Steve Borthwick backs George's leadership qualities for co-captaincy role

By Phil Campbell at Pennyhill Park
Steve Borthwick has backed Jamie George's leadership qualities after restoring him to England captaincy duties alongside George Ford.
The England head coach replaced George as skipper in January of this year in favour of Maro Itoje, a decision the hooker admitted came out of the blue.

However, with Itoje away on Lions duty where he will captain the touring side in Australia, Borthwick has gone back to the tried-and-tested with George set to lead the team for the game against a French XV on Saturday, working as a co-captain with Ford.
Borthwick explained that the two dovetail nicely in their leadership styles and having both in the joint position was 'the right way to go'.
'He's (George) really clear from a tactical point of view. He's got a brilliant voice. He has a fantastic feel and manner with people,' said Borthwick.
'Both of them are phenomenal players and both are brilliant, experienced leaders, both at club and international level.

'Whether they've been captains or vice-captains or not, they are leaders and they are role models for the rest of the players.
'I decided that was the right way to go, to have two great figureheads for this team.
'This week training, they complement each other superbly well, as you'll know from their different styles and different positions they play.
'That then gives us a figurehead in the forwards, a figurehead in the backs, leading the team.
'I've been really pleased with how it's gone.'
Ford and George come into the tour as two of the most experienced members of the squad, with a combined 200 England caps between them, having both missed out on selection for the Lions in May.

George, whilst not making the 38-man squad, has clearly remained in Farrell Snr's thinking and was called up to train with the Lions out in Portugal last week due to the absence of Dan Sheehan and Ronan Kelleher, both of whom were on Leinster duty in the URC Final.
Now back with England, the hooker reflected with pride on his third different Lions camp, despite the initial disappointment of missing out.
'I loved it,' he said.
'Me and George [Ford] are in the same boat. I was very disappointed not to be on the Tour in the first place, but to be given any opportunity to go in and show what you're about a little bit… It was a great opportunity for me to go out there. They're setting themselves up very nicely for a successful tour.'

And with England set to fly out to Argentina, the opponents of the Lions on Friday evening in Dublin, George revealed he was keenly observing everything that was going on, partly to help when he was back with his national side.
He added: 'There's a little bit more in it because they're playing Argentina tomorrow night and that's where our tour is going to be. As we were analysing in the Lions meetings, I was making sure I was making extra notes just to bring back about what I've seen. I think it's important.'
There is scope for the England squad to change should the Lions come calling, with Jack van Poortvliet currently away as scrum-half cover for the side with Jamison Gibson-Park not fully fit.
Borthwick remained tight-lipped about any potential return to the international fold for Owen Farrell, however, after he re-signed for Saracens this week following one season at Racing 92 in France, making him eligible for international duty once more.

'I think Owen has been very clear,' said Borthwick.
'He's happy to be home and he hasn't made any discussion around his future other than just wanting to get his family settled back in Hertfordshire.
'My focus is on these guys here.'
On the timescale regarding Van Poortvliet's return, Borthwick said he is due to be back next week but admitted that date could be subject to change and that the Leicester scrum-half would be fully supported if that were to be the case.
'Jack might well be at the game on Saturday afternoon, but if that changes from a Lions perspective, then we fully support Jack,' he added.

'We've also spoken very publicly that we want as many England players in that Lions squad as possible.
'There might be situations were other England players join the squad in which case we'll be delighted for our players to do that.'

