OpenAI rolls out free, lightweight Deep Research tool for all ChatGPT users
OpenAI has introduced a lightweight version of its Deep Research tool. It is now available to all ChatGPT users — including Plus, Team, Pro, and even free users. OpenAI says that the lighter version is based on the company's o4-mini model and is being released for free to increase current rate limits.OpenAI's new lightweight research tool is not as advanced as the original Deep Research version. However, the company says that it is nearly as intelligent and capable enough to perform live online research and gather data across the internet. It also puts less load on OpenAI's LLMs and is significantly cheaper to run.advertisementOpenAI says the responses from the lighter version of the Deep Research tool will generally be shorter but will still offer meaningful insights. 'Responses will typically be shorter while maintaining the depth and quality you've come to expect,' the company noted in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
What is OpenAI's Deep Research?
OpenAI introduced its new Deep Research tool earlier this year. It is built on a version of OpenAI's upcoming o3 model, which has been tuned specifically for web browsing and data interpretation. Unlike GPT-4o, which is better suited for quick interactions and real-time conversations, OpenAI says that Deep Research is intended for detailed tasks that require extended processing, reference gathering, and fact-checking.advertisementIn simple terms, Deep Research is an AI-powered agent designed to help users gather information across the web. Once a user submits a query in the Deep Research option available in ChatGPT — such as a product comparison or market overview — the AI tool searches online sources, analyses the content, and offers users a structured report. However, with all the searching and compilation, the Deep Research tool can take between 5 and 30 minutes, depending on the complexity of the query. The tool also offers users a summary of the steps it took and cites the sources used in the final report. Users can continue other work while the process runs in the background. Now, the lighter version is also capable of conducting research and accessing the web, albeit with limitations and less load on the system. How to use Deep Research ChatGPT tool?To use the Deep Research tool, choose 'Deep Research' from the message composer in ChatGPT and type your query. You can also upload relevant files such as spreadsheets or PDFs to give the AI additional context around your query.OpenAI has said that it plans to add more features like visual elements such as charts and data visualisations to future updates of Deep Research to make the reports easier to interpret.Usage limit increasedadvertisementMeanwhile, with the introduction of lightweight Deep Research, OpenAI has also included usage limits for the tool:– ChatGPT Free users now get five Deep Research queries per month– ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Education users will get 25 queries per month– ChatGPT Pro users can run up to 250 queriesOnce a user hits their limit for the full version, the system will automatically switch to the lightweight version without interruption. Meanwhile, Enterprise and Education accounts are expected to receive access to the lightweight version next week, with the same limits as Team accounts.
