SHAH ALAM: Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has expressed sadness and disappointment over the rise in fraudulent haj travel packages affecting Muslims in the country.
His Royal Highness said it was especially disheartening that those exploiting the situation were Muslims themselves, who were willing to deceive their fellow believers for personal gain.
Sultan Sharafuddin decreed that stern action be taken against any individual or travel agency offering haj packages that take advantage of and deceive Muslims.
The Ruler said this in a post on the Selangor Royal Office's Facebook page, in which His Royal Highness and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, extended Hari Raya Aidiladha greetings to Muslims across Malaysia.
His Royal Highness also called on Muslims to uphold the sanctity of the haj by ensuring that all arrangements are made through licensed and recognised agents and companies authorised by the authorities to manage haj and umrah affairs, Bernama repor­ted.
At the same time, Their Royal Highnesses prayed that Malaysian pilgrims would be granted a mabrur haj and return home safely.
According to the statement, the Sultan and the Tengku Permai­suri also hoped that this Aidiladha would inspire all Muslims to be grateful for Allah's blessings and to perform the sacrificial rites to help the poor, as well as reflect on the plight of the less fortunate.
Sultan Sharafuddin and Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin performed the solat sunat Aidiladha with more than 10,000 congregants at Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah in Shah Alam yesterday.
Also present was Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

The handover-of-duties ceremony took place at the Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre (Pulapol), witnessed by the Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and attended by the Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil as well as senior officers of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). Mohd Khalid, 60, has held various important positions in the PDRM Special Branch, including Chief of the Pahang Special Branch from May 25, 2018, before being appointed as the Bukit Aman Special Branch chief assistant director on Sept 6, 2021. Saifuddin Nasution in a statement today said Mohd Khalid's appointment received the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia in accordance with Clauses (4) and (5) Article 140 of the Federal Constitution, upon the advice of the Prime Minister and the recommendation of the Police Force Commission. According to him, the contract appointment is for two years, starting from June 23 this year until June 22, 2027. He said Mohd Khalid was a highly experienced officer in the field of intelligence and security since he began serving in the force on April 5, 1987, when he was assigned to the Special Branch at the Bukit Aman police headquarters, after completing the General Police Training in the same year. 'Mohd Khalid also has experience serving at the Bukit Aman police headquarters, contingents and overseas, and has held key positions such as Deputy Director of Special Branch I, Bukit Aman police headquarters, and Security Liaison Officer (SLO) London, United Kingdom. 'He was promoted to the position of Special Branch director on April 10, 2023, before mandatory retirement on April 8, 2025, and his service as Special Branch director continued after retirement and he was appointed on a contract basis starting from April 8, 2025, until now,' he said. Saifuddin Nasution said that based on his extensive experience in the field of policing, Mohd Khalid possesses high competence and leadership qualities to carry on the continuity and responsibility of leading the team. Mohd Khalid, who was born in Manong, Perak on April 8, 1965, holds a Master's Degree in Comparative Laws and a Bachelor's Degree in Law (Honours) from the International Islamic University Malaysia, as well as a Diploma in Public Administration from Universiti Teknologi Mara. MACC: Whistleblowers must not publicise information to be disclosed if seeking protection

KUALA LUMPUR: Only those who fulfil set conditions when reporting information about misconduct will be granted protection as informants or whistleblowers, says the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). Its senior director (legal and prosecution division) Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin said this is an important aspect the public needs to understand. He said that although the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010 protects informants against improper retaliation, such protection is only applicable if reports are made through legal procedures to enforcement agencies such as the MACC, the police or relevant government agencies. "There's a misconception that anyone with information about misconduct can automatically seek protection as a whistleblower. In reality, it's not that simple. "A common misunderstanding is the belief that informants can publicly disclose information, for example, to the media or on social media, before officially applying for protection. This is incorrect," he told Bernama. He said that in order to qualify for whistleblower protection, a report must also be made in good faith and not be driven by personal motives such as revenge or defamation. Additionally, the whistleblower must not be involved in the offence being reported, he added. Citing Section 11(1) of the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010, he said, protection can be revoked if the whistleblower is found to have participated in the misconduct they exposed. "This provision is crucial to maintaining the integrity of whistleblowers and to prevent the misuse of protected status as a shield against offences they have committed," he said. Wan Shaharuddin said that while the law provides legal protection, whistleblowers still face various challenges, including being labelled ass 'complainants' or 'traitors', fears of retaliation and discrimination, and a general lack of public understanding about the legal process for applying for protection. He said in an effort to encourage more individuals, especially civil servants, to report corruption cases, the government had introduced cash incentives and official recognition for those who report corruption to the MACC since 2011. He said as of 2024, 514 civil servants had received rewards totalling over RM1mil, with the highest individual reward amounting to RM100,000. In addition, Wan Shaharuddin said that to further enhance whistleblower protection, the government tabled the Whistleblower Protection (Amendment) Bill 2025 in the Dewan Rakyat on March 6. "The amendment aims to strengthen protection for whistleblowers who report misconduct, particularly in cases of corruption within both the public and private sectors. It is expected to provide more comprehensive protection to whistleblowers, including protection from harmful actions and immunity from civil or criminal action. "This amendment is hoped to encourage more individuals to come forward to report misconduct without fear," he said. – Bernama

PM Anwar offers condolences to Hamzah over tragic loss

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended his condolences to Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin following the passing of his mother-in-law, Datin Salmiah Nyak Matt, 84, who died in a house fire last night. In a Facebook post, Anwar also offered prayers and support to Hamzah and his family. 'I hope that Hamzah will remain strong in facing this terrible ordeal, and I pray for the best for him and his family. May Allah forgive the sins of his mother-in-law, Salmiah, and grant her a special place in Jannah, Insya-Allah,' he said. Salmiah died in a fire that broke out at a two-storey house in Jalan Raja Abdullah, Kampung Sungai Rapat Tambahan, Ipoh, Perak, at around 9 pm yesterday. Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Sayani Saidon said Salmiah's husband, Datuk Abdul Ghani Ngah, 83, who was found in a room upstairs, suffered shortness of breath and was sent to Raja Perempuan Bainun Hospital (HRPB) for treatment. Four other family members in the house, comprising three men and one woman aged between 18 and 49, escaped unhurt.