Brown out of top 10 again as Wood claims provision pole

Will Brown's horror qualifying run has continued, missing out on the top 10 for a third race at the Darwin Triple Crown. The reigning Supercars champion's 11th-place result in qualifying for race 19 gives Triple Eight teammate Broc Feeney the chance to extend his 143-point lead at the top of the standings even further on Sunday. Walkinshaw Andretti United's Ryan Wood secured preliminary pole with a lap time of one minute 6.071 seconds, a full 16-hundredths of a second over surprise packet Macauley Jones. The gap from Jones in second to Chaz Mostert in 10th was just 11-hundredths of a second. Jones will jump second last in the top-10 shootout as he looks to better his previous best qualifying result of fourth. WOW 🤯WHO PICKED THAT TOP 10?!#RepcoSC #Supercars — Supercars (@supercars) June 22, 2025 "We made some pretty big changes. I wasn't really happy with the car, it's just very finicky to get right," the Brad Jones Racing man told Fox Sports. "The window is very small so we've tried to open up that window and it just felt good out of the gate, really. "And when you're confident out of the gate, you're confident to just find those little extra half-10th areas and that's kind of where the improvements came from." Feeney was third, two-thousandths of a second behind Jones, and ahead of Jack Le Brocq and Grove Racing teen sensation Kai Allen. Allen has been in the best form of his rookie Supercars season at Hidden Valley Raceway this weekend, snagging a maiden podium with a third-place finish on Saturday. Brad Jones driver Andre Heimgartner was sixth, while Anton De Dasquale overcame clutch issues in the first qualifying session to take seventh spot. Matt Payne, Cam Hill and Mostert rounded out the 10. Alongside Brown, Brodie Kostecki and Tickford Racing drivers Cam Waters and Thomas Randle were the big names to miss out on the shootout. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Supercars (@supercarschampionship) Jaxon Evans was ruled out of Sunday's action after his Brad Jones Racing Camaro suffered heavy damage in a crash on the first lap of Saturday's opening race. Drivers return for the top-10 shootout to determine the final grid at 12.05pm (AEST), before race 19 gets underway at 3.10pm. RACE 19 QUALIFYING RESULTS: 1. Ryan Wood (Walkinshaw Andretti United) 2. In a new competition format, the eight finalists started by skating two runs in the playoffs round, with the top four riders battling for medals in the final. All eyes were on global skateboarding phenomenon Arisa Trew as the winner of the past two editions of the event at X Games. Continuing her dominance, Trew held the top spot in Osaka from the playoffs to the final runs. Barging into the final with a perfect run featuring two 540 variations and technical lip tricks, Trew locked in the gold medal with a score of 84.66 points on her first attempt. But she was far from finished: Taking her final run as a victory lap, she raised the bar by combining alley-oop backside 540, backside Judo air, frontside stalefish, backside 540 melon, kickflip Indy, Madonna, Indy 360 fakie, switch McTwist, Cab frontside 360 stalefish, frontside crooked fakie and frontside Half Cab noseslide revert for 87.66 points and the gold medal. "I'm just so happy. Skating with all the girls was super fun. Everyone is pushing it to the next level. And just being in the final with those girls was amazing," said Monster Energy's Trew upon claiming gold in Osaka. On the strength of earning her sixth X Games gold medal, Trew now ties the record for most X Games gold medals in women's skateboarding with Brazil's Leticia Bufoni. And Trew is far from done making history: Watch for her on Sunday in the Women's Skateboard Park final, dropping in as the defending champion. Also rising to the podium, Monster Army rider Asahi Kaihara claimed the silver medal in front of a hometown crowd. After losing the handle on her first run of the final, it all came down to the final run for Kaihara. Putting it all on the line, Kaihara landed a stylish run featuring huge frontside body varial benihana, Madonna, backside Saran Wrap, kickflip Indy, backside method air, frontside nosegrind lipslide, frontside noseblunt, feeble grind fakie, fakie frontside pop shove-it stalefish, frontside body varial tailgrab, and lien tailslide scoring 79.00 points for second place. Kaihara now owns three X Games medals (one silver and two