Iran launches six missiles towards US bases in Qatar; explosions heard over Doha as tensions escalate

By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on June 23, 2025, 22:32 IST In a dramatic escalation of regional hostilities, Iran has reportedly launched six missiles targeting US military bases in Qatar, according to an Israeli official cited by Axios and reported by Reuters. Explosions were heard over the Qatari capital, Doha, on Monday evening, prompting Qatar to shut down its airspace and forcing both US and UK embassies to issue emergency shelter-in-place advisories to their citizens. The suspected targets include the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US military installation in the Middle East, which houses approximately 10,000 American troops. A Western diplomat told Reuters that a 'credible Iranian threat' against the base has existed since noon. The White House and the US Department of Defense are now closely monitoring the situation. Meanwhile, air defense systems have been activated at the US Ain al-Asad base in Iraq, amid fears of simultaneous strikes. Sky News reports also suggest Iran may have launched attacks targeting US bases in Iraq. The missile launch follows Iranian threats of retaliation after recent reported strikes on its nuclear facilities. This unfolding crisis marks one of the most serious military escalations in the Middle East in years, with global powers now watching closely. This is a developing story. Oil plunges over 4% as market shrugs off Iran's missile strike on U.S. base in Qatar

By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on June 23, 2025, 23:03 IST Oil prices tumbled more than 4% on Monday despite Iran launching six missiles at the U.S.-operated Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, as investors bet against long-term supply disruptions in the region. U.S. crude fell $3.18, or 4.31%, to $70.66 per barrel, while global benchmark Brent dropped $3.35, or 4.35%, to $73.66. Both contracts had spiked overnight after the U.S. struck Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend, with Brent briefly rising above $81 per barrel. Iran's missile attack, reportedly in retaliation for the U.S. strikes, targeted Al-Udeid — the largest American military base in the Middle East. While Iran's parliament signaled support for closing the Strait of Hormuz — a vital oil transit route — analysts noted that the final decision rests with the country's national security council. 'The market is pricing in a scenario where things de-escalate gradually,' said Jorge Leon, geopolitical head at Rystad Energy. However, he warned that a sudden shift could still pose serious risks, especially if Iran attempts to shut the Strait, through which nearly 20% of global crude passes. Despite the heightened tension, markets remained focused on signals of supply stability and increased production, brushing off immediate fears of disruption. This is a developing situation. Qatar suspends all air traffic amid Iranian missile attack threat to US bases

By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on June 23, 2025, 23:03 IST In response to escalating regional tensions, Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the temporary suspension of all air navigation in the country's airspace on June 23, 2025. The decision follows reports of Iran launching six missiles targeting US military bases in Qatar, including the Al Udeid Air Base. The suspension is described as a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring the safety of citizens, residents, and visitors amid heightened security threats. Explosions were reported over Doha on Monday evening, with US and UK embassies urging citizens to shelter in place. #Statement | Qatar's Relevant Authorities Announce Temporary Suspension of Air Traffic in Country's Airspace to Ensure Safety of Citizens, Residents, and Visitors#MOFAQatar — Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Qatar (@MofaQatar_EN) June 23, 2025 Qatar emphasized that the security and safety of everyone on its soil is a top priority and confirmed that air defense systems successfully intercepted the missiles. No casualties were reported due to prior evacuation protocols at the targeted base. The Ministry assured continued monitoring of the situation in coordination with regional and international partners and promised public updates through official channels. This latest move comes as Qatar strongly condemned the Iranian strike, calling it a 'flagrant violation' of its sovereignty and international law, vowing to respond in kind.
