
AI adoption surges in Asia Pacific manufacturing for quality, efficiency
Manufacturers in Asia Pacific are increasingly investing in artificial intelligence to address operational challenges and build resilience, according to Rockwell Automation's 10th annual State of Smart Manufacturing Report.
The research, which surveyed over 1,500 manufacturers globally, identified a significant shift in the region with companies moving from experimenting with digital technologies to actively executing scaled AI and automation initiatives. The study covered manufacturers across leading countries including China, Japan, India, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.
AI adoption rises
Across Asia Pacific (APAC), 94% of manufacturers have either invested or plan to invest in AI, machine learning (ML) and next-generation AI techniques such as generative and causal AI within the next five years. The majority are focusing these technologies on specific business challenges.
Quality control has emerged as the top use case, with 47% of surveyed manufacturers highlighting it as their primary AI application. Cybersecurity closely follows at 44%, and 43% of respondents cite process optimisation as a key area for AI integration. These findings reflect an emphasis on improving production quality and managing evolving threats.
Nearly half of the surveyed businesses in APAC plan to increase the use of AI, while efforts to boost automation are being ramped up by 43% in the region. Talent shortages and the need to enhance operational efficiency are driving these investments.
Addressing workforce and cybersecurity
AI and automation are seen as critical tools to mitigate skilled labour shortages, with 46% of APAC businesses believing AI/ML will help address these staffing challenges. Additionally, 42% report they are adding or using technologies to create more engaging jobs, suggesting an intent not just to replace tasks, but to make roles more appealing and sustainable.
The report also demonstrates the continued importance of cybersecurity. In APAC, 95% of manufacturers consider cybersecurity practices and standards to be moderately to extremely important. However, 28% regard a lack of leadership awareness or the underestimation of cybersecurity risks as a significant obstacle to robust defences. "We're seeing strong momentum across Asia Pacific in adopting AI and smart manufacturing technologies, not just as buzzwords but as mission-critical capabilities to drive quality, agility and growth. What stands out this year is the region's tech-first mindset, with nearly half of the manufacturers already scaling AI to address workforce gaps, cybersecurity risks, and evolving sustainability targets. The focus has clearly shifted from experimentation to execution," said Scott Wooldridge, Regional President, Asia Pacific, Rockwell Automation.
Globally, the research also notes that cybersecurity concerns have grown, with cybersecurity now ranking as the second biggest external risk. Proactive use of AI for cybersecurity is increasing, with 49% of manufacturers planning to use AI in this area next year, a rise from 40% a year ago.
Sustainability and efficiency
Sustainability is increasingly being seen as an efficiency driver. In APAC, 55% of respondents stated their pursuit of sustainability is primarily about improving operational efficiency, up from 39% the previous year. Smart manufacturing technologies are being used to make processes more sustainable and to accelerate responsiveness to changing regulations and market pressures.
Broader global context
The study found that 81% of manufacturers globally are accelerating digital transformation in response to internal and external pressures. Cloud computing, AI, cybersecurity, and quality management featured as the primary technology investment areas.
Manufacturers worldwide are increasingly moving beyond experimentation with advanced technologies. The report highlighted that organisations investing in generative and causal AI increased by 12% year-on-year, suggesting a maturing approach to deploying such tools at scale. Quality control remains the leading AI application globally, with 50% planning to implement AI/ML initiatives to support product quality in the next year. "Today's technology advancements are unlocking new opportunities where the combined potential of people and technology will shape our collective future," says Blake Moret, Chairman and CEO, Rockwell Automation. Nearly half of respondents now view the ability to apply AI as an extremely important skill, up from just 10% in the previous year. This reflects an alignment of talent development with technical innovation objectives throughout manufacturing organisations.
The State of Smart Manufacturing Report collected feedback from respondents ranging from management to C-suite roles, spanning industries such as consumer packaged goods, food and beverage, automotive, semiconductor, energy, and life sciences, and capturing perspectives from companies with revenues from $100 million to over $30 billion.