bronze). BMX Park: French Team Rider Anthony Jeanjean Claims Bronze as First X Games Medal The podium spots continued in the competitive BMX Park final. After a grueling playoffs round, multiple BMX Park World Champion, Anthony Jeanjean claimed bronze as his first X Games medal in the final. With everything on the line in his second and final run, Jeanjean held it together and delivered, earning his spot on the podium. A perfect run featuring a 720 barpsin, double tailwhip, barspin, opposite tailwhip, flair barspin, superman seat grab, 360 downside tailwhip, flair double tailwhip, and alley-oop 540 flair earned 82.00 points and third place. Men's Skateboard Vert: Tom Schaar Claims Bronze as 15th X Games Medal Energy levels inside Kyocera Dome stadium were high for the Men's Skateboard Vert event. In the session featuring eight of the world's best vertical skateboarders, Tom Schaar dropped in as a podium favorite and previous gold medalist in the discipline. Schaar now owns 15 X Games medals (three gold, four silver, and eight bronze). He will be back for Men's Skateboard Park and Skateboard Vert Best Trick on Sunday! BMX Park Best Trick: Ryan Williams Soars to Victory, Kevin Peraza Clinches Bronze Progression was the name of the game in the Dave Mirra BMX Park Best Trick event, as eight of the sport's most innovative riders attacked the course with their latest trick creations. After a 30-minute session, Team Monster Energy claimed another victory as well as a podium spot in front of the high-energy crowd. Leading the charge, Ryan Williams unveiled one of his notorious trick creations to take the victory. A technical frontflip flair tailwhip on the quarterpipe earned 'R Willy' his second gold medal in the BMX Park Best Trick discipline, and the crowd went wild! "From the start to the finish, I was trying to get my trick, but all the boys just started throwing down left and right. Everyone just kept sending it, and I thought, there's no way I'm going to be able to hang on to this. So stoked it worked out!" said Monster Energy's Williams upon claiming Best Trick gold in Osaka. Williams now owns 11 X Games medals (Nine gold and two silver). He has won X Games gold medals in four different disciplines. Also claiming a medal for the team, Kevin Peraza emerged from the progression session in the bronze medal position by landing a never-been-done-in-competition trick: Taking his skills to the large centerpiece box obstacle, Peraza finessed a flair downwhip to fakie, landing backwards to increase the difficulty for third place. "It's crazy. Most of us came into this knowing that we have another major X Games next week in the States. Should we roll the dice, should we try something? Or should we keep it clean and healthy? But the course was perfect, so why not get it done now. The crowd was so good, and the energy was great," said Monster Energy's Peraza upon claiming bronze in Osaka. Peraza now owns 12 X Games medals (seven gold, three silver, and two bronze) Moto X Best Trick: Australia's Ben Richards Claims Silver Medal as Youngest Competitor A big first day at X Games Osaka 2025 ended with a major upset in the Moto X Best Trick final. In a field of record-setting athletes and multiple X Games champions, Ben Richards dropped in as the youngest competitor and clinched silver as his first career X Games medal. On his first run of the final, Richards secured his podium spot by landing an ultra-rare handlebar hop variation known as Special Flip – performing a 360 body varial in his seat while in the air – for 91.00 points and the silver medal. Today's silver marks the first X Games medal for Richards in what is now his fourth appearance in the event. Richards' closest competition was no other than the most decorated rider in Moto X Best Trick, Jackson Strong. On his first run of the final, Strong put down a technical frontflip seat grab Indy for 90.00 points and the bronze medal, boosting his record-setting medal count to 18 total. Strong now owns 18 X Games medals (eight gold, six silver, and four bronze). Closely finishing outside of podium contention, Japanese style icon Taka Higashino stoked the hometown crowd with a classic performance and finished in fourth place. His highest-scoring trick of the final, a Rock Solid Indy Flip, earned 86.66 points. That's it for day one! Stay tuned for more X Games Osaka 2025! NRL fans all say the same about Latrell Mitchell as Craig Bellamy caught in wild act

