Keira Knightley says Pirates of the Caribbean gave her 'terrible actress' label

Metro13-06-2025

Keira Knightley says the public's reaction to her role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise resulted in her being tagged as a 'terrible' actress.
The Richmond-born actress, 40, starred as Elizabeth Swann in the three original Pirates films, which were released between 2003 and 2007.
Starring alongside Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner, Keira shot to global fame in the role of Elizabeth aged just 18.
The first film, The Curse of the Black Pearl, grossed roughly £480million at the global box office upon release – equivalent to around £870m in 2025.
After two sequels – Dead Man's Chest and At World's End – the original trilogy had grossed almost £2billion when Keira first left the series in 2007.
But despite the major global success with movie fans, the Pirates franchise always found it hard to win critics over – and Keira says that problem stuck with her.
She told Vanity Fair: 'I think in the public consciousness, I was seen as a terrible actress [after Pirates of the Caribbean was released in cinemas].'
Keira spoke to the publication recently to mark the 20th anniversary of Pride & Prejudice, which she now regards as her first project that was acclaimed by audiences and critics alike.
'I had this phenomenally big success with Pirates. [But] I think Pride & Prejudice was the first one that was a phenomenally big success but was also critically acclaimed.
'[Pride & Prejudice was released] around the same time as Pirates 2. I got the worst reviews ever for that. But then [I was] nominated for an Oscar at the same time – it was, in my 21-year-old head, quite confusing.'
Keira starred as Lizzy Bennett in the 2005 adaptation of the Jane Austen 1813 novel, opposite Succession actor Matthew Macfadyen in the role of Mr. Darcy.
The acclaimed film also featured work from esteemed names such as Donald Sutherland, Carey Mulligan, Tom Hollander, Rosamund Pike, Judi Dench.
While the first three Pirates films were slapped with a mixed Rotten Tomatoes rating of 58% (on average), Pride & Prejudice was much more warmly received at 87%.
The films were loved by fans but were especially loathed by then-BBC film critic Mark Kermode – his co-host Simon Mayo famously started reading a newspaper instead of listening to one of Mark's signature rants about At World's End.
Speaking about Keira's performance during his review, Mark said: 'When Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are on screen together, it's like two chairs mating.'
Dubbing her 'Ikea Knightley', Mark apparently drew the ire of one Benedict Cumberbatch, who, according to Keira, defended her to the film critic's face and even gave him a punch on the arm.
She told Elle Magazine in 2014: 'When I saw Benedict, I said, 'Did you punch a journalist?' And he said he did. Everybody needs a friend like that.' More Trending
Around the time of the release of the first Pirates film, Keira was also working with Richard Curtis on the 2003 Christmas romance film Love, Actually.
Years later, Richard revealed that Keira had several worries about starring in the seafaring series, confessing that she thought it would sink rather than swim.
'I remember sitting down with Keira while we were shooting,' he told ABC News, before asking Knightley what her next project was.
Richard continued: 'She said, 'I don't think it's going to work. It's a pirate film, and they always fail'.'

The Chase star Mark Labbett says 'it's an honour' 16 years after ITV show debut

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info The Chase's Mark Labbett was quick to issue a message to one of the celebrity guests during Saturday's show. During the episode, which originally aired last year, ITV viewers saw 'The Beast' go head to head with the likes of Raj Bisram, Danielle Harold, John Conteh and Roger Black, who were all competing to win money for their charity. With the Antiques Roadshow expert and EastEnders star successfully managing to make it back to the table with the money they had earned in their round, it was time for former British professional boxer John Conteh to face Mark. The 74-year-old answered three questions correctly, meaning he had earned a total of £3,000 to potentially bring back to the team. However, before facing Mark at the table, the quizzer had some kind words to say to the boxing champ. He said: 'Good evening, John. It's not often I say this, but it's an honour, sir, to meet you.' The audience gave a collective sound of admiration for Mark's remark as John thanked him. Bradley added: 'He loves his boxing!' Although the niceties were short-lived as Mark replied: 'Right, that's the last compliment you'll get.' Sadly, John didn't make it back to the table as Mark caught him at the table during his round. In the end, it was Raj, Danielle and Roger in the final Chase as they were playing to win a staggering £120,000 after Roger decided to go for Mark's high offer. Getting a three-step headstart, the team managed to answer 11 questions correctly, setting a target of 14 for the chaser to try and beat. With two minutes on the clock, Mark managed to catch the team with 47 seconds left on the clock to spare. Speaking about their performance, the quizzer, who has been part of the ITV show for 16 years, said: 'I'm sorry guys, the way they broke, either I knew them, or they were so tough you didn't stand a prayer at pushing me back.' Meanwhile, host Bradley Walsh said: 'We missed John Conteh, of course, you needed a full house, and we needed a bigger score on our side of that run, but that's just the way it is.' However, the ITV star informed the team that they won't be walking away empty handed as they'd each get £1,000 to give to their chosen charity. The Chase is available to watch on ITVX