Rockwell Automation launches OptixEdge for real-time data gains
Rockwell Automation has released OptixEdge, an edge gateway solution designed to improve data processing efficiency for industrial customers. The company identified that, despite a surge in data produced by smart machines, only 44% is being utilised effectively, according to its own State of Smart Manufacturing Report. Many manufacturers and operators are said to face obstacles such as network limitations, security concerns, and the potential high costs associated with data storage, often leading to underutilisation of machine-generated data. Typically, industrial data processing requires sending information to remote cloud servers, a method that can be both expensive and inefficient. OptixEdge, however, processes information locally at the point of generation — the machine — and does so in real time. This localised processing is made possible through integration with Rockwell's FactoryTalk Optix software, which connects to the user's control system to collect, analyse, and relay data to the cloud. The company claims this approach allows for monitoring and analysis of machine or system data from multiple locations with increased speed and at reduced cost. "OptixEdge empowers customers to take control of their data like never before, providing powerful edge computing capabilities with flexibility, security, and ease of use," said Jessica Morell, Software Product Manager at Rockwell Automation. "By processing data at its source, OptixEdge enables customers to unlock valuable insights, improve efficiency, and drive innovation across their operations." The key features of OptixEdge have been developed to specifically target time-saving, cost reduction, and ease of use for industries handling significant volumes of operational data. One such feature is the built-in Wizard App, a pre-installed FactoryTalk Optix application. This tool streamlines data collection and configuration, allowing users to make necessary adjustments via a web browser, thus reducing the time required for engineering processes. Users also have the option to create and deploy custom applications if needed. The hardware is designed to support lightweight applications running alongside the included software, allowing for efficient operation without overburdening system resources. Remote access and system troubleshooting are supported through FactoryTalk Remote Access, enabling engineers and maintenance teams to securely program, configure, and resolve issues from a distance over a VPN connection. Flexibility is emphasised in the design, with OptixEdge able to be used either with Rockwell Automation's existing hardware or with third-party graphic terminals and controllers. This open approach aims to ensure compatibility with a wide array of industrial setups, removing the need for customers to overhaul current systems in order to integrate the new solution. Cost savings have also been highlighted as a benefit, stemming from the ability to send only essential data to the cloud. By reducing the volume of data transmitted and stored externally, companies can potentially decrease storage costs and improve the overall performance of their networks. OptixEdge represents Rockwell Automation's response to persistent industry challenges regarding data utility and efficiency. By facilitating real-time, on-site data processing while enabling secure cloud integration, the solution aims to improve the speed and accuracy of operational insights for industrial customers. Jessica Morell stated that customers can expect a product that aims to simplify data management and enhance operational decision-making across a range of environments. The introduction of OptixEdge forms part of the company's ongoing effort to address digital transformation obstacles faced by manufacturers and plant operators.

Adrian Giecco named South Pacific Regional Director at Rockwell
Adrian Giecco has been appointed as regional director, South Pacific, for Rockwell Automation, with his role becoming effective from July 2025. Giecco will succeed Anthony Wong, who has recently been promoted to vice president – enterprise software sales and consulting services – Asia Pacific. Based in Melbourne, Giecco will oversee operations throughout Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific region. His new position will see him leading Rockwell Automation's efforts to support manufacturers and producers across the region during a period of industry change. Leadership transition Giecco joined Rockwell Automation in 2012 as a solution architect in Victoria, Australia. Since then, he has advanced through various leadership roles, first as business manager for Controllers and I/O in Asia Pacific, and subsequently as business manager for Architecture and Software in the South Pacific. Since 2020, he has held the position of director of Software and Control for the Asia Pacific region, and has been based in Singapore during this period. He has experience in leading teams and managing complex automation projects across several countries. Commenting on his appointment, Giecco said: "I'm thrilled to be returning to the region at such a pivotal moment for manufacturers and producers. Rockwell is well positioned to unlock new value through our innovations, deep domain expertise, and strong partner ecosystem. I'm excited to lead this incredible team, strengthen existing relationships, and explore new partnerships as we help shape the future of industrial operations." He also stated: "With our premier event, ROKLive, being held July 29-31 on the Gold Coast, I'm ready to hit the ground running and make connections with valued partners, customers, end-users, and colleagues." Industry experience Giecco brings more than two decades of experience in industrial control and information technology to the role. Prior to joining Rockwell Automation, Giecco co-founded an agricultural technology start-up focused on supporting sustainable agriculture. Regional outlook Rockwell Automation will look to Giecco's leadership as the firm continues to pursue strategic objectives across Australia, New Zealand, and neighbouring South Pacific markets. His appointment is intended to support the company's partnerships and help guide clients through a time of digital change within the industrial sector.