NRL fans have been left in disbelief at the effort from Latrell Mitchell and an injury-hit Rabbitohs having pushed Melbourne Storm to golden point as Craig Bellamy was seen losing his temper in the coaching box. The Storm entered the clash against South Sydney Rabbitohs as heavy favourites with the likes of Harry Grant and Cameron Munster backing up from Queensland's State of Origin win. And Grant ducked over the try line after only a few moments, before Jahrome Hughes scored to send shockwaves through the Rabbitohs team. The Storm looked like they could run up a cricket score against the Rabbitohs with Wayne Bennett's side missing a host of stars after a horror run of injuries for the club. However, Mitchell showed why he is one of the most feared players in the game having put on a masterclass to drag the Rabbitohs from the brink and into the contest. Mitchell set up three tries for Alex Johnston with similar cutout passes as the Storm failed to contain the Rabbitohs fullback. But it was the fourth try to Tyrone Munro that left fans in awe. The Storm had just taken the lead 24-20 after Tyran Wishart scored following a sensational solo run from Sua Fa'alago. The Rabbitohs appeared to have run out of steam with the Storm holding them out with a few minutes left. But the Rabbitohs managed to get the ball back after a Storm mistake with five minutes to go. Charging down the field, Latrell got the ball 40 metres out from the Storm try line and noticed Ryan Papenhuyzen was out of position. The fullback put in a long grubber behind the defensive line and it bounced up nicely for Munro. The play levelled the score at 24-all, but Mitchell wasn't able to slot the conversion from the sideline. Unfortunately for the Rabbitohs, Papenhuyzen slotted home the winning drop goal during golden point to end a valiant effort from a battered and bruised South Sydney side. Rabbitohs centre Jack Wighton was full of praise for his side after the game. "We fought right to the end there but fell short," Wighton said. While they lost the game, the praise belonged to Johnston and Mitchell. Fans were in awe of Mitchell's ability to stand up when his team needs him the most with the NSW Blues star backing up after a tough Origin appearance. Mitchell is also going a long way to shut down his critics that doubted he was the best option for fullback at the Rabbitohs. Latrell Mitchell really is a 1 of 1. — The SuperCoach Whisperer (@SCWhisperer) June 21, 2025 Latrell Mitchell just doing Latrell Mitchell things. #NRLSouthsStorm — Lachlan Jeffery (@LachlanJeffery) June 21, 2025 Latrell Mitchell is the best rugby league player in the world. All other opinions are incredibly false. #nrl — ColaFur (@cola_fur) June 21, 2025 While the Rabbitohs managed to claw their way back into the contest with a few minutes left, Bellamy was left fuming. The Storm were uncharacteristically ill-disciplined in the final 20 minutes against South Sydney and turned over the ball a number of times. With the Storm leading 24-20 with five minutes left, Melbourne lost the ball pushing the past through the hands of the outside backs. This handed the Rabbitohs the ball and an attempt to level the game. And the broadcast panned up to coach Bellamy who was unleashing what appeared to be a tirade into the walkie talkie after the error. Fans were left stunned and worried for the Storm players who were potentially in for one of Bellamy's stern talks in the dressing room. While Bellamy cut a more relaxed figure after the game, fans were left stunned at the coaching box blow-up. Forget this game - Craig Bellamy is putting on an absolute fireworks display in the coach's box tonight. Seriously, he scares the shit out of me. You wouldn't go in the sheds at halftime. #NRLSouthsStorm — Ross Martin (@RossMartin1960) June 21, 2025 Can we just get a coach camera in the top right of the broadcast the entire game. Would love to see Craig Bellamy on screen 24/7 — Xero (@Xero__AU) June 21, 2025 RELATED: Tigers fans call out Marshall over bizarre snub of star as issue answered Raiders stars in stunning move for Ricky Stuart and son after tough week While Bellamy was left utterly frustrated with his team's performance in victory, he reserved plenty of praise for Bennett's side who were valiant in defeat. "We lost patience but having said that, you've got to give Souths a lot of credit for coming back," said Bellamy. "I think we were really fortunate to get out of it at the end." The Storm jumped to third on the ladder after the victory, with the Warriors going down to the Panthers, while the Rabbitohs dropped to 15th as they wait for some of their stars to return. While the Rabbitohs are struggling for results, Johnston moved only six behind the benchmark of 212 tries that Ken Irvine set in 1973. "I said to him at half-time, 'Have you got another try?' He said, 'I've got another couple in me'," Bennett said of Johnston, who scored his final three tries after the break. "He's pretty pleased with himself and we are too."