JoJo Siwa abruptly cancels gay pride gig over 'pressure' to brand her sexuality

JoJo Siwa will no longer be taking part in a Pride event in Chicago next weekend - with the news being announced a day after she candidly opened up about her sexuality journey JoJo Siwa has abruptly pulled out of a gay pride performance just hours after revealing she felt "pressured" to brand herself a lesbian. The 22-year-old American singer has been on a high profile romantic journey since April this year when she met Love Island star Chris Hughes in the UK Celebrity Big Brother house. Viewers watched on in surprise as the pair grew closer and closer over the course of their time in the house. Eyebrows were raised as JoJo was dating an Australian content creator called Kath Ebbs at the time. ‌ Once the show ended, Kath was almost immediately dumped by the Dance Moms star and days later it was revealed she and 32-year-old Chris had embarked on a romance. This week, JoJo, who identifies as queer, explained that she had been pressured to declare herself a lesbian. ‌ And in the wake of this declaration, it has been revealed she has dropped out at performing at an LGBTQ+ event later this month. She had been due to perform at the Back Lot Bash in Chicago as part of their Chicago Pride Sunday party on June 29. But the organization suddenly announced on Saturday morning that this would no longer be the case. The venue wrote on social media: "Due to a scheduling conflict, JoJo Siwa will no longer be performing at Chicago's Back Lot Bash" - without and further explanation. The Mirror has contacted a representative of JoJo for comment. The abrupt cancellation follows news that the star had cancelled a planned tour. She revealed via her official website earlier this month: "I've got some news that breaks my heart to share... my US tour has to be postponed. I promise I'll be back before you know it to perform for all the beautiful people in the US!... Announcements will be coming soon, including some Europe shows!:)" It added: "Thank you so much for your understanding and support. I can't wait to see you all soon! To my Dream Guest VIPs, my team will be reaching out to you individually to plan something special. Refunds will be issued at point of purchase." ‌ Her Chicago Pride cancellation comes a day after she gave a candid interview to the Daily Mail in which she opened up about her sexuality journey. She told the publication: "When I came out at 17, I said: 'I'm pansexual, because I don't care [about gender].' But then I kind of boxed myself in and I said: 'I'm a lesbian.' And I think I did that because of pressure." She continued: "'In a weird way, I think [the pressure] came a little bit from inside the [LGBTQ] community at times. From people I know, from partners I've had. ‌ "You just get put in this world where you feel like, because you now have said, 'Oh, I'm a lesbian', you have to be a lesbian. And the truth is, sexuality is fluid." In a recent chat with TMZ, JoJo also addressed the ongoing scrutiny that she's been subjected to as fans have dissected her love life. She told the outlet: "The thing is, love is a beautiful rainbow and I think that the LGBTQIA+ community needs to remember that love is love and think the hate from within the community is something I've learned a lot from and I think that a lot of people get to grow from and I'm on of those people. ‌ "I think that again I can give you an example of love is love, you can be happy..." Fans could soon see a lot more of JoJo and Chris and their apparent blossoming love - as rumours abound that ITV is preparing to offer them a reality show of their own. A source told The Sun: "It's still in the early stages but ITV really think they'd be amazing TV with their own show. Fans around the world are obsessed with their relationship and there are so many TikTok accounts devoted to their love story."
