarries had mined minerals beyond the permitted limit. In particular, Power Readymix, one of the private quarries, has mined 2.81 lakh cubic metre of stone illegally.
Sources said District Collector T Christuraj received a complaint from farmers that minerals were being mined illegally by two private quarries, named Power Readymix and SA Ganesan, in Kodangipalayam village in the Palladam taluk of Tiruppur district, beyond the permitted limit. Based on the complaint, the collector ordered the taluk-level Task Force to inspect the said quarries and that was done at the end of March.
The inspection revealed that 2.81 lakh cubic metre of stones and 36,634 cubic metre of gravel had been mined in the Power Readymix quarry, more than the amount permitted by the government. Further, it was also revealed that 7,434 cubic metre of gravel had been mined in SA Ganesan quarry, exceeding the permitted limit.
After the Palladam tahsildar submitted a report to the District Collector, the latter ordered the RDO to impose appropriate fines against the two quarries.
T Christuraj, in his order, dated April 29, said, "Appropriate penalty action should be taken against the two quarry owners who mined minerals in excess of the permitted amount as per Rule 36-A of the Tamil Nadu Minor Minerals Concession Rules, 1959, and GO (Ms).No.170 Industries (MMC-2) Department dated: 05.08.2020. And a report regarding this should be sent."
The farmers postponed the protest they had already announced in view of the collector's order.
R Sathish Kumar, State Secretary of the Legal Awareness Wing of Tamil Nadu Farmers Protection Association, said, "The licence period for these quarries expired in 2016. But even after that they had been operating and mining minerals illegally. We had planned to protest in front of the RDO office on April 30, demanding action against both quarries. We have now postponed the protest due to the order served against the both quarries by the collector. On the order of the collector, a fine should be imposed on both quarries immediately. In addition, the government should take action against all quarries operating illegally."

Musiri RDO killed in accident on NH

1 2 Trichy: Aramutha Devasena, 55, revenue divisional officer (RDO) of Musiri, was killed in a road accident on Thursday after her official vehicle collided with a govt bus and rammed an earthmover on Trichy-Karur national highway (NH) on the outskirts of the city. Condoling the death, chief minister M K Stalin announced that the govt would disburse Rs1 crore as personal accident insurance cover, and Rs10 lakh to the RDO's family members as solatium from his public relief fund (CMPRF) and another Rs5 lakh under the family security fund. Police said Devasena was travelling in her official vehicle to Trichy city to participate in a govt event. The vehicle was driven by her official driver V Prabakar, 51. Around 11.45am, as the vehicle was approaching Kadiyakurichi near Jeeyapuram, it collided with a TNSTC bus coming in the opposite direction. Driver Prabakar lost control of the vehicle and it further rammed an earthmover parked on the left side of the highway for repair work. Eyewitness said the speeding govt vehicle came to a sudden halt after ramming the heavy machinery. The RDO succumbed to head injuries on the spot, with her body stuck in the mangled remains of the vehicle. Driver Prabakaran sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Trichy MGMGH. Locals said that the accident spot was one of the widest stretches of the accident-prone Trichy-Karur NH, as vehicles utilise such spacious stretches to accelerate and overtake. Around 32km-long stretch of Trichy-Karur NH81 is one of the top 100 accident-prone roads identified by road safety and state transport authority of the govt. In 2024, the stretch recorded 112 accidents and 44 fatalities. Citing the RDO's death, locals asked the district administration to widen the narrow highway. Jeeyapuram police have registered a case.

RDO of Musiri killed in road accident near Tiruchi, CM expresses condolences

A woman Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) of Musiri in Tiruchi district was killed in a road accident on the Tiruchi-Karur national highway near Kadiyakurichi bus stop in Jeeyapuram police station limits on Thursday. RDO Aramudha Devasena, 50, was travelling in the official vehicle towards Tiruchi from Kulithalai when the vehicle and a Tiruppur-bound government bus from Tiruchi that came in the opposite direction collided. The RDO's vehicle went out of control and hit a backhoe loader that was stationed nearby for repairs. The officer was killed on the spot. Police said the RDO's vehicle was completely damaged in the collision. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, in a statement, expressed shock over the death of the RDO in the accident. Expressing his condolences to the officer's family, Mr. Stalin said ₹1 crore under the personal accident insurance cover announced by the State government would be given to the family. Further, ₹10 lakh would be provided to the family from the General Relief Fund and another ₹5 lakh from the Family Security Fund.
